No. No. no. this is bad. Banishing them from the large popular sites scatters them and makes them less effective at recruiting. Leaving them on Facebook and Twitter validates them to normies. They needs to go.
That’s a valid point. I fear plots like the Michigan Governor kidnapping attempt could become more common in the “safe spaces” for fascists
That started on Facebook. A larger platform makes it easier to recruit people. Think about it, you're more likely to end up on a "Wolverine Watchman" page by going from innocuous Facebook memes, to conspiracy theory memes, to conspiracy groups than you are just stumbling across a sub-board on the internet. Also, it's not like their being on Twitter/Facebook prevents them from also having those un-regulated sub-boards.
Would the plan have been unraveled had it not started on a large platform? Good news is that these people are inherently stupid and usually aren’t astute enough to cover their tracks.
For years the argument is that Facebook and Twitter has harmed America and it helps radicalize people. Now all of a sudden we need to keep them on? Also if what we are seeing is them walking on eggshells then I don’t want to see them go nuts.
Yes, it would have been unraveled. But, more importantly, it would be far less likely to have even been hatched.
I’m not downplaying how awful Facebook has been in the radicalization process. Just acknowledging that it is a positive for intelligence agencies to be able to sift through Facebook for information about domestic terrorist plots and the like.
Pandora’s Box has already been opened. We can’t go back in time where these like minded people won’t be able to find each other.
These specific people? Maybe not. But we can make it a lot harder for them to keep radicalizing new people.
I wish I were as optimistic as you. People’s (especially those of lower intelligence) opportunity to communicate with one another is something new to human history.
Sure, but the point is that it's harder for them to find each other when they're across multiple, disconnected platforms. Those platforms exist in addition to and outside of Facebook/Twitter. Facebook/Twitter just make it easier for them to recruit.
Most intelligence agencies do not have authority to investigate domestic terrorism, and those that do are highly restricted in their ability to conduct investigations via social media through the Fourth Amendment.
Something would need to be done with Reddit, YouTube, whatever Chan still exists. Maybe even Evangelical megachurches.
Social media has been an absolute goldmine for extremist groups. in the past, if you wanted to be an extremist you had to meet up with the weird dude from the gun club at his trailer and the best materials he had were badly xeroxed copies of the turner diaries. Now clicking the wrong joe rogan podcast link will fill your youtube algorithm with expertly produced media designed to keep you angry and keep you watching.
How do these groups organize and plot attacks once they find each other? What internet/technology platforms do they use beyond FB?
The FBI has been monitoring white supremacist groups for quite some time. Not with great results. (Ruby Ridge radicalizing Timothy McVeigh)
thanks for the info, but that’s not responsive to the particular challenges that social media and encrypted communications play in law enforcement investigations. The best solution is almost always deplatforming.
Honestly they can flip a coin and should hang one of he and loeffler just to make an example of corruption.
Facebook has led to multiple genocides around the world. They are a huge fucking problem for feeding these radical groups and allowing them to recruit new members.
Probably a 1 for impact and a 20 for a miserable 4q, since finding someone more radical than barr leaves you with rudy or kraken lady
so iirc it’s a bit more complicated than that One, it’s owned by the city. And two it was built in Orange County because they used taxes from the hospitality industry (universal/Disney) in order to finance it. At least that’s what I remember but it’s been awhile. There was a big fight about where to build it bc the hospitality industry wanted it by the convention center since it was using their money.
maybe if everyone had the tools and basic historical knowledge to see what the game is, but the vast majority of people in this country don't. they listen to joe rogan interview milo yiannopoulos or jordan peterson once and come away thinking "wow, these guys make good points. maybe feminists actually are nazis."
Being in "Gifted & Talented" programs throughout my schooling did a huge disservice on my perception of the realities of average human intelligence. I don't care if I sound elitist. Maybe I would have learned how dumb people were earlier had it not been for talking about sports.
You're amongst the unwashed masses so I take that as a compliment. Spoiler I have no qualms with you sir. Except I think The Great Gatsby is a smidge overrated.
