Turnbull has decent numbers but it's not ideal that he's going to end this season as our best starter and it's going to delay him from going to the role where he's likely to be at his best out of the pen.
We are going to suck next year, and have no better alternatives to replace him. Just keep him in rotation.
Goddammit nobody loved Ryan Raburn more than me. He was legit good for 700 plates appearances between '09 and '10.
The internet debates about Raburn on offense and defense got pretty heated back in the day. The metrics said he was a good fielder, but he was also good for 2-3 of the worst plays you can imagine every year in the OF.
I have no clue on any of these guys except McClendon, who I just can't believe is a candidate. I would throw in Rabelo as a name there, as well, just based on his history with the organization. In terms of the premise of "hire someone from an actually good org and maybe they could bring some of that here" vibes, I'm somewhat intrigued by George Lombard (LAD) and Mark Kotsay (OAK).
Morosi also brought up Marcus Thames, who I'm intrigued by. I'm sure it's not all him, but he's the Yankees' hitting coach and everyone on that team turns into awesome hitters. I say we hire him and then also bring back Rod Allen in the booth. Allen loved him some Thames back in the day.
Thames has been a hitting coach for the Yankees' org since 14. Spent three years in the minors in that job, was assistant hitting coach for NYY in 17, and has been the main hitting coach the last three years. I'm not sure what the history is for hitting coaches becoming managers. I'm sure there would be some issues there in terms of dealing with pitchers and he'd need really strong pitching coach and bench coaches to help him with that. But he's my favorite name I've read so far based on resume.
Thames was one of my favorite 2006 Tigers, because in '06 he was on some crazy run where he homered in every game I went to. It was like 7 or 8 games I went that year and he homered in every one
Ken Rosenthal wrote today that we're expected to hire an experienced manager, and the two most likely names are Hinch and Fredi Gonzalez. I wouldn't mind Hinch, but I hope he's wrong about the experience thing. He also wrote about GMs on the hot seat and Avila's name wasn't mentioned, in case people were still holding on to that dream.
All the national writers seem to be referring to it as a "desirable" job. So I guess our perception of Avila is much worse locally and he won't be going anywhere for a long time.
Fuck. Must be nice to suck ass at your job every year. Pick in top 3 of draft, and sell false hope via prospect rankings. If Avila gets fired today, what team is hiring him as GM? The answer is not one. He’s a good #2 GM, but has not proven he’s capable of being the man in charge
We're 1.5 games out of the 5th pick and we've been one of the 2-3 worst teams in the league for the last three weeks. I'm not sweating it.
Watching tonight's game with my newborn son, he gets to be taught the losing ways of Detroit pro teams early
Forgot Skubal pitching tonight. I will definitely tune in. Hopefully he can match his performance from last week.
Walked 18.... New league record. Struck out 18.... Another a new league record. In addition, he hit the sportswriters, the public-address announcer, the bull mascot — twice — also new league records. But, Al. This guy’s got some serious s—.”
Its a weird season too. A lot of big prospects going through trouble. Hell even Luis Robert is 0 for his last 28 with 15 k. Down to .220 avg
If we lose all 4 to KC, we will probably end up with #3 pick. Most likely scenario we win 2 of 4, and end up at 5 or 6.
Still a good chance at least 1 of the 2 games against St Louis gets played too. 6 teams are still battling for 4 playoff spots.
Also 140 hits (minus whatever he gets these last few games and 15 HR (minus anymore) seems doable next year for Miggy if healthy. Think best case scenario is he gets 3000 hits and 500 HR next year and then retires
He ain’t walking away from $65 million bucks bro. He will be trotting his ass out there until Sept. 2023.
Although more i think about it, that 140 hits probably ain't happening either. Wouldnt get that many in a 162 game pace with his average this season
