Need help defensively no matter who is in goal. Would rather spend on Krug than a goalie. I know I'm crazy for saying it but I'd consider Askarov #4. Laugh at me now, but I'm convinced he is going to be a stud
How do these loans work? Do they just pay the Wings some nominal amount and the Wings think it's worth it because at least the player is gaining experience?
Late on this but Markstrom makes some sense to me I think. $5-6 million per year for a team’s starting goalie is about league average I would think The Wings were the worst team in the league by 23 points. Adding him doesn’t all of sudden take them out of being an absolute bottom dweller. This shouldn’t impact draft lottery odds. It hopefully helps keep them more competitive game by game without being much better in the standings Bernier is in the last year of his deal so there is only way year of overlap paying goalies too much (this is the year to do that). It allows them to move Bernier at the deadline and not be nervous about trotting out trash if that happens. It also fills the need to sign a starting goalie in 2021-22 I wouldn’t look at him as being the goalie they field when they plan to challenge for playoff spots. I trust Yzerman not to tie up too much future salary that it would impact future RFA/UFA
Does Markstrom really make Wings more competitive? To be honest Bernier had stretches last year where he looked pretty good. Bernier wasn't the problem most nights. I'm not against bringing in another goalie, but without improvements in other areas I dont think it makes too much a difference
Realistically we are going to improve by a handful of wins just because we were so historically awful and it’s impossible to replicate. Adding Markstrom would add several wins to our bounce back, but we are still a bottom five team.
He certainly makes them more competitive I think Bernier only played in 46 games. I agree Bernier is not the problem. He’s also 32 and on the last year of his contract It’s not healthy to be the worst team in the league by 23 points for another year or two
I want to preface this by saying I don’t believe in having goons just because. But, if Vegas needs to move salary to go after Pietreangelo, I would be all over Reaves. We are going to be so young that having that presence on the lineup 60 games a year is probably worth it.
Are we still looking at Perfetti? I'm still disappointed in myself that I fell in love with Stutzle pre lottery. I knew we were going to get fucked so I didnt put any hopes in getting the 1 but Stutzle I thought was realistic :/.
I think Sanderson is more valued. He’s so advanced defensively for his age, and I could see the team thinking he has offense yet to be developed. Plus, he is a LHD, which we lack in the system.
After all this time, I feel pretty good with my thoughts as it relates to candidates for #4. I assume the top three is chalk, so I won’t bother addressing those players. I’m also doing this in my own personal order. Perfetti After months of overanalyzing these guys, I feel good with Perfetti at the top of my list. This is mainly because I do think he’s a center at the next level. His offensive game is so advanced for his age that I just don’t worry about his pace or is skating. He will dictate possession at the next level. If you asked me who outside of Laf could ever lead the league in points from this class, it’s Perfetti. Rossi I loved him and then I hated him, but I love him again. More and more I have this feeling he might be the guy, based on how much he sounds like Yzerman from an intangible perspective. He would be our 2C immediately, but I anticipate him being better than Larkin. The question is his ceiling. Guys his height don’t usually stick at C, but he’s built like a truck. I said before that I see a lot of Zetterberg in him, but I think he could be as good as Datsyuk was defensively. It’s hard to not be enticed by the idea of 70 point guy always in contention for the Selke. Raymond He is going to be an elite assist man in this league. The fact he is purely a winger drops him a bit, though it isn’t like we need wingers as well. Ultimately, I’m deferring to Centers because of need, though I think he’s right there in the conversation with Perfetti and Rossi. Sanderson Elite gap control. Very good transitionally. Very good skater. Can he provide you 30-40 points consistently? I just don’t know, but he would mesh well with Hronek and Seider. I don’t think he’s the fourth best player in the draft though. Drysdale Great skater. Awesome transitionally. He is a prototypical puck moving D but I’m not sure he’s a for sure PP1 guy. You are taking Drysdale at 4 because you think he’s going to be a 40-50 point by guy. Not sure I see it in him but the talent is there. We have so many RHD in the system, it has to give you pause, but it isn’t a dealbreaker. Askarov Better than Spencer Knight. Probably can be in a time share when his KHL deal is up in two years. Will likely be a great #1 goalie. I just don’t think that position merits this kind of investment.
Totally justified. He’s really the Rossi of defensemen in this class, in that his upside is fantastic but he’s probably less likely to get there than other players. That said, his floor could be Ryan McDonagh. Which, while not top 5 pick worthy, is still hugely important. I prefer going after upside though.
Also in regards to Rossi, Rasmussen was loaned out to the team Rossi is currently training with, so it’s another data point for the Wings.
thank god the draft is in October so I can start figuring out who I want the Lions to pick in the top 5.
I’m totally going to get my hopes up that the teams ahead of us fall in love with other players and Byfield falls to us
Stutzle. Oversized guys beating up on kids isn’t as impressive as a kid dominating adults in a defensive league. What Stutzle did in Germany is just as impressive as what Matthews did in Switzerland, except Stutzle was a year younger.
I got nothing against Gagner and see a role he can play, but I really hope it means they will buy out or waive dead weight at forward instead of not using some younger guys
We need depth and plus, Gagner is a good PP2 guy. On that contract, he could be highly valuable at the TDL.
With 6 picks in the first three rounds it’d be nice for once to try to move up some of them for another first. This team doesn’t need depth, it needs top end talent. Better odds finding it at #20 than say #32 & #45
I don’t think so. For example, he’s not better than any of the 1C’s that played in the conference finals.
I think to truly contend you really need two 1C and ideally Larkin fills that 1C B spot and then we have a legit superstar 1C A but that's a perfect world.
Honestly I think Larkin is a guy who has another level if he gets more talent around him. Not saying elite level, but think he has above average 1C in him. Unfortunately I think the losing has taken a toll on him and is effecting his attitude and his development/play. I think they need to start getting a little more competitive so guys like Larkin can start getting a little better and aren't spending a good chunk of the game playing from behind in their own zone
Mantha not being a dumbass and focusing on being actually on the ice I imagine would help Larkin quite a bit.
Getting some business taken care of today. This is merely an AHL deal, but it makes me hopeful a Mantha deal will be done soon.
God I fucking hate looking at our cap table, tilts me every time I see Nielsen and Abdelkaders money and term.
There have a lot of awful contracts in this town lately, but for some reason the Abby one pisses me off the most by far. Its not even overpaying for a superstar past his prime or overpaying an average guy. Its paying a guy who may have been the worst forward in the league last year second line money
Realistically, Abby will be in GR most of the remainder of his deal. We will only get like a mil of cap relief each year he’s down there, but whatever. I don’t mind having him as a leader in GR.
