I'm guessing it's full of country club brats and golfclubatlas wannabes but I've only ever read the formula 1 thread over there a time or two.
I’m not fully aware of all the issues, but from what I gathered a big issue was having threads dedicated to hating people/things within golf and some posters were taking it on themselves to gang up and trash the subjects’ social media; specifically, there’s a huge thread about EAL and people were getting support to go instigate on his pages. The fact that you can search for EAL and come across that thread then negatively reflects on NLU since their name is at the top of the page. It also sounds like people were starting to mess with other’s personal lives and they decided they want to end the chances of that spiraling further
Serious mob mentality and wild momentum swings on there. The Buck Club thread being the best example. Zac Blair used to be The Refuge poster child and now they (Refugees, not the NLU guys) hate him.
Awaiting confirmation from my contacts but looks like December 9th will see Jigga vs Ty Webb 36 holes on the island of Palm Beach. 18 holes at The Breakers Ocean course and 18 at Palm Beach Par 3. Going US am style 36 hole match play. Place your bets
I believe the vitriol is from his The Buck Club starting as a self funded course that was going to be in Utah and he took money for that plan and then decided to buy land in the Carolinas to design his course and fucked over people that were “investing” in it. I may not have that 100% right but something to that effect.
It's a bummer that the message boards are so gross because I think for the most part, they do a good job staying away from that stuff in their content and is one of the reasons I'm a fan.
I felt seen when he didn't have a fucking clue about 2/3 of his bag. "Ugh I dunno." "That's why you get fitted! Exactly"
He started TBC under the guise of a fundraising arm of his future golf club (which seems to be a rip off of all things en Vogue in architecture—- which is like anything else these days) and it’s basically a merchandise selling venture that seems to toe the line of copyright infringement on a weekly basis. Will the club ever get built? Who knows. Blair seems like a nice guy with an eye for some cool designs. Seems like if he just played it as a merch selling venture he wouldn’t get near the shit he’s getting.
That was mostly a joke. But I did find his to be the least interesting...probably because he is so laissez faire about everything.
Tron’s schtick is wonderful and his tales are generally spot on. He has good judgment with it though. Unfortunately though, a lot of message boarders without his judgement try to copy his schtick...and it leads to The Refuge becoming hot take central.
He owns the land for it and is constantly posting clips of him out there working on small pieces of it, although that’ll fade with him about to have shoulder surgery. He also split with King Collins who was originally supposed to do the work so not sure what’s up on that front either
Soly is really good at what he does when it comes to the podcast. He's a good interviewer and has the voice to go along with it. Surprising considering he is a Miami Phi Psi accounting bro that has no training in broadcasting or journalism. He is a little cringe worthy when it comes to the live video stuff. (Not the interview segments of videos, he's fine there) I don't exactly fault him for that, I don't exactly want to put my life up on YouTube for everyone to see, not everyone is going to be natural at that.
Yeah I know. It’s near where I grew up, so I really hope he can make it happen. but there is a loooong way to go to get the build paid for. That’s going to be a much different animal than purchasing the dirt.
Completely agree on both parts; owning the land is still a long ways from building a functioning golf club, and if the decision was made by KC to back out that’s mildly concerning, but they’re also busy with other projects that are actually funded so it makes sense from a business perspective
I just turned it on. Chuck had a surprisingly nice putt off the green to get it within 2 feet. Seems like Phil’s brain is the biggest advantage
