    58. The Abstainer by Ian McGuire (8.5/10)
    59. Hench, by Natalie Zina Walschots (7/10)

Total Power - This series as turned into lazy episodes of 24. I feel a little icky about reading these in the current climate that basically makes every bad guy an overt the top Muslim terrorist. But as far as just an empty calorie action book, I sadly am still entertained.

Ten Thousand Doors of January - This had been on my list for a while because someone heavily recommended it here. I liked it but didnt love it. The ending just kind of fizzled out for me.

The Abstainer - loved this book. McGuire just has a different writing style than anyone else. I usually hate 2nd person, but he makes it work, and everything is so gritty. DeToxRox have you read this yet?

Hench - Eh, this was ok. Good premise, w a delivery that was underwhelming. You can tell this book was influenced by The Boys show. It's about a girl who gets temp work as a Super Villain's henchman. It's funny at parts and a light read. I dont regret reading it, but I had higher expectations because it sounded like a pretty unique premise.

Abstainer was very good. Agree totally that it had a very gritty feel to it. Considering the pressure McGuire had to be under to follow up North Water, he hit a home run.

I was so frustrated by the ending. Skipped forward and didnt get the showdown between O'Connell and Doyle. Also the kid becoming a weird street preacher sucking dicks for jesus was kind of out of nowhere but whatevs

This is a prime example of why epilogues feel cheap to me. Better to leave the story where it ended organically than to force whatever that ending was.

The fisherman: Enjoyed the story related to the main character, but the middle of the book is him retelling the horror back story which I was a little less interested in.

Seinlanguage: was just a collection of his jokes from his stand up, gave it an average score since I've seen his standup and watched Seinfeld a lot, nothing new to me, but enjoyed it nonetheless

Always liked this Klimt guy because I thought his paintings looked cool. Story is 1/3 about the famous painting, 1/3 about Nazi war crimes and 1/3 about legal battles over high-priced art. It's very frustrating how difficult it was for Jewish people to get restitution for stuff lost in the war -- hadn't realized the way they were treated in Austria etc. after it all ended. "Someone else is living in your house now...shrug."

Finally reading a lot again. Will update the thread soon, but Alexander Hamilton, Shock Doctrine and The Jakarta Method are probably the three best books I’ve read this year.

Fantasy-wise it’s the first two books of Abercrombie’s Age of Madness trilogy (3rd book out next year methinks)

Young adult series about a talking cat who solves crimes in Manhattan noir style. If you enjoy cat puns like characters named Jean-Clawed you will not be disappointed

    27. Play All: A Bingewatcher's Notebook / Clive James (3/10)
Snarky Australian tv critic rambles about various epics from the Golden Age of Television like Sopranos, Wire, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, West Wing, etc. A little bit interesting to hear from a foreign voice, who knows American tv but also the international scene. Pretty boring overall though, and some of the guy's takes are just awful. He called Weeds better than Breaking Bad

I've just rated them based on books I've recently read. The second is definitely better than the first imo. I've read the first 3 or 4 a long time ago

I think so. But a lot of feels involved for me with them. 1st time I read them was as a parent and I read them simultaneously with my daughter. We had like a mini book club, then we'd watch the movies together.

A Deadly Education - I didnt love this book, but I loved the other two stand alone books Ive read by the author. I probably wouldnt read anymore books in the series if it weren't for her. That said, this seems to be one big table setting novel that makes future books interesting. I hope.

Mexican Gothic - Enjoyed this one. I dont read this type of book very often, good scary book for October. A little like a good M Knight Shamalan movie. Slow spooky build up. You know something is wrong, or off but cant quite put your finger on it, lots of suspense. Then all hell breaks loose.

Black sun - This is a fantasy in a pre-columbian Americas. Liked it a lot, wish I could read 2nd book. The world building at atmosphere was great

    27. Play All: A Bingewatcher's Notebook / Clive James (3/10)

    28. The Things They Carried / Tim O'Brien (7/10)
The first chapter, where he talked about the actual things they carried, was fantastic. The rest was maybe a tick below for me. Didn't like the obviously fake story of a guy's gf coming over to join him in the war and ending up a better soldier than the Green Berets, but I understand part of the book was about the power of storytelling and mythmaking and whatnot.

    29. The Great Catsby (Sam The Cat Detective #4) / Linda Stewart (9/10)
Last book in the series :( Can't tell from reading online whether the author and/or the real Sam have passed on or if she just quit writing the books or what.

    37. The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead 9/10 This was very good, I liked it a lot more than The Underground Railroad by Whitehead that I read earlier this year.

    38. The Secret History by Donna Tartt 8/10 Similar to The Nickel Boys, I read The Goldfinch last year and this one was much better to me. I enjoyed it more and seemed to have less in it that didn't need to be written.

    39. Backlash: A Thriller (Scot Harvath #18) by Brad Thor 7/10 I enjoyed this as an easier read and was nice to not take place in America and not have the bad guys be terrorist as much as a state actor. Nothing amazing but an enjoyable read.

    40. Killer of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Gran 9/10 This was very good and interesting but a little light on history of the FBI. Overall a very interesting and good story though.

    41. Shopgirl by Steve Martin 8/10 This was probably the easiest read of the year. Very short and entertaining.

    42. Lethal Agent (Mitch Rapp #18) by Kyle Mills 7/10 This was another book in the series that was okay, it has definitely lost a lot since Flynn died. Mills has had a couple of good books but the last few haven't been as good. Not as excited to read them anymore and it used to be my favorite series.

I'm no engineer but he described everything about the construction of the world's largest masonry dome in ways I could actually understand. Threw in a lot of fascinating details too about what everyday life was like in 15th century Italy too

Hot damn, that’s a time investment. Jealous though, it’s become one of my favorite series. I’ve actually listened to them all on audio. It’s been fun watching Buffy for the first time because the actor who played Spike does all the narration (and he’s excellent).

Pretty sure it was Cornelius Suttree who suggested Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy... Finally getting around to it, and it is fantastic.

I thought it was the "Books impossible to put down thread" that he recommended it, but. couldn't find it there.

Leave the World Behind - This is about a middle class family in NYC that splurges for a nice vacation on Long Island. They rent a really nice secluded AirBnb cabin. After a couple of days the owners of the cabin show up and ask if they can stay there because something really bad is happening in the city. They dont know what exactly. We dont know if the couple is telling the truth or not ect. Pretty good quick mystery read, but also pretty meh at the same time. I liked the book but really really really hated the ending.

The Sentinel - Good Jack Reacher book. one of the better ones in the last 4 or 5.

The Shock Doctrine - I took me about 30% of the book before I realized I had read it before. Great book that really explains how fucked our international policy is and why. Glad I read it again because I have a better foundational understanding of lots of the things discussed than when I first read it (that I barely remember doing lol)

The Silence - This is a short story about a bunch of snooty friends at a dinner party when their electronics stop working. It's social commentary on how we interact w each other and our devices. I just hated the writing style and everything else. Applaud what the author was going for, but hated the delivery.

From A Certain Point of View - Collection of short stories from various side characters in the movie. It was ok. Im glad I read it, but didnt like it as much as the one they did for A New Hope

Ready Player Two - Thoughts are in the thread for that one. I didnt have super high expectations for it. It was ok.

Moon of the Crusted Snow - Liked this one a lot. It's about a First Nations reservation in northern Canada. If it wasnt for a few roads made by a power company when they created a hydro - electric damn, they would have been completely cut off from civilization. In the 20 years or so since the road and damn was built, some of the population has become more westernized in relying on electricity and grocery stores more than tribe's traditional hunter gatherer subsistence lifestyle. One day all the power shuts off, cell phones dont work. They have no contact from the outside world. The grocery store deliveries have stopped so theyre out of food.

It's a good suspense novel, in a different setting. It's a really quick, short read. Pretty much knocked it out in a day and a half.

My gf gave me this because of my interest in musician biographies. Not sure I'd have chosen this book on my own -- it's the guy who wrote that book "The Game" about being a pickup artist so I'm assuming he's a pretty big douche. He has interviewed tons of famous people for Rolling Stone though. Snoop Dogg was one of my favorites, Lady Gaga was good too. Has anyone read anything else by Neil Strauss?

That's probably it for me for the year. Definitely the lowest book count I've had in a while, due to not having a commute anymore.

Edit: Actually, I'm going to read a novella so may have one final update. Either way, definitely not the normal reading year.

    Currently reading (spoilered for size):
