Something about common core is supposed to teach them how multiply and divide large numbers in their head without the use of calculators
- F my life. -One of my co-workers retired the last day of September. He was the A.P. US history teacher. Now, the principal is switching his A.P. Classes over to me
Makes sense regarding common core. I've only heard people bitch about it but had no personal exposure to it. Guessing that's a function of being too lazy to learn anything new.
Yes but all the administration does is stress about state scores and data. Plus they dropped the classes on me with no warning today, talking about they need to take a benchmark test today. I literally just got the classes assigned to me this morning, the fuck am I supposed to do about a benchmark test I knew nothing about?
Hell nah, I have 4 classes everyday A-day = 4 blocks of World History B-day = 1 block of Mississippi Studies, 1 block of repeat U.S. history and 2 blocks of A.P. U.S. history
So a few of my friends suggested I should look into becoming a PE teacher. So I reached out to the education folks at my alma mater to figure out what I’d need to do to get licensed. Basically I’d have to take what amount to like six semester of a full-time class load before I could even do the licensure class. Seems a bit much to teach PE.
What was your minor? Depending how many hours you have in a particular subject, you can certified there as well
I majored in Sport Management and got an MBA. But I have less than zero interest in teaching business.
I don’t really even know what’s offered these days. When I was going they school, the class offerings were pretty basic around here. We didn’t even have economics classes.
how many Ed classes did you take? You went through other programs so why are you surprised the Ed program would have a number of requirements
Most of the classes I’d have to take aren’t education classes. And one of my former supervisors got a job teaching history classes while having taken nothing more than the general education history classes and one semester of classes this past spring to get her licensure at the same school I graduated from. She had gone thru the same major I went thru so she didn’t have any more education credits to her resume than I did. That’s why I was surprised at how many classes I’d have to take.
Look into an M.A.T. Program. You take 2 classes and then can get a 3 year non-renewable license. Take 2 more classes and you can get the 5 year renewable license
All of my guy friends that are teachers (in VA) did a couple years of a few online classes a semester and were teaching while doing those classes as well. Don’t know details but it does seem it should be “easier” than what you stated
Happy 7th anniversary to my proudest moment as a teacher...when my former student got called before Vanderbilt’s honor council because I taught him so well.
Email a scholar about them plagiarizing an assignment. Their response “that was only 1 time!” This is a scholar in my APUSH class, sigh
Parent emailed me trying to guilt trip me about how my class was the only class her child got a C in. I promptly sent her screenshots showing that all my test are multiple choice and that they can use their notes during the test (on Canvas). Said student hasn’t made higher than a D on any of them. She hasn’t responded since.
That reminds me of a pretty great interaction I had a couple weeks ago when I asked the PE students to send me some max numbers for basic exercises (pushups, situps, and wall sit) at the end of the 6 weeks. Never got a reply to my question.
Actual instructions given on an assignment. Answer the following questions in a few sentences after watching the documentary. And by a few sentences, I mean MORE THAN ONE. Use proper grammar, syntax, and spelling. If you write "i" lowercase as a personal pronoun at any point in your answers I will take 10 points off each time. I'm halfway through the first class, and I've already deducted about 100 points so far.
Question for the teachers What are teachers general feelings about PTA's? From the outside looking in, they always seem to be more of something for stay at home moms to do than an actual help to the school, but I may be way off.
Coming from a Title I school with minimal parental involvement, a healthy PTA is a strong indicator of high community involvement, which is a great thing for all aspects (athletics, academics, discipline, etc.) In a nutshell, they greatly increase accountability both ways, for the students and the teachers. Are there some annoying helicopter/bulldozer parents? Naturally. But I will take that 1,000 times over a parent I’ve had to call for the 20th time because their kid can’t stop fucking up, fully knowing that nothing will change.
Final tally...180 points deducted across 4 classes. One kid use zero capitalization or punctuation of any kind whatsoever. It was like reading E.E. Cummings’s response to watching Blackfish
ours is great and gives out quite a bit of money to help fund teacher needs especially for technology. I got my classroom clicker set because of them.
I’ve taken full advantage of our PTSO. They offer a grant every year that teachers can apply for stuff. 2 years in row, they’ve granted me new camera equipment, simply because I’m one of the only teachers who applies.
Weird dude wore his kids letter jacket to the board meeting and went on an insane rant says he’s going to take action the district won’t like
This was a new one. I'm giving a test today to roughly 1/3 of the kids in class and 2/3rds of kids at home. We have this software called GoGuardian that lets me observe ALL of their laptop screens at the same time. With about 20 minutes left in class, I'm taking a look at the people who haven't finished yet and one girl is only on #27 of 50. I send a message to her laptop to hurry up. She then pulls up the chat window and says "Mr. Drew, can I have more time? I was eating my lunch." The girl stopped in the middle of a test to eat lunch for 15 minutes and expected that to be a valid excuse to be given more time. WTF!!??!?! I texted back "uhhhhh, why did you stop in the middle of the test to each lunch?" Her response "I like to eat my lunch fresh." BTW, this lunch was at 2:15
- Administration telling me that I need to be teaching the AP US History kids regular US History as well as AP US History because they take both the AP Test and the State Test - Me questioning how I'm supposed to teach 2 different curriculums at the same time in the allotted class time - Administration: There's a strategy - Me inside my mind (There's no fucking strategy that will be successful for this)
Lol at admins thinking APUSH kids would have trouble with the Mississippi state graduate exam for history without extra work.
