Turning your back on a mountain lion is the worst thing you can do. They prefer to attack from behind as this limits their likelihood of being injured.
You don't want to turn your back or make yourself smaller against a large cat Guy pretty much did all he could minus be louder/more obnoxious and finding a large stick
I know, other large cats are like that. Seems like he did the best he could outside of avoiding that trail when the mother was with her cub at her 20 second mark
That is now my worst nightmare, if only because that situation, while highly unlikely to occur, at least seems remotely plausible
I don’t know if it would have been the right thing to do but that cougar would have been catching this old mans fastrock as much as I could throw them.
Apparently there is a longer video where he is seen fucking with the cougars cubs. If true he deserves way worse than what he got.
Can’t get the Reddit link to work so not sure if it’s the same video but it looks like he walks up on the Cubs and tries to keep his distance
I did a sunrise hike up Quandary Peak outside of Breckenridge by myself. A mountain goat baby & momma came up the summit while I was there. The mom stayed back but the baby started to approach out of curiosity. I clapped and the thing just kept coming. These things are docile but I took no chances and just bailed. Momma animals do weird shit sometimes. I can't imagine how quickly I would back up if I saw cougar or bear cubs on the trail. Spoiler: Pics from summit
They did an interview with the guy. He said he thought they were small bobcats or something rather than cougar cubs.
I can see why he made the mistake because some cougar cubs would be similar size to most bobcats. He is lucky as fuck. Also, we have 7 mule deer running through our neighborhood and it’s only a matter of time the mountain lions that live nearby will kill one. My neighbor thought one was nesting behind his backyard fence in the spring. Only 50 yards from my house, real cool.
That was really neat to see. Think I agree with the one, uh, "informed" voice, the wolves were just trying to clear him out of their territory. Didn't really want a fight
