Kind of random question, but figured this would be a good thread for it. I am close to finishing my re-read prior to Rhythm of War and am going to be off for over a week starting Monday. I've read most of Sanderson's stuff at this point.

Do you all have any recommendations on books that would be solid to read (not related to anything Sanderson) in between now and the release of Rhythm of War? If it's a series, I would probably hold off given I'll drop everything once RoW comes out, but figured I would try to get some stuff on a list at least.

EDIT: Didn't see the books impossible to put down thread. I'll check there, but happy with any recommendations.

Looking for just a quick standalone? Try Dark Matter or Recursion (or both) by Blake Crouch.

The Licanius trilogy is very good. Similar feel to a Sanderson book. First book is called The Shadow of what was Lost. Bonus is that the audiobooks are read by Michael Kraemer, same as most of Sanderson's books.

My favorite fantasy short story ever. He crammed 350 pages worth of story into 80 pages.

Just finished Arcanum unbounded. Only ones left are the second mistborn series but I really didn't like the first one.

Do we have a genre thread yet? Looking for something new. Read all of WoT, grrm (fuck him), lightbringer, kingkiller, SoT, and a bunch of other good series. But now what?

Can we get a series recommendation list or maybe thread?

Recently read Rage of Dragons and its sequel by Evan Winters, and it's really solid. I'd recommend it.

The Licanius Trilogy (Shadow of What Was Lost? -- think thats the first book title) is also very Sanderson-esque. Good plot/story, but a little dense and light on action. I enjoyed it though, and think if you enjoy Sanderson stories, you'd enjoy it as well.

I was thinking about this the other day while watching Wandavision.

I feel like at some point a decade or more from now, there's a good chance that the Cosmere novels get adapted into a new massive IP set of films kind of like the Marvel universe has been. The Cosmere is super diverse in terms of having high fantasy, some more young adult stuff, some heisty kind of thriller stuff, etc. With the way things are set to go, it would also allow them to put together an Avengers: Endgame style finale to the series once the different series of the Cosmere start to merge together and come towards a larger resolution.

I'm assuming that at some point the Marvel stuff is going to start to wind down or at least become less popular. Then folks will be looking for a new IP that can bring in that kind of money and have as much source material. Needless to say, Brandon has no shortage of source material.

This is probably not some novel thought, but whatever, screw you guys.

I've thought about this as well. It'd probably need to be animated or completely CGI - down to the characters themselves, due to the long time it would take to produce and film. There's just so much content that aging of the actors would be pretty conspicuous, otherwise.

I’d probably say go with Avatar style animation for the whole damn thing. It’s safer and easier. But then it wouldn’t be quite as epic as a GOT or MCU so I don’t know.

Was watching a video from Sanderson on how he was selected to finish WoT. In it, he described his normal schedule:

    12pm: wake up
    1-5pm: write
    5-10pm: family time
    10pm-2am: write
    2-4am: gaming/hobbies
    4am-12pm: sleep

Stephen King had something similar. Grrm asked him how he turns out so much work. King responded basically "it's a job. I wake up and do my job every day." Grrm replied back that he didn't understand.

Seems to be the better method. Just get plot on paper each day and then you can go back and make changes as needed.

Brandon has also said he makes very few edits, compared to most writers. He only goes through his stuff several times. Compared to someone like Rothfuss who’s talked about editing the same passage ~100 times

Reminds me of something I heard on Malcom Gladwell's podcast a few years ago. The topic was Leonard Cohen and the song hallelujah. Cohen had an anecdote where he ran into Bob Dylan in Paris and they were talking about how long it takes them to write a song. Though it had actually taken 9 years or something crazy for Cohen to finish hallelujah he said it took 9 months. He asked Bob how long it took him. Bob replied, "usually 20-30 minutes."

And this is why every song ever lists B. Dylan as the song writer.

Years ago when the book club first started up I gave Gin Buckets unlimited amounts of shit for listening to audiobooks, calling it not reading.

fast forward like 8 years I read to 90% of my books through audiobook. I love it.

I've been using audible for like 6 or 7 years now and usually cancel if I get a backlog of books. They always send a deal after about 6 months where it's like half price for 6 months or something like that. Free returns for anything, no questions asked. Just a really great service.
