There is a responsible governor here that will shut it down. The ski towns in many cases have no, or very few, ICU beds. Med centers here can fix your knee or shoulder but not put you on a vent. Local decisions to protect health will be made if necessary.

    I appreciate the responses, gentlemen.

Well...Steamboat was first option, but they are forcing you to book lodging with them in order to ski. That increases the cost by a good bit. I looked at Copper, Breck, and those other places, and Beaver was actually the most economical option of all of those when you add up rooms, rentals, lift tix, etc. Loveland is pretty cheap, but it doesn't seem like there is much to do around there. I looked at Winter Park, but their website sucks so I couldn't find out any info. The town of Salida looked pretty Tombstone-ish, so I was instantly attracted to it. I just didn't know if Monarch was worth the 3 hour drive from Denver and then the 30 min commute from the town.

Is there anywhere else that I should give a look?

Yeah, I meant to ask if Salida is worth the extra hour drive. We are renting a vehicle. What is cool about Buena Vista? I've never heard of it.

I'll be putting down the eggnog on Christmas Eve in order to start hydrating for the rest of the week. I get motion sick pretty easily, so I'm def worried about the altitude sickness--no idea if those two are related, though.

It's just another cool resort-ish town. Nothing overly special, but a nice additional town you could check out if you get bored with Salida.

That motion sickness happen when you're driving, too? That could be a problem in the high country, fair warning. My mom gets motion sickness really bad if she's riding in a car, so she usually drives through the passes out here to avoid it.

Up here in Park City we just had a massive overachieving storm! LCC got 3 plus feet, and on the mountains over here we got at least a foot plus. We have more snow in the forecast from lake effect tonight and tomorrow. Then another big storm blows through starting Friday. Deer Valley should have a lot open come early December. PC/Canyons will likely have next to nothing open unless this next storm is massive too. Either way these are great base builder storms.

On Covid, the state just more or less announced big sweeping changes to hopefully get the numbers in check. While most of our issues are stemming from the Universities, it has broken out into the population at large and our hospitalization rate is at its breaking point. Statewide mask is not in place, no gathering at all outside of your household, more testing availability. and (finally) criminal persecutions for those whole break the rules on purpose. Those rules are in place for "at least" two weeks.

Depending on when you come, you should be fine. They'll be some hiccups early on as people adjust to the covid rules on the mountain, but overall I think we're full speed ahead here. Our economy thankfully had a better summer than initially thought, but that doesn't change the fact that we need all you guys to fly in and spend all your money here to help keep it afloat.

kids will be doing private lessons instead of ski school for morning and afternoon sessions with two other kids we know, driving home for lunch break. No lodge other than bathroom use.

Epic had issued me a credit from last year but whenever I tried to use it to buy new pass the website would crash or spin forever. I sent them an email but haven’t heard back.

Anyone have this issue and resolve?

Can someone ELI5 what an Epic day pass is and why I need it? is that like a requirement to get to be able to buy a lift ticket?

i believe at Epic mountains you have to reserve your days this year. My group has all gone ahead and got our 4 days together at CB on the calendar with Epic.

Yeah, cool, I still don't understand (I'm 5 remember). This is all written and geared towards people already experienced with the mountains/resorts, not the newbies. I'll give them a call.

It's a season pass that is good for multiple locations, you do not have to buy lift tickets on top of it. Certain resorts (like Sun Valley, Idaho) are limited on the amount of days you get with your pass, and then you can buy additional days at a discounted rate.

It's basically a lift ticket that isn't restricted to a specific resort or day (though it has limitations around partner resorts (telluride) and holidays). You can buy an epic day pass of 1-7 days, and it'll be at a discount compared to just buying actual lift tickets.

At current prices, if you know for sure you're going to ski less than 6 or 7 days, it's a better deal than getting a season pass like the Epic or Epic Local Pass.

Where are you trying to ski and when?

Yeah Epic Day Pass sounds like your best bet if that's the only time you'll ski this season. Just make sure you check on their website that your dates at Keystone are available because you'll need to reserve those dates. And then make sure you select holiday access on the day pass if your dates include one of the holidays they have listed.

So the Summit County one household per rental thing.... how strictly do we think that's being enforced?

Me and some friends are going out there in December. We are prepared to rent our own individual units. But we are also taking Covid very seriously and even paying for a rapid test for all of us the week before we leave. So should we just say eff it and stay in the 5 bedroom condo we already have reserved? We are also discussing leaving Summit to go down the road to Vail or something to avoid these rules. It may be irresponsible but I still feel safer out there than I do back at home in KC.

I also have a unit rented at Copper in January that I'm a bit concerned about... that one is myself, my kid and my dad but, letter of the law, it's multiple households.

Way too many Texans around to feel this way imo.

Anecdotally, Summit has been pretty adherent, but in terms of short-term rentals, I have no idea how strict they'll be. Likely depends on which way things go from here through the holiday season. I'm in Grand and Eagle Co. directly.

Just got a text from my brother this morning that things are going the wrong way already after just one week open. The timing of the start of the season with the rest of the train-wreck in the country doesn't bode well for the season, but fingers crossed.

Grand is where I'd prefer to go since WP is my favorite resort, but we all have Epic passes so gonna end up being Breck, Keystone, Vail or Beaver.... our condo's checkin desk is off-site, so I'm not too worried, but I also don't want to be an asshole and flaunt the rules too much.

Ha funny timing on a text from my mom tonight (she moonlights for a cleaning company here in Granby):

I'll be pretty surprised if the full ski season happens. Too many morons with money who will think getting out into the mountains will make them safe (or they just don't give a fuck at this point).

I wish I could afford a place out there to not have to deal with this bullshit.

We are going above and beyond to be responsible before going out there, but stuff like that is happening and it doesn't matter at all.

I live in Summit and my roommates all.just lost their jobs again because of the new regulations. Restaurants are Patio or take out only with limited hours. Locals have talked about reporting BnBs. It's just the ski hills and stores open and its packed at both.

Anybody else ski with their kids much?

I got my daughter started when she was 3 and with Mt Hood only a little over an hour away she's gotten in a lot of laps - she was riding blacks by 9, did some cat skiing by 10, and rode double blacks last year at 11. She loves hunting anything steep and deep in the trees and she knows the mountain well but when we were in Idaho I lost sight of her in the trees for 15-20 seconds and the feeling of panic was super unpleasant.

I use a SENA SMH10 bluetooth audio kit on my dirt bike because it's got an intercom system and it was a complete game changer. I had outdoor tech CHIPS in my helmet the last few years and really like them but they're wired and SENA just released an updated version of their snow sports specific bluetooth audio kit so I picked two of them up.

Got an email from my Aspen hotel yesterday that they are now requiring a negative test within 72 hours of arrival in the county. They are already limiting people on the mountain. Not sure what the next step is after that besides closing the mountain.

Honestly, the 72 hour requirement might be the standard needed. Probably most effective way to keep tourists from ending up in local hospitals which I think has always been the main concern.

If they can make it through Christmas, I’ll be more optimistic about the spring season.

Following up on my earlier posts, ended up leaving Summit and going to Beaver Creek, and it was an absolute ghost town. Only like 10% of the terrain was open (something like 16 runs) but never came remotely close to feeling at risk for Covid and my longest lift line in 4 days was maybe 2 minutes, only one time. Everything else was skiing right on up to the chair. We also never left the house outside of a grocery/liquor/dispensary run. The lack of snow/terrain was disappointing but I'd gladly sacrifice that for the horror show that was Winter Park and the others the last few weekends.

I did break a rib on the second to last run of the trip though. Feelsbadman. Who knew you're supposed to stay upright on skis?

Buy or borrow goggles. Glasses are only cool until you get halfway up the first lift and your eyes start watering like a faucet from the wind, or if you are a 65 year old whose been skiing that mountain for 50 years.

Keep your glasses in your backpack for the base area.

Anyone ski in Maine? Trying to decide between Sugarloaf and Sunday River. Sugarloaf is an hour further but appears to be better. Most skiing out here seems to pale in comparison to the West. Just curious if anyone knows anything.
