Maybe the best offer was really short on term and he wants to punt until there’s a better cap situation

But they should get a cap hit of 9 millions because the wings in Buffalo are so fucking good. Unfair playing ground

at least that was a longer term deal coming off an ELC before everything clicked for him. Definitely an incredible deal for the aves though.

Now all I need is for Hoffman and maybe 1-2 others to sign and Tampa can figure out how much we will be raped and pillaged to get rid of some contracts.

Hall had them give him an NTC and NMC? I guess be wants to make sure he only gets traded to a contender if it’s his choice. Seems weird on a 1 year deal.

they have to want to leave. We have had a pretty good track record of our guys wanting to stay. Even if it’s a bridge.

I will be curious if the Johnson situation gives these guys some pause. Doubtful, but it’s the first time the club loyalty was not reciprocated.

that’s for the second deal. Could have an impact. Obviously the pandemic and flat cap made a bad situation worse. Johnson didn’t sign a team friendly contract though. Yzerman got no discount from the middle 6 forwards. Stamkos, hedman, and kucherov took less and point agreed to a bridge. Those contracts in the 5s are all fair value or in some cases an overpay.

One is literally money for players. Everything else comes down to the owner. It’s not the same and you know it.

Canadian teams benefiting from paying players in American dollars is “money”.
There are plenty of positive changes that could be made to this league. Salary cap based on income tax isn’t one of them.

especially because it opens up the black hole of how do you account for players salary after they get traded

an interesting thing I heard, why not use what is left on the players salary against the cap instead of just gross income. I don’t know how realistic it would be though. So a guy is left with 7 after taxes, you use that number. The team/player is still paying a tax to the state, province, country...but it would make it closer. That would benefit bigger markets though, that’s the issue I see here.

it’s just not normal to me that 8 millions in Tampa bay money means 11 in Toronto money

The salary cap and contracts are just post state/city income tax. If you get traded from Florida to the Rangers you get a raise (eaten up by taxes), NY pays you more but you make the same amount

If you want to go there, just no. Players get to buy their house cheaper? Cool, but it will be sold in CAD when they move back to the US/Europe, the endorsements are in CAD, and most things are quite a bit more expensive than in the US and you only need to shop for a few minutes to realize it. Grocery shopping is incredibly cheap in the US (and Europe) compared to Canada, though I don’t think players give a fuck about sales on avocadoes.

Plus, profits are in CAD, you have to pay more for your coaches, staff, scouts, (since that’s the direction you want to take) etc.

The income tax is something tangible, for which we have data readily available. It’s not based on plus or minuses about certain situations (we’re not arguing for a tax based on the yearly temperature averages, here). Some teams are literally playing with a bigger salary cap, it’s pretty clear cut.

Wouldn’t benefit bigger markets necessarily. You can be a big market team in a high income tax market and vice versa. The Alberta teams have it pretty sweet, I’d think. Though that might have more to do with sales tax.

Salary cap and player salaries are not based on net salary, it’s on gross.

i probably again wrote it very badly.

i meant if you are going to use what is left for the player,(net income) the team still has to pay these taxes. So a team like Toronto will be able to give up more money than a team like Winnipeg. That 7 million contract that you pay 10 is easier for a team like Toronto to just hand out than it is for a team like Winnipeg.

Right, low income teams in a high tax province/state would be hurt. So Ottawa and NYI (though the Isles are spending to the cap now)

So they’re pre state/city income tax, not post. You do lose out on money if you get traded from Florida to New York as a player.

The panthers are still under the belief that Schmidt is coming to them. Just need AP to officially decide. I would assume it happens unless AP goes to another team.

The income tax thing is definitely a benefit but one thing that gets lost that was referenced earlier in this thread is players get taxed on game by game basis on what states the game occurs in. At least I know that is the case for players who are American residents, not sure how it works if you play for a Canadian team or are not a US resident. I know an accountant that does several mlb and nba players taxes and that’s how he told me it works.

The tax thing is blown way out of proportion. This entire issue was never brought up until stamkos had the audacity to take less money to stay in Tampa. Toronto media couldn’t comprehend why so they used the tax issues as the reason and hit it repeatedly.
