I do wonder if a Nielsen buyout is possible, if for no other reason than to clear up roster space. You don’t save a ton of cap room, but the bit of the two additional years a buyout would tack on is less than a million per year.

I think it says a lot that Staal was willing to waive his NMC to come here. The logo and Stevie have cache. Doesn’t hurt he will get to play a lot to try and earn another decent deal though.

    Put Staal with Seider.

Hell id take a good contract if we could convince someone to come. Team still needs drqft capital but also has some pieces who it could be detrimental to to keep being this bad

So if Staal is sticking around, it’s all but assured Cholowski is starting in GR. Still, it wouldn’t shock me if he’s added as a sweetener to a trade either.

It’s crazy but I still can’t piece together an opening night roster, though the D seems set.

    DDK - Hronek
    Staal - Seider
    Nemeth - Lindstrom
    Biega

Not saying he will be elite, especially when the odds are against him even being an NHL regular. That said, his ceiling is gigantic.

Would be awesome to pick up another pick or two between this years and next years draft to take more swings on potential elite talent with high ceilings.

I don’t think Ottawa would do it, especially for a team in the division.

And when they already have the 5th pick, too. Only reason to move down would be if they think one of the consensus guys isn't a top 3 player.

Only chance at getting one of the consensus top 3 is maybe the kings go off board and grab a defenseman.

Sens ain’t moving 3 for 4. We need a top flight C. NYR and Ottawa... there is some talk on a deal there.
Pierre said he won’t over think the 3rd pick and will take whoever LA doesn’t. As for 5 I’ve heard a few things but nothing concrete. My guess is if they still have the pick it will be a D...or flip picks between Anaheim or Jersey.

Between cap friendly and a few podcasts, it appears the consensus is a Detroit still has 33 mil in cap space. That is predicated on Detroit spending to the cap to utilize Zetterberg’s 6 mil on LTIR. Plus, we have to actually be allowed to spend the cap by ownership, but it seems like that’s the plan.

Mantha and Bertuzzi need new deals, and there are several other RFA to possibly bring back, but those deals will be like a mil each. So if we spend to the cap, Detroit probably has 15 mil to spend. That could be in FA, on bad deals or for hockey trades.

Give me asset deals with short term, bad money or go get Krug.

What is the consensus on what the rights for him will cost?

To be honest, I'm basing my Krug takes on others opinions that he's great and haven't watched him that much. Think his game will age well and fits our timeline?

I do think we need to start winning some games soon even if tanking is still beneficial to the overall picture, kids need to learn what winning feels like.

He is very good - great. I just don’t how his game will age. Could turn into a Shattnkirk situation, though I think Krug is a much better player.

Think if this was 2022 it would be a hard yes, assuming stuff progresses like we hope, but kinda feels a couple years early to full send it. That being said I wouldn't hate it if it happened.

It comes down to the contract for me. Ideally, we can do 5x7. I don’t see Krug doing that. Anything over five years would be rough.

I hope we don’t overpay Bert. He’s a complimentary piece in the top six or a great 3rd liner on a top team (kinda like Tyler Johnson in Tampa). His effectiveness is due to his effort a la Abby, Helm, and Glendening in their early years. If that regresses as he gets comfortable then that’s worrisome.

Bert is way more effective than Abby was. He already has more 20 goal seasons than Abby does in his whole career. Abby banked off one season playing with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Glendening and Helm never showed the offense he has either.

Think Tyler Johnson is pretty fair comparison. I really like Bert, I dont think I'm going to hate his contract unless they go crazy, which I don't expect

Mantha should be anywhere from 6-7 depending on term. 7x7 or maybe 5x6.

Bert would be best at 4x4 but I bet he gets something like 6x4.75

I probably should have qualified my post with numbers. My view is very similar. I was thinking 4-6 years between 4-5 mil per year. Id be ok with slightly over 5 on a shorter contract, as we have cap space and it would give a couple years to see how his development goes.

It helps when you get to play with the best American born player of all time.

Larkin is good enough at 1C if he has an elite scoring winger I think

This seems like a risk for both sides but it should keep the AAV down

    • Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has been taking care of business and made it clear that Detroit is willing to add salary to acquire more young assets for the rebuild. One thing that will help clarify how much he can spend on that front is a new contract for restricted free agent Anthony Mantha. Talks have progressed on that front and are moving in the right direction. It wouldn’t be surprising if that contract is shorter than originally thought. If he were to do a, let’s say, three-year extension, that would allow him to hit free agency before he’s 30 and in a time where there should be more clarity on the financial landscape of the league.

That's kind of interesting because I haven't seen Askarov's name linked to us legitimately at all, and he doesn't mention Rossi, who seemed to be picking up steam as far as the rumors go.

I agree with him that Perfetti is so linked to us it doesn’t seem real.

The Askarov thing makes sense though in that we have no goalies, Yzerman isn’t afraid of drafting Russians and he isn’t afraid of drafting goalies in the first round.
