How pissed are White Sox fans over this hiring? Avila is going to luck out and look like a genius again (see drafting Torkelson).
I think everyone across the league is in a holding pattern right now, and I bet it stays that way through the holidays into 2021. I think there's a real advantage for a team that steps out and tries to be aggressive early, but I don't expect us to do that.
There is no revenue split in MLB. Teams spent in the NHL and will spend in the NBA because there are revenue splits, caps and floors. MLB teams don't have to do shit, and these are owners pissed off at players for bitching about spending for 3-4 years coming off a season with no fans (NBA/NHL got through at least 75% of a normal year) who also got into a pissing contest with the PA last summer about literally everything. The CBA is up next year, and these next five months (barring a miraculous return to relative normalcy before spring training) are going to be the most contentious since the strike in 94.
I would sign these guys to multi year deals. 1. Pederson - OF 2. Profar - utility 3. Coloma - reliever 4. Greene - reliever
I'm thinking of the combination of our overall ineptitude when it comes to everything, as well as the disaster interview Hinch gave back in January after the scandal came out. There's no way that opening presser isn't a train wreck. If you're running the PR of this, wouldn't you want Hinch to give an interview somewhere before you announce him at the presser so the first time people see him isn't that day? There's zero chance any part of that presser has anything to do with the Tigers and the job he's taking either way, but seems like it would be beneficial to at least have something better than that old Verducci interview leading up to that.
It really doesn't matter who the manager is until the entire front office is replaced, so I officially have no feelings either way on a Hinch hire.
So they interviewed 10 other candidates and made a move within a day to hire Hinch. Slap in the face to the others IMO
On some level, but I do think we interviewed a bunch of guys who haven't been on the radar for jobs previously, which I think could help them moving forward in future searches. Just having some in the media be able to say "he interviewed well with the Tigers last year and they really liked him" can sometimes help build momentum for someone like a Lombard, Thames, Grifol, Fasano, Kelly, etc.
I'm guessing part of the reason they're hiring Hinch is they are hoping he can tell them all the things they suck at compared to what Houston was doing. Wouldn't shock me if that's the reason they talked to three different people from the Yankees in the hopes of gleaning something they don't know about. Just thought of this, but I wonder if Hinch as manager increases the odds of a Verlander return in 2022. He's out all next year with TJ and then goes into FA. We're almost certainly going to suck again, which means the fans are going to restless and Ilitch might finally feel the need to make a splash. Of course, there needs to be baseball in 2022 for that to happen, and I have no confidence right now that will happen, unfortunately, given the labor situation that's on deck.
No way he'll do that from the start for another team. He's going to want to start and try to finish with as many wins as possible for legacy reasons no matter where he goes. Wouldn't shock me if he ends up trying to play beyond his early 40s chasing 300 wins (he's at 226 currently and will be 39 going into 2022).
I'm fine with hiring Hinch. I've always liked him in Houston and think he's a good manager. But he needs to be really careful how he approaches this whenever he's announced and in all the interviews he's going to do over the next year. "I already talked about it in January" isn't going to cut it. Neither is "hey, I tried to stop it..." Only way he can move forward from it is by acknowledging that he's always going to be tainted by what happened that year, that it hurts him that he allowed it to happen, and that he understands that his actions in both allowing it continue and covering it up in media sessions from 17-19 mean he has to earn the trust of everyone. If the Tigers didn't get that kind of response today when they interviewed him (or didn't even approach the subject of how he plans to deal with it), hiring him is stupid and somewhat inexcusable.
nofatchildren I'm curious what you think of this because you're better at the numbers stuff than me. I'm talking mostly about his correlation of "The Astros' bWAR suggests they should have won more in Houston than they did, so Hinch actually sucks a a manger" stuff. Is this actually a thing? I just don't really see the premise of "they should have won 110 games instead of 107" making that much sense. https://www.southsidesox.com/2020/10/26/21533229/its-a-cinch-that-hinch-is-no-mensch
Typically you wouldn't use WAR for that calculation. You would use BaseRuns. I'm having trouble tracking down historical BaseRuns standings projections though. I agree though, 110 vs 107 is kinda pointless.
Seems like it's going to be Hinch unless something crazy happens in the negotiations. From what Morosi said last night in a TV hit, Grifol and Kotsay were the likely top 2 among the others we interviewed.
Print media is weird. Seems like people announce retirements, and then don't actually retire. Henning still writes and covers Tigers stuff. Mick McCabe is still writing HS stuff. I don't get it.
My guess is it helps when you've got Rosenthal backing you on at least some level. Same with Beck/Morosi at MLB.
Of course henning and mccoskey were the only two idiots they had to tell to turn on their microphone.
Remember that time McCoskey broke the Verlander trade before anyone, and then recanted it right before it happened? Those were good times (except the "trade Verlander" part, which is one of the saddest moments in my sports fan life).
I didn't watch and haven't seen any video clips, but from the quotes it seems like that went about as well as they could have hoped.
Any guesses as to how he fills his staff? I’ve seen the UM pitching coach always pop up in talks for MLB jobs.
I feel conflicted! I guess it was foregone that MLB would come knocking quickly so I'm glad it was Tigers.
With our young pitchers that was almost as important of a hire as manager. If you arent getting a proven mlb pitching coach, he seems like as good of a choice to take a shot on as any
My thoughts as well. MLB teams were already knocking last year, and this was inevitable. Glad it was us, I guess. He's done some amazing work with UM's staff since he's been there, and might have coached a top 10 pick in the 21 draft if he didn't leave.
