3 year old son is getting his tonsils out friday. we are a little nervous but feel like that's about as routine as it gets for the ENT surgeon.
We started sleep training around 4 months, took a couple weeks but she's 3 years old now and still sleep about 8pm-7am. I know I've read in here a few times but any advice for transitioning from pooping in a diaper to on the potty. She's been good now for a while for peeing but she just refuses to poop on it. She did once accidentally and I think it just freaked her out too much. She promised us when she turned 3 and was a big kid she would do that, well she lied.
My first is 2 months old. He started sleeping like 4-5 hours at a time from 2 weeks. We started started sleep training at a month and he's slept 10+ hours by 6 weeks. He's down around 8:30-9 and sleeps til 730-8. My wife has him on a strict nap schedule so that helped a ton
Forgot this part. When my wife was on maternity leave she got her on a very strict nap schedule. That was I think the biggest help in getting the night sleeping down.
Our 3 month old is having issues with his oxygen levels and apnea. He has a floppy airway and congenital emphysema. On Thursday they are going to do a surgery where they remove part of his airway to tighten it to help him breath without obstruction. Later this month they are going to remove the upper lobe of one lung chamber.
Our newborn has the same issue but with central apnea as well. Had tissue removed which helped but did not have the other procedure yours is. Good luck.
Also my 7 year old made us breakfast for dinner tonight all by herself. Only thing I did was provide a little muscle for stirring. Otherwise 100% her. Pancakes and bacon. She killed it! Super proud of her.
We are fortunate to live about 10 minutes from MN Childrens hospital which is a very strong Children’s hospital. Because of what they were seeing on ultrasounds we got moved in to their high risk pregnancy (perinatal) group in February. The level of care and interaction between specialists has been great.
Is it laryngomalacia? We have that and possibly bronchial malacia. Our son has trisomy 21 so the laryngomalacia is a frequent complication. The airway issues are causing severe obstructive apnea He had a sleep study and the results were concerning enough they are doing surgery within a week of the test. The lung issue is like a 1/2500-4000 situation unrelated to any other underlying medical issue. They spotted it at 19 weeks by ultrasound and watched it closely to see if they needed to intervene in utero because it can be fatal. It’s all been a lot but our care has been nothing short of phenomenal.
6 year old has terrible teeth. She had to get an extraction done yesterday in a baby tooth and two crowns. She’s been going on and on about getting a Pokémon backpack toy that’s out right now. Well we put the “tooth” under her pillow Monday night. When she fell asleep we took it and put the Pokémon backpack on the pillow. At about 4am, she comes screaming in our room and hits me with the damn thing in my head while I’m sleeping. She’s screaming “the tooth fairy got me the Pokémon backpack, wwwooohooo”. Situation sucked but loved to see her joy.
Yes he has/had both. He had a supraglottoplasty procedure after his first sleep study came back. He was 5 weeks premature and was in the hospital for 10.5 weeks. He has had 3 sleep studies both here locally and in Cincinnati. He had lung issues at birth but grew out of those. Our main issue now is the central apnea which no one has an answer for other than to hope he grows out of it. He had several genetic tests done as did myself and mom. They all came back "normal" so we really have no idea what to do other than keep him on oxygen while he sleeps and hope he grows out of it. I will say this, I can not recommend Cincinnati Children's Hospital enough. Our pulmonologist here wanted to trach him, put a feeding tube in his side and send him home without getting a follow up sleep study after his supraglottoplasty. I am not familiar with your local hospital but if you feel like trying somewhere else for a second opinion Cincinnati is amazing. We will likely go back for our son's future sleep studies/procedures.
My wife has been more involved in his care but from what I know, Children’s of Cincinnati and Children’s of Philadelphia are probably the top 2 in the country for what we are dealing with. Minnesota and Austin are just behind in the volume of treatments. If we didn’t have such a good care locally we would be looking at those but we also have 2 other kids under 6 at home so this is much easier.
The Scariest moment of my life occurred this morning. My wife was getting my 1.5 year old daughter dressed around 6 AM and she had what appeared to be a seizure. She fell forward and went limp at first and wasn’t breathing then she woke up and got really stiff and started twitching while vomiting and pooping all at once. It was absolutely terrifying holding her while my wife called 911. At the time my mind went to her having a stroke. My wife thought she was dying. After an ambulance ride and brain/heart scan everything turned out fine. The doctors weren’t sure what caused the seizure but we are meeting with a neurologist next Monday. I don’t know enough about seizures to guess what is the problem. But fortunately she didn’t have anything obvious like a brain tumor. on top of that I still took my 3 year old to get his tonsils out shortly after my wife and daughter left in an ambulance. Everything went smooth there and they are both home doing fine. But Jesus Christ what a stressful morning. My heart is out to any parents who have had to watch their children have a seizure. please send any positive vibes our way. My babies need it!
I had seizures from the age of 2 to 17 when I had brain surgery. That actually sounds a lot like my first one. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to message me. Hoping for the best for your daughter.
Damn snakes. Sorry to hear. Did she have a fever? My almost 3 year old had several febrile seizures at that age.
Our 3 year old has had 2 seizures. It’s a scary and helpless feeling. We had no clue what the first one was. Both times was when she was sick and fever spiked. Now every time she’s sick we’re on edge just wondering if another one is coming. Prayers for you.
Damn. I can’t imagine. That sounds like a hell of a day. I hope they figure out what caused it quickly. Prayers to you and your family.
We are still in the hospital. He is likely to go home tomorrow but they want to monitor oxygen during sleep one more night. He is going to have oxygen at home for the next month until his next surgery.
Those sound exactly like febrile. You dr can prescribe a diazepam suppository to give if she has another. The good thing is kids tend to outgrow them but like you, whenever our son get a fever we are nervous as hell.
That’s what they were and we have it in the medicine cabinet ready to pull out if we have it. Every time she’s starting to get sick we make sure it’s at the front of the medicines.
What’s up guys. I joined the club this morning around 4. Looking forward to a lifetime of stress and headaches that I’m told is totally worth it
My two week old son I am pretty sure has Colic. Anyone have good suggestions to help with that? Wife and I having a tough time, we are moving next week and our dog tore her ACL Friday. Its kind of been a nightmare around here and we are getting little sleep because what I think now from Google is the fact he has colic and won't stay sleeping for long stretches
Not a doctor, but I think two weeks is too early to determine that. Our daughter was very fussy the first couple of weeks and our pediatrician recommended this.... It changed everything. I had a buddy in a similar situation and recommended it to him and it worked for them too. Be warned it takes like 3 days of use to really settle everything down/kick in.
Levi is 3.5 months now, and an absolute delight that I by no means deserve. Must be my wife’s good will stored up. He will sleep completely through the night, so much that if we miss the alarm to wake and feed him we pay for it the next day as he tries to catch up on food and become a milk geyser. He has the sweetest & calmest disposition I have ever seen. And he has 1,000,000 faces. He looks like a different boy in almost every picture. And he has monster height to this point. Born 22” and was 26.5” at his 3 month check up, putting him in the 97th percentile. On one hand, my wife and I are extremely average height so I am sure it will end at some point but on the other hand, there are some 6.5-7 footers on my mom’s side of the family. Sorry for the brag post, but this dude is awesome, and a huge part of my stepping away from the board for awhile.
Dealt with this with my daughter but a lot of times colic is reflux issues. Took us a while to figure this out and dealt with a lot of very bad nights but once we got her medicine straight for it was like a different baby.
How is his head % measuring? My kid had/has similar percentiles and after a year of being told it’s nbd we were told last week “yeah peds should have been taken over care as soon as there was a concern of macrocephaly.”
his head size is closer to normal, around 85th percentile. His weight is 90th percentile. His BMI is only around 8th percentile though but mostly due to how lanky he is.
Our daughter's head size started going off the charts so we had to get an MRI to make sure there was no macrocephaly, thankfully there wasn't.
Pedantic moment: Macrocephaly is simply the state of having a large head (literally just means “big head”) and is determined just by measuring a kid’s head with a tape measure. Imaging is to help determine the cause.
I would have probably been diagnosed with this if it were today I had to be born by emergency c-section because my head just wouldn't fit. I now wear a size 7-15/16 or 8 depending on the hat
I wear a 7 5/8. Luckily, I grew up with and played baseball with Kevin Mench so that took all the head size pressure off.
Our daughter is 3 weeks tomorrow. We’re battling this same thing. Thank you for the recommendation. This was purchased today. Really timely post.
Our daughter had colic. It shows up later. Typically around 6 weeks of age until 11-12 weeks. From 6-10 pm she would cry for 3.5 hours regardless of what we did. Then at 10 she would be tired and sleep. Our doctor told us it would stop at 11-12 weeks and it miraculously did. Reflux is the most likely issue at this age. Your doctor will know what to look for and can prescribe things to help. Our 3 month old son has reflux and sleeps in a Danny sling to use gravity to help. We also have to feed him in his side to help. A speech pathologist was the most helpful for isolating how to help him eat. Good luck. I know how hard the crying can be.
Bold strategy. How much is he sleeping? Not sleeping much isn’t too uncommon for a 2 week old. Still sucks. We tried everything for our son, he cried every late afternoon into night and slept very little. Didn’t actually sleep through the night until after he was 1. Still wakes up at 4am at 4 years old. May daughter on the other hand has never not slept through the night, so it goes.
I know things have changed a lot in the last 14 years but we switched my son to a lactose free formula after he was super gassy and couldn’t sleep for shit and it made all the difference in the world. He went from crying (gas pains) and not sleeping to sleeping through the night and the happiest baby pretty much overnight.
I can't speak for Colic but it seems a little early to determine that. a lot of babies just don't sleep much the first month or so. i would just hammer home the breastfeeding if y'all are going that route. that was the only way to get both my kids to sleep at that age.
we had a similar issue with our second with him being upset and trouble sleeping and pinned it down to the formula. we didnt do lactose free, but they made a 'sensitive' one and when we changed to that it was like he was a different kid.
