True, but I'm sure early 20th century Germans could also point to various reasons as to why a fascist dictator would never overtake their great nation and declare war on... everyone.
This is making me laugh thinking of Trump putting on a production with a slide deck with a big question mark and "guess what I'm pardoning X for" and the audience shouts out answers. Then with each new pardoned crime reveal, many of them completely unknown up to this point, the audience ah's and slaps their foreheads and a few jubilant fist pumps for those that guessed correct.
I almost said there was no great national embarrassment like the Weimar years in Germany to build this coalition to rebuild national pride Apparently I had forgotten we had the audacity to elect a black man President
Germany had been humiliated in a World War and was in the middle of The Great Depression when Hitler came to power. The US is filled with lazy nitwits who don’t even acknowledge the Covid downturn because it hurts their feelings.
Call me crazy but I'd be quite surprised if a modern coup took a form that resembles the events of 90 years ago. Different times, different problems. I'll say it again, I don't think he will succeed. But its a dangerous game to keep saying "it can't happen" because when it does happen there are usually lots of people in disbelief. Optimism and an expectation of normalcy is a fairly common personality trait which allows people to pull off crazy shit in plane sight. For example... Hitler taking the Rhineland and Europe being like "lol good one, but he knows he's not supposed to do that, he will stop there!'
Dude, we get it. I’m really starting to bothsides this in that I think the “lol, it’s not happening” and the “holy fuck they’re going to take over and it’s inevitable” people are both driving me nuts. between the sky is falling and the nothing to see here peeps I kind of want civil war declared on both.
it's hilarious to watch olds try to talk shit on the internet to people who don't know what it's like to not have a computer in the house
Another thing, as Blu Tang Clan said, we are a nation of lazy nitwits. Its a bit presumptuous to think that this group is entirely the would be coup'ers and the other side is all vigilant patriots. So much of the population is disengaged.
Idk if you noticed but we are in unprecedented times, the president is openly attempting a coup. Not really gonna put my head down and sit in the back of the class (message board). I dont think people need to start preparing for war or buying all the baked beans at the local grocery store. But I'm not going to minimize what is being attempted because life would be much nicer if it wasn't happening.
My thoughts are that Trump power watched House of Cards and is trying to pull a Frank Underwood. I also think when push comes to shove Republicans as a whole aren’t going to go completely all-in on behalf of this dipshit. But I also think they’re taking notes on all this for a future play with a more competent head of state.
Sometimes we forget that we’re talking about a political party that just stole an election 20 years ago
When you open your post like this I’m not going to take you seriously. I’ve been participating in Trump threads for years. I don’t like that it’s happening but I also don’t think posting “FIRE!!” every 10 minutes is particularly useful. I mean, maybe you should take a few days off from thread just to settle. I had to do it a few months back (went away for a week) and it helped me get my composure back. What’s happening is not good. But it’s also nowhere on the way to being successful at the moment.
I won't be a dick and link various definitions of Coup or Coup d'etat but yeah I'm not going to feel bad about reminding people that the president is actively trying to pull one off. Its not nice or fun to think about but its reality.
Do you really think people in this thread don’t know what a coup is? Or that we don’t see what’s happening? Stop being a prick. We realize what’s going on and, while it’s shitty, it’s completely in character and on-brand for a malignant narcissist in power. This was always going to be his play. I’m honestly surprised anyone is startled by this. He’s going to continue to throw shit against the wall until Jan. 20. I hate it, but that’s what people with his personality disorder do.
if trump was a competent authoritarian then he wouldn’t have gotten absolutely blown out in the election. He has loads of enablers - many are doing it for show and lots are just as nuts as he is, but nothing will come of it and he’ll be gone in two months
Yes, I’m more worried about him writing a playbook for a competent authoritarian then him being able to pull it off.
I agree. But Germany was humiliated not in the war, but in the terms France insisted be applied. Ironically enough, Wilson was fighting those sanctions like crazy (and full of hubris, Wilson was in complete control of the negotiations in Paris 1919) then he caught the Spanish Flu most likely. He got real damn sick, sort of recovered enough to talk again, threw in the towel on his objections to the hard peace terms to get home. History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.
I just don’t know if we’ll ever see a cult of personality like this again - or at least not in the short term
I know you know what it means, which is why its kind of ridiculous you are accusing me of being inflammatory for calling a coup attempt what it is. Expected it, of course, he essentially told the nation he was going to do it multiple times. That doesn't make it more palatable. He's not the type that goes away when ignored, he starts lighting shit on fire so people have to pay attention. None of us are in a position do anything about what he is doing, its frustrating. We voted, but thats being ignored. I'm frustrated that political leaders on both sides are just kinda hoping the side show burns itself out. Apologies if this is annoying.
That’s why I advised taking a few days off. It really does help. As for the voting, it’s not being ignored by the people who are in charge of it.
Its being ignored by the person in the most powerful governmental position in the world. This likely isn't going to matter because the processes are playing out, but hey if there is anything worth being upset about I think this qualifies.
I mean, the MI speaker and senate leader are flying to DC tomorrow to meet with Trump. So, it's not like it's just Rudy shitting himself every day. Bart Gellman (The Atlantic) was on MSNBC earlier, and he said that he wished he could convince himself that overturning the election is impossible.
This is some fucked up shit that we are experiencing. Saying it won’t work because “reasons” is some next level shit. It might not work but it will be because people start taking it serious. Trump isn’t doing this for revenge like CNN keeps trying to tell me. He is doing it out of fear and for power. He will do anything he can to remain in power. People need to start doing everything they can to fight back.
It feels like the vast majority of influential ppl are just sitting there watching it happen. Might be time to speak up.
