I know I’m being a wet blanket but less spamming w memes and more substantive discussing itt imo. *ducks*
Im glad I dont have to feel a little icky listening to the Intercepted and Deconstructed pods anymore
Don't hate him as much as the rest of the less-lefty board but he was constantly losing his mind on Twitter dying on the most stupid hills, not even Russiagate stuff. Not really surprised at all and I hope people will trust the Intercept more because there are some good journalists that write for it.
The Intercept is great and glad they dont have that anchor anymore. I dont really care to but its pretty hard to make a coherent reconciliation between his work w getting Lula free and opposition to Bolsanaro, and also seeming eagerness to carry water for Putin and Trump w russiagate stuff. My only hunch is that he's personally affected by the Brazil stuff because theyve gone after his husband so hes all in on that front, while i have no damn clue why he'd push stuff for other authoritarians
She's been on there a ton regardless. Emma is great. Huge fan. Wonder if Jamie is mad / got passed over
greenwald/taibbi/sullivan/bari are all the same and it's hysterical how these elite media members have lost their minds due to people on twitter calling them clowns
At the end of the day Greenwald's courageous reporting against the NSA spying program and taking on Americas intelligence and miltary industrial complex is something a lot of these journalists would not have had the guts to publish. In fact they do the opposite and carry water for them as evidenced by "the respectable" ny times reporting and coverage during the Iraq war and weapons of mass destruction. He will forever be A1 for that in my book.
you can think his investigative reporting was important but also acknowledge over the last 5 years he got lost in the sauce, it doesnt have to be either/or
This is a “die a hero or live long enough to become a villain” scenario. Yes what he did was courageous and patriotic ect. He hasn’t lived up to that standard and been heading in the opposite direction at a rapid pace the past few years.
Agreed with Nathan. Intercepts statement also came off incredibly tantrum like. Not saying Greenwalds wasn't either
I look at the totality of it all. Nothing he has done has been so egregious to me that it outweighs that one act. Yes has he been a little whiny on Twitter. And the russia skepticism and Tucker Carlson appearances are not enough to make me think he's some fascist trump supporting Russian puppet that libs love to claim.
I’m not evaluating the totality of his career. I also don’t think he’s a puppet but he’s is undeniably carrying water for the authoritarian far right apparatus in this country the past few years. It doesn’t make you a lib because you can recognize that.
I want you to be a little bit more specific when you say "carrying water for the authoritarian far right apparatus in this country" because everytime people say this they are pointing to either his russia skepticism or his criticism of establishment democrats and mainstream media reporting. Neither of which in my opinion fall into the category of carrying water for the right wing.
When you go on Tucker and don’t push back against bad faith arguments while legitimizing them with similar arguments, regardless of the nuanced differences, it’s carrying water. It’s not just the Tucker stuff. That’s just the most clear example.
After reading his article it comes across as really whiny without really adding much new information. Its more of an opinion piece so I can see why the intercept refused to publish it. Having said that he does bring up valid points about refusal of the media to really question the Biden campaign or dig any deeper into the story. I think everyone is super vigilant about what happened last time regarding Hillary's emails so they don't want to be the one to publish/cover a story that could potentially cost Biden the election especially a story that even if true is not anywhere near as equal to the transgressions Trump has committed. I get that sentiment too and I also get why the dude that sees journalistic integrity to be the most important sanctimonious thing in the world is irate about it.
Glenn Greenwald has always been a hardcore conservative. There's blogs of his from 2006 lauding Bush for not bowing to the DC media telling him not to invade Iraq. He was an actual conservative who was fearful of government spying and overreach, but he has never been liberal and/or leftist. he fucking has a screaming melty about hunter biden and tara reade while also complaining that an actual scandal got too much press.
never forget that cuckwald let reality winner eat a prison sentence because he didn't like that she had provided a evidence of a scandal he wanted to pretend didn't exist.
You can come to a conclusion based not on the article but the two parties’ relative assertions about the other and how credible those come off. Greenwald’s assertions are just looney tunes. The Intercept’s aren’t. The likelihood that the looney tunes assertions are the accurate ones can be assessed at “very low.”
If Greenwald is shit for going on Tucker and not pushing back then so is Matty doing basically the same thing when he went on Glenn Beck's show.
Beck straight up is pushing great replacement theory dog-whistles and Matty basically went "Haha yeah, well I'm okay with more immigrants" instead of calling it out as white nationalist shit.
It's amazing how much you do the "you can accept so and so guy did some good things but is also crap for x,y, and z" and then completely dig your heels in about some zoning and urban planning neoliberal-esque dude who did something worthy of criticism.
the funniest thing is i've never listened to his pod or read more than half a dozen of his articles huh? i regularly critique his dumb takes, i just ALSO regularly critique the certain section of lefty who cry about any take he has as well
I'm probably wrong, but I've never seen you really post critiques. At most you just don't respond when someone tags you when he has some weird or backwards take.
bingo but also this is all largely built on a back and forth regarding his book that the critique of it was WILDLY not based in reality but because there were cultural and in-group signifiers that said "matty bad" certain people decided they needed to dig in on that issue i regularly dinged him for his weird cancel culture period, late primary season/early corona he lost his mind and i posted about it a lot when people shared his bad takes (successful let me defend Greenwald by bringing up unrelated topic though)
