Really good. He’s most comparable to Isaiah Simmons, just not as big. He’s a great athlete, has great instincts, is great in coverage and against the run.... he just doesn’t have elite size so he’s probably more of a late first round or early second round guy.

so one thing i want to achieve. Just looked back at the box score of the clemson GT game

They played 4 QBs including their backup punter (not their 5 star QB DJ Ukelele btw)
They had 10 guys taking carries
They had 20, yes 20, guys getting a receiving target and 18 guys getting a reception, including 2 defensive players and both sons of Dabo

I want ND to be THAT good, just a single game

It would be nice if the beat writers would discuss this, but we're going to have to wait until Brian Kelly retires. At which point they will freely discuss his complete failure to develop quarterbacks in a way that suggests they weren't ignoring or denying it for years.

    83 things to say...

1a — Mike Tirico with a portent for Saturday afternoon: “The wide receiving corps: Very interested to see if they can take a progressive step as they did last week vs. Florida State.”

1b — As an aside, ‘portent of things to come’ is my No. 3 pet peeve in modern English writing/speech. A portent signifies something unfortunate is likely to come. So its redundant to add “things to come.” Carry on…

2 — Quick shot to McKinley broken up nicely by Chandler Jones who played the first half of this game like the real Chandler Jones Saturday. Does McKinley have to catch that? I dunno, that was a pretty well-timed poke by Jones.

Tight ends running duel skinnys were open. They probably will be for the next few seasons…

3 — Book misses a diving McKinley on a short field-side out but one snap later, zone-blocking to the left ahead of Kyren Williams provides the runner the first of his NINE first downs Saturday.

Williams has 32 first downs/touchdowns this season—9 in three separate contests.

4 — Kevin Austin quick out, stiff-arm, 18 yards, and Notre Dame fans everywhere just perked out. Big day coming for the junior rookie. Amiright? Who’s with me!?

5 — Just a beautifully timed call and expertly blocked designed draw for Ian Book, following Aaron Banks and Kyren Williams over left guard for a 22-yard gain. Michael Mayer destroying his assigned defender far downfield as well. Give Jarrett Patterson a key win as well.

6 — You know what I always say: when it’s 1st and 10 and you have a chance to force a hitch route to a double-covered Brock Wright for a potential 5-yard gain, well, you just gotta take that chance…

7 — Tight window for Book to hit Mayer on the deep cross behind linebackers and crossing their zones—quality pass drops by both to create the tight space—and the triggerman just misses high.

Wind might’ve impacted that throw, either in his mind prior to release or thereafter in reality.

8 — Welcome to the season Ben Skowronek. Love that in-route out of a bunch formation with Mayer drawing double team attention. 3rd-and-10 conversion and this drive has promise.

9 — Another designed draw behind Banks and Williams but both eschew the defensive end and its an easy TFL vs. Book as a result…Book sacked on the next snap with a corner blitz by Chandler Jones. (That he saw coming, mind you). Not much downfield available but a quick drag to Avery Davis was there as a safety blanket.

McKinley never looked back for the ball on a drive route to the end zone—open after about 7 yards. I think that’s where Book intended to throw hot. Kyren probably had to chip Jones but chose to run his wheel route into coverage.

10 — I bet that snap drove Rees/Kelly crazy on Sunday morning.

Give up check down on 3rd-and-long and Jon Doerer is called upon for a 32-yard field goal.

3-0 ND after one long, uneven drive.

11 — Drew White keys a four-and-out with a run Stuff followed by a shared pressure to force an opening Cardinals punt. (Javian Hawkins for a game-best 28 yards on the first snap)

The Condor, Kyle Hamilton, handles it on 3rd-Down with a swooping pass breakup vs. Tutu Atwell who is likely wondering why a small forward was able to guard him in space on that snap…

12 — Big hole for Williams as Eichenberg, Banks, Patterson, Kraemer (backside) and Tremble (lead) all win. Two snaps later, a little Jet action to Davis for 10 yards behind Skowronek and Williams. Love the run-blocking efforts by Williams and the Irish receivers.

13 — More Jet action for Davis, this time for the boundary, again for 10 yards, and Aaron Banks just swallowed a human being whole on his pulling block to the right.

14 — Book with an ill-advised (and fortunately poorly thrown) field-side out route to a completely covered Lenzy. That’s a throw for Dan Marino, not Ian Book. Strange one.

15 — Two snaps later, Book is way late to Mayer on a wheel. Incidentally, Mayer has run better routes than this saunter down the sidelines in his brief career to date. Mayer was open early and drifted, though Book should’ve back shouldered that ball as xsoon as Mayer looked back.

16 — Book to Tremble on a quick hook to move the sticks on 3rd-and-4. Tremble all man after the catch to ensure the mark.

17 — Chandler Jones breaks up a slant to McKinley. Chandler Jones is the player of the quarter here in South Bend.

McKinley’s frame and lack of suddenness dictates he must use his body to consistently make this one-on-one catch. You have to want it more than that and finish the route at full speed.

Jones was tougher to the ball even though McKinley had inside position.

18 — 3rd-and-Goal and ND’s receivers can’t separate, Book is tracked expertly by the spying linebacker Monty Montgomery (6-on-7 up front vs. ND’s OL, Williams, and Book) and Doerer is back on for another red zone field goal.

6-0 ND despite a 25-4 snap advantage and it was at this point you knew the game was going to be nothing close to what we forecasted.

19 — I’m a fan of Louisville’s chippiness on D in this game. On a related note, I’m not a fan of Notre Dame’s lack of urgency offensively or fire. I don’t see a receiver out there that desperately wants to make a play right now. Just running routes for the sake of running the route.

20 — First quarter rush efficiency 61.5% on 13 attempts. First quarter passing acumen: 5.5 yards-per-attempt (bad), 11 yards-per-catch (not good), and two shots downfield (McKinley, Mayer). I can live with just two shots into the wind.

21 — 3rd-and-7 for the Irish defense and Cunningham, standing proudly in the clean pocket, drops a dime to Tutu Atwell over TaRiq Bracy before Shaun Crawford can get there to make the play. That’s a heckuva throw.

Not a good angle by Crawford who looked like he looped behind expecting to make the sideline pick on an overthrow.

22 — Hey it’s Isaiah Foskey…sets the edge to aid a Run Stuff (Credit to Howard Cross who is playing well in relief this season.)

23 — Outstanding play by Crawford to negate a Tutu Jet sweep. JOK staying home to force the action outside as well.

Crawford is far-and-away Notre Dame’s second-best safety. Disturbingly so, I might add.

24 — You don’t see Tommy Tremble lose too many at the point of attack, but there you go for a TFL on Kyren Williams.

25 — Third-and-9, Book is sacked and I put that one on Tommy Kraemer though there was a six-man rush and Book was in trouble anyway with a well-defended bunch to his left and McKinley wearing solo coverage like a cheap suit to the right.

26 — Louisville drive ruined before it can start by a stupid personal foul on offensive lineman Renaldo Brown, hitting Kurt Hinish late in the back. That’s penalty #5 and personal foul #2 for the Cardinals in the first 20 minutes.

JOK effectively ends this march with a 2nd-and-18 TFL one snap later.

27 — Salerno lets it bounce on the ensuing punt, otherwise he was probably taking that one 92 yards to the house…

28 — 3rd-and-3 and Ian Book with a 20-yard escape left to move the chains. If he could pass the football well Book would be a dynamic dual-threat…

29 — Joe Wilkins blocks pretty well at times, too. He mixes it up with Brock Wright (buries his man) Eichenberg and Tremble here to spring Williams for 10 more.

You know, if Notre Dame’s wide receivers could get open they’d be dynamic dual threats as well…

30 — I have to admit…I wish it didn’t often come down to a pre-snap “chess match” with Louisville’s defense. I did not foresee that pre-game. The Cardinals just did not respect Notre Dame’s ability to take them deep.

31 — Not a great read by Tyree who cut inside with a lane to the field. Great future. Good near future, too. Just need a little C’Bo in my life.

Notre Dame needed some more angry out there.

32 — Well-designed screen is limited to 12 yards (Tyree) but he’s tracked from behind JUST before you could tell he was about to kick it into gear. Damn.

Louisville is really hustling out there.

33 — I feel like Tyree just turned a 12-yard gain over left tackle into six yards. There’s some film review in his future with Coach Taylor.

34 — Michael Mayer. My Goodness. He’s going to be Cole Kmet next season one year ahead of when Cole Kmet turned into Cole Kmet. Junior year? Rudolph? Gasp…Eifert? (Different frames I suppose)

35 — Notre Dame’s receivers are going through the motions. Or these route concepts are allowing them to go through the motions. Book often has nowhere real to throw and if he’s not confident or clicking anyway, it just all shuts down.

36 — Gotta admit, I did not foresee: “Designed QB Draw” as the most important aspect of this first half offense, either.

37 — I like the throw by Book but it was a half-tick late (almost had to let it go just before Austin planted his foot to head to the corner, forcing Austin a step out of bounds to force the Irish into a field goal situation, again, after a long drive.

No veteran toe-tap by Austin, either. Maybe if he didn’t take 22 months between games?

38 — Man that changes the entire tenor of the half for Notre Dame fans, not to mention the team. Kevin Austin with a Third Down touchdown and a 13-0 lead is SO much more tenable than what ensues instead.

39 — Fake Field goal…it actually was there. I think Bramblett didn’t trust the whole in front of him which makes sense, since he’s, you know, a punter.

Also…15-point favorites + fake field goals…meh? Save that for Clemson when you need something special.

40 — What is Dillan Gibbons doing on this play? Just murdered Michael Mayer in the back running over to the pile.

41 — DOINK. Jason Turner’s field goal drills the middle of the cross bar and Louisvilles best drive of the half comes up empty. Join the club.

Someone on our message board asked who might’ve bee trash-talking Turner after the miss that elicited an F-Bomb of sorts from the kicker…judging by who I saw approach the picture prior, I’m going with Kyle Hamilton.

All in on that bet, Alex.

Irish trail, I mean lead, 6-0 at the break

42 — Second Quarter Rush Efficiency: 44.4% on just 9 rushes. (Book was 2-3 passing for 24 yards: Mayer and the screen to Tyree)

43 — These are my DRIVE MVP’s in the first half for the Irish offense: Doerer, Doerer, Bramblett, Book/Mayer (and that ended in a failed fake field goal).

44 — Jack Lamb fights off a block to make a solid tackle in kickoff coverage to start the half.

I need someone to explain to me how he can’t be part of the solution at Buck? Not strong enough? Too much time missed over the last couple years due to injuries? Hip injury slow him to much in camp and got buried?

45 — You know, he’s not exactly sitting behind Smith, Te’o, and Stonebreaker…

46 — Anyone else think Hayes carries too much weight these days and its effected his suddenness more so than amplified his power? Hawkins around the boundary for a first down.

47 — Drew White sheds for his second stuff but that was aided by the push from Notre Dame’s defensive front and gap control. Hinish, Ogundeji and Hayes get it done for a TFL on the ensuing snap.

48 — Not sure if Hayes as supposed to maintain outside rush lane integrity here on 3rd-and-14 or had the freedom to try to make a play, but when he broke inside, Malik Cunningham escaped around the vacated edge and his 11-yard sprint allowed the Cardinals to go for it on 4th-and-2 near midfield.

Cunningham keeps off the boundary edge with Hayes and Simon effectively blocked for an 8-yard gain on fourth down.

50 — Simon flailing a bit on that tackle attempt. That’s the second junior defender I’ve used the word ‘flail’ to describe in a film review this fall.

51 — Cross and White, stout at the point. Glad White regained some form of his 2019 self during Saturday’s run defense triumph.

52 — Kiser caught up in the wash filing in for a briefly dinged Owusu-Koramoah. 12 yards the easy way.

53 — I assume that was Simon’s responsibility on the wheel route to Hawkins for 29 yards to the shadow the Irish goal? Simon at no point covered his boundary linebacker position, instead needlessly doubling a crossing tight end.

That’s Louisville’s longest gain of the day and the Irish could use Asmar Bilal.

54 — Marshon Ford with the offset fullback flare to the field flat and Liufau can’t get there in time. (Say that five times fast.)

That’s a tough assignment for Liufau in his third career half-game playing from scrimmage.

Too easy last four plays for the Cardinals offense and they lead 7-6 midway through the third quarter in a game Notre Dame should hold at least an edge of 6-10 points.

55 — I mean…that onside kick call was epic. Tip your hat to Scott Satterfield but in a game of inches, Louisville contacted Notre Dame a couple inches too early.

I did not know that was a rule, but it’s a rule that makes sense, especially as a reviewable play.

56 — Jack Lamb’s aggressiveness helped negate that recovery. If he doesn’t attack, that’s Cardinals ball without blinking.

57 — Great call by Tirico: “Louisville with the lead and the momentum, pushes the chips to the middle of the table, doubles down, and takes the big stack to their side! Smith with the recovery.”

Of course it didn’t count, so it’s more like a misdeal, but I digress…

58 — From an emotional standpoint, I’d like to see Notre Dame approach Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh as Louisville did last Saturday’s in South Bend. There’s no reason Pittsburgh’s natural three-game losing streak anger should exceed Notre Dame’s after this snooze-fest performance against the Cardinals.

59 — Brock Wright getting after it as a run-blocker. Williams for 12 behind the senior and Tommy Tremble.

60 — 3rd-and-1 Jet Sweep to Javon McKinley gains 15 yards. That was impossible as of 13 months ago. Still strange.

Credit Tremble again for the key block.

61 - McKinley, Wright, Hainsey, Kraemer…as Verne Lundquist often-mused: “MY GOOD-NESS!” Just bulldozing the left boundary for a Tyree gain of 15.

I cannot wait to see this line and tight end trio play against Pittsburgh’s front!

Kraemer was awesome on that snap.

62 — McKinley with a technique drop. You’ve heard me say ‘concentration’ drop? That was a failure of technique. Either extend your hands or use that body as a shield big man…

63 — Book could’ve hit Mayer for the first down on this 3rd-and-8 flood. In fact, I’m shocked he did not let that rip with the defender’s back to him while positioned two yards too far inside. McKinley and Davis were not open and Austin fell three different times on his drag route.

Regardless, heady escape by Book to his left yet again for first down yardage, then he caps it off by juking Cardinals linebacker Monty Montgomery with a stutter step for the go-ahead score.

64 — Two-point conversion: One-on-one to McKinley was the only option on this play. (Bunch faux blocked for Williams on a look screen but Book never considered that notion.)

Not a lot of competitive catches being made by McKinley and the Irish today…Kei’Trel Clark and Chandler Jones out-performed them, which is a bit disconcerting with the Panthers maniacal adherence to press coverage on tap.

(Fortunately, there’s no Darqueze Dennard nor Trae Waynes for Narduzzi in the Steel City.)

12-7 Irish with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

65 — Did anyone notice the officials messed up Louisville’s downs on the ensuing drive? Didn’t matter in the end because they gained 8 yards (and it was marked as a first down), then four, then zero, then seven to move the sticks before fulling realizing, marking the error.

66 — Cunningham’s cramping up, including his right hand cramping. Not sure I’ve seen that before with a quarterback.

He should really consider drinking more water if he wants to survive.

67 — Williams gains 11 behind Mayer, Eichenberg, but the Cardinals defense stiffens (could Book have kept this handoff that results in a TFL to Wiliams? Seems like he had the contain defender leaning inside at least?) Maybe not. Sometimes things are just well-defended.

Punt after a telegraphed boundary screen to Tyree gains little.

68 — Bramblett: the good punter without a great leg. If he brings the Coffin Corner back en vogue I’ll make sure to do a feature on him.

69 — JOK with a punishing TFL coming down scrimmage. Did you know Cunningham hit nine consecutive throws in this game? Never felt like it, did it?

70 — I know that was interference on Nick McCloud, but it was savvy, conniving, veteran pass interference, nothing like the lost puppy-type when corners have no idea what’s going on or where the ball could conceivably be.

So I’ll allow it. I feel like there’s a ‘Nick McCloud in coverage’ in all of us.

71 — Louisville’s offense gets penalized a bit too much for my taste. You know how mad you’d be at Brian Kelly as an Irish fan if, down 12-7 midway through the fourth quarter, Notre Dame had two pre-snap procedure penalties on 1st and 10 and 1st and 15?

That’s how Satterfield’s group just shot itself in the foot.

72 — Untouched Daelin Hayes with the immediate read, explosion in space, and big hit on the flair pass to the boundary flat. That’s a nice cherry on top of his highlight tape for 2020. (Now let’s get off some blocks.)

73 — Rylie Mills read that play as well. That’s encouraging for basically his 30th career snap?

74 — Louisville punts back to the Irish with 7:55 remaining and they’ll never see the pigskin again. For the second straight week, had Notre Dame hammered the ball into the end zone (this time they didn’t try) on a game-ending drive, I feel the Irish faithful would’ve felt better about the overall tenor of the contest.

75 — Brock Wright had a day. I could see the senior blocker back in 2021 for a fifth year (due to COVID eligibility allowance). Here he springs Williams for 9 yards.

Williams style complements this OL and TE group perfectly. So too does C’Bo’s.

    FREE C’BO!!

76 — Tirico: “This is Notre Dame’s seventh drive of the game. Clemson scored seven touchdowns in the first half.” — Well I guess that means they’d only be able to get three or four touchdowns per half against Notre Dame then, Mike. TAKE THAT!!

77 — Louisville shows the potential for 7 different pass rushers on this 3rd-and-5 snap and here’s what I’ve expected Book to excel all season: check a protection, recognize post-snap, shift in the pocket, fire short, on the move, and accurately to McKinley (well maybe not that part, but that’s where we are) for the first down. Competitive catch by McKinley using his body as well at the 5:06 mark. Would’ve been pretty tense had the Irish been forced to punt instead.

Underrated play from Saturday. Need four more of those this Saturday.

78 - Is there any other way of describing Polian’s gait as “stalking those sidelines?”

79 — 3rd-and-6 and it’s Skowronek’s turn, this time on the old Claypool drag play underneath three criss-crossing teammates for the unmolested first down.

80 — Final of three crucial third downs, again 3rd-and-5 and its another team effort as Eichenberg, Banks, and Patterson each win play side while Michael Mayer provides the key seal as Williams cuts back from right to left for the game-sealing 24-yard carry.

    God bless the running game.

81 — Ian Book gets a shot in blocking downfield as well, running farther for that block than he ever passed the football against the Cardinals…

Irish kneel it out—and that drew a chorus of boos you can’t hear on TV by the way, which is a bit much don’t you think?—to move to 4-0.

82 — Has there ever been a better option as the ‘safe’ wide receiver behind the kneel down formation in case of a fumble than Chase Claypool?

83 — Interior quartet of Hinish, Ademilola, Cross, Lacey. Kudos on a heckuva an effort if not a collection of gaudy statistics to show for it. MTA should join at full strength this Saturday.

    Good answer from Kelly -

On Jahmir Smith going public about mental health:
I don't know if it's ever easy to talk about, but it does not have a connotation of weakness. That is so far from the truth. He's a strong young man and I love him for his courage. There are so many pressures to live up to expectations, your own or others .. it is something we've always had on our plate. It doesn't carry the same negative as it has over the years

So when do we discuss playing Pitt?

Better yet, do we discuss playing Pitt?

They seem like a decent team with a good defense. Not decent enough to beat us if we play anywhere near normal, but good enough to keep it close if we don't. Thoughts?

Think we lose 13-10 this week. I think it’s gonna be incredibly ugly

yep - couple of early picks by book make the offense sputtered. Defense looks good but we just can’t move the ball

Interesting. The line is ND -10 yet it seems most everyone is prepared for a close, lackluster game. Can't say I disagree. Hope we are wrong.

I feel like playing crappy and escaping against Louisville last week removes some of the Clemson look-ahead risk. But if the passing game doesn't get it together, this will be a coinflip.

Was checking some Pitt Box Scores. They held Austin Peay to 1 yard rushing. Lol

jurkovek was 19/35 for 358 and 3 TDs. But also had -42 yds rushing.
