Been fucking with this lately & fine tuning the recipe 6.5/1 ratio 13/40 grind Preheat water, med-low stovetop Aeropress filter used
Just picked up this OXO electrical grinder for my morning pour overs. Got a great deal at $55. My first entry into the world of electric grinders. Had been pondering a Baratza, but couldn't pass up this price. My first grind was definitely too fine. Also, I measured 22g and it seems like only 18g came out. I thought all the beans were ground? I didn't want to keep it running if there were no beans. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/st...urr-coffee-grinder-in-stainless-steel/5250992
First grinder I ever bought as well. Been great for me as a beginner. And I think I paid a bit more 1 year ago so that’s a good purchase.
You'll always lose some, but 4g of retention is high. When I had an electric, I had to pick it up, angle it down a bit, and slap the back to get it all out. You also don't want those old grounds mixing into your next brew.
You get what you pay for at times but there are quite a few commercial type grinders that retain a lot as well (looking at you mazzer). Just run the grinder for a few more seconds. Keep cleaning the grinder regularly though - coz the last thing you want is old grinds building up and affecting your coffee.
I’ve cycled from auto drip machines to my Chemex pour over and now nespresso pods for a couple years I’m thinking of a higher end espresso machine that does everything for espresso only. I like my frother if I make cappuccino. (Machine will grind, tamp etc. ) any Black Friday deals?? Thoughts?
I’m in the same boat. Thought I had it down to between the delonnghi la specialista and breville barista express. You can read reviews and comments on every type of coffee equipment til you’re blue in the face and still be no better off then when you started. I’m crippled by consumer report fear.
I’ve decided on the breville. I see no sales at this point but slickdeals shows great sales in recent past. So I added a deal alert and will wait.
Look at Rancilio Silva with a PID. They're Rock solid and better than Breville barista express. Also save up a bit and buy a dedicated grinder in any case. The grinder on Breville barista express sucks ass. If you want to go with Breville, go with infuser (I had it for 2 plus years, pretty solid starting out) - it's cheaper than express and the same machine, minus the grinder. And I can't mention it enough, never get anything with a built in grinder. It may sound convenient but You'll have regrets pretty early on.
I liked the la specialista because it had a built in grinder and tamper. I may make my own coffee every morning, but I’m still lazy at heart.
Check Breville's site for refurbished machines as well. I think the warranty is the same as new ones.
IMO, look at Lelit Anna (with PID) at 1st line equipment, Crossland CC1 and Rancilio Silvia before you take the plunge.
these are much more custom built looking. Not a polished design. Not a bad thing but interesting. I see the rancilio doesn’t have a pressure gage which I believe is a miss. The crossland was listed as discontinued. im assuming I can at least start with my conical burr grinder and scoop it into the basket without the fancy doser style. More to learn ...
The Lelits or Rancilio will last you a decade and you can repair them at home if you get the parts. Breville is a luck of the draw and while you get a polished look, they’re not built to last and if you have issues, you have to send it to breville for repairs plus you’re on hook for the shipping iirc.
Looking for advice. I want to move up from a standard drip coffee maker and my Nespresso tastes burnt the majority of the time. Not really interested in the pour overs as taking time to accurately measure and pour is not possible in the morning with my two little ones going crazy. What would be good entry level options?
If you mean a better drip maker, get something that is SCAA certified. I have a bonavita, but there are several options. If you mean a less fussy manual, I'd go clever dripper or aeropress (former outperforms the latter imo)
I've watched youtube. Definitely different machines. Traditional have boilers, Breville uses heat on demand. Steam not as strong but much faster. Lots of complaints on the Rancho temperature control as it doesn't have PID. But no one seems to love the Lelits. More research needed.
well my budget may have blown up. A rancilio plus pid (look up coffeeme) with grinder is like $1100. Damn
My next upgrade maybe a Lelit Bianca imo look at places like home-barista or reddit coffee swap - used Rancilios are not a bad option. Even a gaggia classic with pid
Thanks for the help coffee cunts and specifically Jorts who texted me. Local coffee shop carried the Encore and I picked one up this morning. Now if I could “accidentally” knock my espresso machine off the counter so I can get a new one. And no judgement, that is my wife’s hot cocoa maker to the left.
Also, should I get a lidded canister to store my grind in? If so room temp or in frig? As well as opened but unused beans, room temp or frig after resealing bag?
Breville units on sale. I have express on order but considering infuser and a grinder. Recs on a reasonable grinder that’s better than that built in unit? Heard rocky also has issues.
Hopefully you mean beans and not ground, but any vacuum cannister will do. Don't store beans in the fridge (humidity issues)... Room temp unless you're not going to use them for several weeks, and then freezer in a mason jar (although there is fierce debate amongst coffeeheads on this topic) Cultivar
if that was not possible because you have a baby sleeping, what method would you use to store if absolutely had to?
Live 2 miles from Cultivar, I am spoiled. And unfortunately, I did mean grinds. My morning espresso time is while baby is sleeping and I am not going to wake him for it. Until his sleeping pattern changes, I need to store some. It is not that huge of a deal considering I am accustomed to Cultivar grinding a whole bag for me at one time and then I use it until it is gone.
I would probably grind in the garage or a closet, but I'm not a sane person. In your case, I'd do a vacuum sealed container at room temp
Are you leaving the house for several hours immediately after the brew? If so, the newly awakened and crying baby is someone else’s problem imo. You must be ruthless in pursuit of the perfect cup.
I was just checking. I appears I need to spend as much on a grinder ??? Rocky or vario? then I’m at $900 vs $600 for express
I wouldn't buy a rocky. If you're just looking for espresso, I'd look at Sette 270 (or get Sette 30 and replace the burrs)
I also saw rocky was only ok. Sette 270 is $400. Express for $600 or infuser and sette 270 for $900 will I really notice that
Refurbished Sette 30 - https://www.baratza.com/shop/sette30-refurb Sette 270 assembly - https://www.baratza.com/shop/sette-270-270w-adjustment-assembly 285$ for a more than solid espresso grinder. The great thing about Baratza is their solid customer service and the fact that you can pretty much order any or every part of the grinder and fix/replace it yourself.
Can anyone ITT direct me towards some good dark roast coffee grounds that are independently owned? Want to put a sampler pack together for my sister for Christmas, but I don't drink or know anything about coffee. She's a 4 shots of espresso type when she goes to Starbucks if that helps at all.
You want preground for espresso for her to use with her at home machine, then? And do you want full size bags or something smaller?
Yes to preground. All I know is she likes strong/dark roast coffee. Thought it would be nice to get her something she's never had before. I don't buy coffee so I don't know what a full sized bag is.
This is my go-to roaster. They have several espresso roasts and can grind for aeropress or moka. If she has a coffeemaker and not an espresso machine, I'd just go with a different dark roast they sell and have it ground for drip brew size https://happymugcoffee.com/collections/roasted-coffee
