I think 5-6 is most likely if we lose out which we should. If things fall right we could get 4 but not likely. Let’s not fuck this up and win a game.
Mike Sando today wrote about Stafford destinations and threw this out there, for those wondering about possible return in trades: The Bengals traded Palmer to the Raiders for a first-round pick and a second-rounder that could have upgraded to a first. An exec for a team with an established quarterback said he thought Detroit should accept no less than a first-rounder for Stafford. This exec and others thought Stafford would most likely remain in Detroit. Would the quarterback pull a Palmer and ask out?
Honestly who gives a shit about draft capital when the new GM is going to waste the fuck out of it anyway.
They had 3 players that are now current starting TEs (Darren Fells, Robert Tonyan and Logan Thomas) all in camp at some point between releasing Ebron and drafting Hockenson
Hockenson is top a top 3-5 TE in most statistical categories this year in an offense that generally has not been very TE friendly. I wish we would have taken someone else, but most of the guys taken after him haven't been much better and he's the least of our problems from the 19 draft.
1. Patricia 2. Odukuh 3. Hock 4, Tabor 5. Tavai 6. Davis 7. Not caring about pass rush (really should be 2 but too lazy to change) 8. Glasgow/Vaitai 9. Slay 10. Diggs?
Being a top 3-5 TE this year doesn't mean much. Not saying he won't eventually get there but being anything less than a Kelce/Kittle type player and it's a bad pick. Mostly because that defense was so bad. The two names most mentioned, Bush and Burns, would have had so much more impact on the team (Bush's injury aside).
Really? Yikes for the league? It helps that Kittle and Ertz have been hurt and Herbert doesn't use his TE very well, I guess. I'm glad he's useful.
So Hockenson is on pace for 65 catches for 770 yards and 7 TDs. That's basically prime Pettigrew, who averaged 77 catches for 750 yards and 4.5 TDs his best seasons in 2010 and 2011 before injuries decimated him. Calvin was taking redzone targets so his TDs were low. The 50th best fantasy season for a TE since 1997 is Jordan Cameron in 2013 with 80 catches, 917 yards and 7 TDs.
Tony Pauline, a pretty solid NFL draft guy, just said on his live Podcast that the Lions are rumored to be looking at hiring a coach before a GM and the belief is Saleh is the guy. This is what the Bills did with McDermott. He said he’s heard Adam Peters from the Niners is a guy that the Lions will look at as GM.
The good news with Saleh is that the Niners aren’t likely headed to the playoffs, so a hire could happen within days of the season ending.
Saleh was also in Seattle with Ed Dobbs, Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer, all of whom are potential GM candidates.
Saleh is really the perfect guy for this job. Plus being from Detroit, he knows what kind of shit sandwich he’s going eat if he comes here. That is a plus for our shitty franchise. I am not going to get my hopes up, but I do think in this case getting the coach first makes a lot of sense.
Peters worked 6 years in NE (as a pro scout) before going to Denver (mostly working as a college scout/director) for 8 years. He's now in San Fran as their VP of Player Personnel since 2017.
When Ryan Day hired Jeff Hafley to be DC @ OSU, most people had zero idea who he was and there really wasn't much to go on/decent amount of doubt. The only really known person who preached that he was gonna be awesome and knows his shit was Richard Sherman.
When Michigan hired Harbaugh, everyone thought he was going to be as good as Urban. The only known person who thought he sucked was Richard Sherman. Math checks out.
Be curious if Saleh would try to bring Kris Kocurek back to Detroit with him. He was damn good during his tenure here
For anybody who didn't know the history of Pats assistants hired to be a head coach. Then he gained 300 lbs and everybody knew he sucked.
Only concern about Saleh is that it’s another DC with no experience. NFL is all offense these days. I have no idea what we will do, but we don’t need another HC that thinks we need the offense to just be manageable/not make mistakes and the defense will do the rest
Definitely could be a concern, but there have also been a lot of defensive minded HC who have good offenses. It's always a bit of Russian Roulette when you're hiring assistants as to how they approach stuff. The main concern I have if they went the route of hiring a coach first is that would mean Sheila Ford and Rod Wood are hiring two people instead of one. I think there's better odds of them listening to 4-5 pitches from GM candidates and picking the person with the best/favorite model for how to run their football operation, as opposed to interviewing HC candidates with no football people in the room and finding the best one. That's actually the last thing I want them doing. And the idea that they might already be locking in on Saleh (or anyone, really) before talking to people would be scary even though I really like Saleh and hope he gets the job.
Saw an article from one of the Denver beat writers saying they should offer up Lock and a 1st for Stafford. Kind of makes senses for both sides. But Bevell is already talking about opening the offense up and letting Stafford sling it for the rest of the season. So could just as easily be that Stafford puts up big numbers over the remaining games and is going nowhere.
Let him put up numbers and boost his value. I'm more concerned about him getting hurt, though. Denver makes the most sense for him. Sando at The Athletic mentioned the Colts, 9ers, Browns (I didn't get that one), Pats and Saints. I don't think any of those teams make much of a push there for him, but Denver with a defense that's ready to win and all those young WRs makes a ton of sense.
Were going to end up trading him to the Patriots for a conditional 7th after we agree to eat the contract
Weaver would trade Stafford and 3 2s to the pats for a conditional 7 but only if they let him stretch the Stafford money over 5 years
Since this roster needs to be rebuilt, we probably need to move on from Golladay, right? Love the guy, but he’s already 27. Not sure what the point is in keeping him around, other than it obviously creates a massive hole on the roster. Gotta’ keep Ragnow though.
I think they have to figure out a way to franchise Golladay, and if they can get something decent for him they should maybe do that. But this isn't the NBA or MLB. Whoever comes in here isn't going to be on the Avila or even Yzerman rebuild plans of not trying for 5 years. 27 isn't close to old enough to be cool with letting him walk for nothing.
Find a way to keep Golladay or trade him for assets. Give him a 5 year deal that's really a 3 year deal and you don't have to worry about WR1 for a bit.
If you're going to move on from Stafford and get a rookie QB, im all for keeping talented skill guys around to help him out. And without Stafford contract its not like cap will be an issue
I hope they can get something for him, but I’m thinking he’s gone. Then, they’ll spend the money on Will Fuller and Corey Davis and I’ll kill myself.
The issue is if Golladay is franchised, he can’t be traded. And if he still doesn’t sign a deal, do you want to franchise him a second time? If you can get him on a good deal, I have no issue bringing him back. If he decides to play the franchise out, all bets are off.
