Minnesota Governor Walz is likely pausing youth sports, restricting capacity allowance at bars/restaurants and reducing in-home gathering sizes in about 12 hours. Most adults will be outraged at the loss of freedom, yet I’m annoyed it took him this long. Hope that 3 week hockey season was fun!
No, I only know one person who’s scared and she’s a massive germophobe. I think you’re correct that it’s a boogeyman to enable a large portion of the population to continue being selfish.
Fully expecting us to get shut down around Christmas or January. Florida tends to lag behind a little bit so I can’t quite pinpoint it yet. I’ve told all my coworkers to start saving as much as they can and preparing. Seems inevitable at this point.
Yep. Fucking sucks, but it’s the way to go IMO. We were right there with NY and other northern states 6 weeks ago, and our cases have barely gone up while everyone else’s are through the roof. Think the partial lockdown is gonna be it until at least the frontline workers can be vaccined. More workforce and less “wasted” tests on medical staff. Hopefully we can somewhat open things back up in March.
Daniel Ocean There are endless massive parties every night without a mask in sight. LA is going to be hit hard. The Friday restrictions have actually made things seemingly worse.
I’d like to ask that guy how a mask policy hurts the economy and then punch him in the dick (if he’s wearing a mask)
I am scared/afraid of getting COVID. I don’t let that fear impact my life, but I am not comfortable with what it could potentially do to me and my family.
I think you’re exactly right. Anecdotal but my brother has derisively said he’s not going to live in fear of the virus while he doesn’t take it seriously. He’s also said that it’s mostly the “younger” generation who is least at risk who are taking the most seriously, suggesting that those of us who do have been indoctrinated to comply and be afraid. But I am afraid. Just not for myself. I’ve been afraid of bringing it home to my pregnant wife and what the effects could be on my unborn child. I’m afraid of unknowingly giving it to my father, who is high risk. I’m afraid of unknowingly giving it to my FIL who has stage 4 cancer. I’m afraid of unknowingly giving it to a stranger who could die or pass it along to their loved one who could die. It’s mind blowing to me that so many people can’t look beyond themselves and see how their actions could and do affect the entire community.
Yes because the US doesn't have that issue. There are countries doing far better than us that don't fall into the "authoritarian" category like we do.
We need to find a word that’s not “afraid” that disarms this boogeyman and doesn’t allow selfish people to behave the way they are. They use the word fear to mean in a selfish way, not a selfless one.
Yes because the right understand how to craft a message that infects stupid people's brains. They want to push herd immunity without saying it.
I phrase it that I’m strong enough to wear a mask for other people. I’m strong enough to live under the weight of the restrictions on me and my family because it’s for the betterment of everyone. Meanwhile all these trumpers walking around with their weak chins showing, who like to pretend it’s them being strong, defying authority, when it’s obvious to everyone else they’ve succumbed to their weakness and weren’t strong enough to carry the mental burden.
I wouldn't give a shit what someone who says you're living in fear or the like and won't wear a mask. Those people are likely too far gone to be reasoned with
I never expected to be as interested in a Bill Gates and Rashida Jones podcast, but here we are. It’s actually really good. Rashida does an awesome job of bringing it down to the level an average American can understand. It’s also interesting to hear from Fauci and Gates on this.
What about those who do wear a mask but also complain about the media causing too much fear? There is a subset of people not lost but who succumb to the messaging of fear and that the media is causing fear who are somewhere in the middle
I have a Susan Collinsesque level of concern of contracting it because I’m worried of my health. I’m worried for family contracting it and dying due to health risks. That said, we’re adults and we’ve discussed the risks and how to avoid them. We know about grocery delivery and not dining at restaurants. Boredom and covid fatigue are real, but that doesn’t give the ability or right to make dumb decisions.
Well if they're wearing a mask then that seems like a win. Idk I just have very little patience for fighting with these people at this point
Second part brought up something kinda cool I wanted to share. My buddy and his 8 month pregnant wife just got covid and are fine now. The cool part is their doctor said her breast milk will have the antibodies so their child should be safe.
I use the term “personal responsibility” when talking with non-mask wearing assholes, because it’s a good Rep talking point. I also like Biden’s “patriotism” angle.
SIAP According to worldometer yesterday was most deaths since May 15 (there is one random day in there, July 30, with more deaths but that looks like it was probably some kind of data dump) Fuck, hard to see how we don't hit May levels again and probably fly past them.
I like to frame it as weakness because it’s what these people are afraid of being seen as. 70 years ago American men were storming the beaches of Normandy in 50 pounds of gear, with mortar exploding around them and bullets flying at them and now Johnny Hardo is too weak to wear a cloth mask to the grocery store and avoid crowds of more than 10.
Yep, people immediately started to treat this like the aftermath of 9/11, the virus wins if we live in fear!
Quite a few. We should put a poll at the top of the thread to keep track. And people can change their votes should their circumstances change.
In the same boat. My sil and nephew were both sick last week and didn’t get tested or anything. Said they just had a cold all the while still going to work and taking him to moms day out. I can’t articulate how livid I am and my brothers reply is “they were just sick no big deal”. We are still being questioned of why we won’t come in for Christmas with our child. It’s absolutely horrifying to see people not give a shit about their family and friends to the point of endangering them. They didn’t tell my parents that they were sick so they went up last week to babysit so my sil could get out of the house and run errands so now I’m having to try and get my parents to go get tested before they have people over at their house for thanksgiving.
The only reason we found out is my sil slipped up and said her and my nephew were sick all last week to my wife.
We'd be a lot better off if the deniers would have a little more fear/respect for the danger that covid poses. If you don't care about yourself, think about what it might do to a health-challenged person in your life. We're just not capable of doing that as a nation.
The whole framing is dumb as fuck. It's ok to be scared of getting a possibly life threatening virus. I have zero fucking patience for these fucking hardos
AAaaand government just announced the lockdown’s prolonged until mid-december at least. Merry fucking Christmas.
They’re not even anti maskers or this is all a hoax or anything either. They honestly just live in this world where there is no way that they or anyone else can get it even though her mom is a nurse. I can’t wrap my head around it.
Looking at this graph I'd be curious to know more about what Belgium did. Huge growth through October followed up with a steep decline in the first 2 weeks of November.
