They both provide insurance for each other. Morton is 37, Smyly has some injury concerns, but for $26M you're penciling in ~225-250 IP of mid-rotation quality pitching to go along with your studs at the top. Also you've now provided some cover in case Soroka takes longer to come back, and some freedom to deploy Smyly as a multi-inning opener type of weapon.
But hear me out, maybe spend $26mm on someone who is better than a middle of the rotation starter and could maybe be a vet top of the rotation guy vs spending all our capital on #4/5 starters
I’m nervous about what kind of terrible bullshit we’d get back in a trade. I’d rather just release him.
Who is that though? In this class it's basically just Bauer and who the heck knows what kind of contract he wants. You could trade for some guys (Lynn, Gray) but that costs prospects, and I'd rather just spend cash.
you keep saying this despite there being no evidence it is true and in fact evidence that its actually false
Per Spotrac, we have 39 on our 40 man after Morton with the currently projected salary around $116M after arbitration. We likely will have 3-4 non tenders which will put us around $110M and around 35-36 on our 40. Interesting to see where the payroll ends up and how we fill our needs.
I mean, do you even liberty media? We aren't spending any more on the rotation, or at least I hope we aren't. So IDK how you can't agree we've spent all our capital available for Starters
because you’re assuming we are done spending when there really is no indication that’s true AA is dumb but he isn’t dumb enough to just burn through his entire budget on these two. cmon man think a little bit
I feel like we went through this same song and dance last year after we signed Smith then we spent over $50 mil on TDA, Hamels, Martin and Bug Bear
if they are serious about moving him, we should absolutely go for it. even if it’s just a rental and we can’t afford an extension. especially if we bring back bug. AA will eventually have to make a big trade. only a matter of time
this makes your complaints even more bizarre then considering you acknowledge we have more money to spend even after we just made a big improvement to multiple spots of our rotation you've lost the plot
I'm more for bigger singular improvements vs marginal backend rotational guys, which you yourself have called them
no i havent. you have. just because charlie is going to be our #3/4 doesnt mean hes a marginal, backend rotational guy. it just means our top 3 are really really good too you're complaining just to complain which again is a consequence of a continuing to allow ale to pollute this thread
I'm kind of coming around. Why pay 15,000,000 for Melton when we could have Tommy Milne for a couple hundred dollars.
ian's success and aj's great start has somehow made stuhly forget that we ran out of pitching in the NLCS
You've called them back end of the rotation guys, which is what I was eluding to. Yes, I think our top 3 guys are really good, but all young. I'd just prefer a vet as #2 for ~26mm vs replacing more talented younger guys in from the 5th role. All 1 year deals which we're back in the same spot as next year
We also had no off days due to manfried awful scheduling. We ran out b/c we lost our top starting pitcher. We'll get him back and I'm arguing to add another so we have a legit starting 4, then whatever youth turns on
You keep talking about this mythical top of the rotation vet. Are you saying Bauer or bust? He's the only guy out there that fits your description.
i would rather we have the two we have than him for $40m or whatever absurd one year deal he’s gonna get. he was good last year but that isn’t who he’s been at all in his career so it’s a bit risky
probably missed out boat last year on getting good SP vs wasting money on Cole. I'd be in it for Bauer for a year vs these two bums
The only guy not named Bauer who’s on the market and close to a #2 is Charlie Morton but because he’s 37 stuhly had to fill his diaper
he was simply really good in the playoffs last year instead of being 2014 madbum good in the playoffs
Yeah, if he's what he was in a small sample size this past season, he has a chance to be a hell of a #5.
while we wait on the DH decision for marcy, we should look at bringing MM back. no idea what his market is like but maybe 2yr/$12m or something gets it done would like shane back too but i know opinions on him are varied
A lot depends on what the Braves think they'll get from Will Smith going forward. If they don't trust him, need at least one of MM or Shane back if not both.
That's my feelings on it, but put way better. One of them should work out pretty well...not completely sure on which one. Or maybe both, but at different points in the season. Smyly in a vacuum I thought was an overpay, but I feel a lot better about this combination.
Bullpen is in pretty good shape regardless Martin Smith Matzek Jacob Webb AJ Minter Dayton Tomlin Maybe: Sobotka, Weigel, Ynoa, Touki, Newk, Puke
