Most CFB and CBB coaches have successfully convinced all these genius college administrators that it's impossible to recruit unless they enter each season with at least 4 years left on the deal. Jim coming into this season with only 2 years left was worth the first Thamel article before the season because of that.
I don't know what's going to happen. Chatter has definitely picked up over the last 48 hours or so that he's going to get an extension. What I do know is that, whatever does happen, it won't be broken by Rob Parker or Mike Florio. Rob Parker's "moles" are other Michigan writers on the internet saying they think he's getting an extension. And Florio is a moron.
Been a long time since I heard the name Rob Parker. Dude fucking sucks. I wonder if his moles still believe Kirk Cousins was the ringleader of the Rather Hall brawl
I was never a big Deadspin guy, but it's bizarre to see that Rob Parker writing for that brand now, even if it's nothing like the original.
Justification would be... - COVID season basically doesn't count - "We don't want to fire him", and they can't just bring him back with 1 year left on the deal I don't agree with that justification. I think the COVID season has led to this getting worse than it would have been otherwise, but I think all the negativity/noise before this season means Harbaugh doesn't get to brush this to the side the way other coaches whose teams have disappointed will be able to. But that's the justification the AD will use if it happens.
i am bringing up Nd again for nothing but your ad and harbaugh should look at what kelly/Nd did after 2016. It was a complete 180 degree without changing the head coach. They both agreed that kelly needed to change his program, he took a step back and became more of head coach instead of micro managing. But harbaugh seems like such a weird guy, not sure he could be a ceo type of coach
yeah, he wanted to call the plays for a long while and forgot to do what a head coach should be doing
you could theoretically extend with adding little to no new money from a buyout perspective. So basically a fake extension for recruiting purposes or you make the buyout low at least. I don’t get the sense that this is the case for Michigan though. If harbaugh wants a big extension, tell him to go to the NFL then.
I just can’t wrap my head around bringing back harbaugh. He’s done nothing and now in year 6 he has lost the team. At least Franklin has had some success at penn state. Michigan has a rare chance to move on from a struggling, highly paid coach for a low buyout and is afraid to do it.
Despite being one of the richest ads and schools in the country, Michigan is cheap cheap. This is the same school that lost basketball coaches to Iowa state and Arizona state over money and has never paid a major buyout to hire a coach(rrod and beilein had to pay their wvu buyouts out of their um salary.
I guess it's almost easier for donors/administrators to just social promote a coach from one year to the next. Fans' butts will be in the stands in September, so who cares.
You don't think your program is a cautionary tale for that mentality? Michigan went 46-42 (24-32 in the B1G) the seven years before Harbaugh got to UM. Harbaugh went 47-18 (32-12 in the B1G) his first five years here. When your program bottoms out, the reaction to 9-4/10-3 most years isn't as bad.
not at all. I doubt we switch coaches if we knew about covid but you can’t stay with a coach when you know he won’t get it done. Coaching hires are a crapshoot outside the meyer/Sabans of the world. Once you know it won’t work, you move on. Especially when the buyout is low. Michigan gives him a new contract and they fail again next season and you’re now on the hook for a much bigger buyout or another season of mediocrity or worse.
I think Michigan should move on from Harbaugh. That's what I would do. I'm simply saying that when you say things like "once you know it won't work...," that means something different when you're coming off what Harbaugh inherited than it may have in 2006. If FSU ever gets back to going 10-3/9-4 again consistently, you'll look at those seasons differently than you did when Jimbo was going 10-3 at the end. Harbaugh is a coach with a very good history pre-Michigan, had Michigan to be in position for B1G titles before losses to OSU in three of his first five seasons, and turned around an awful program when he got here. He's also one of the best QBs in program history and someone they want to succeed. From an administrative standpoint, it's not hard to understand why at least some people would be trying to salvage this in the hopes that it can still work. Especially when you see the downside of a hire going wrong at a place like Michigan or Florida State.
I'm agreeing with you. It was embarrassing how they refused to take advantage of that BTN money back in 1980 when they let Johnny Orr walk. I remember it like it was yesterday.
sure it could get worse. Would matt Campbell accept the Michigan job? If the answer is yes, then they need to make a change. If the answer is no and they don’t feel comfortable with any other options, I could see the argument to keep him even if I disagree with it. Matt Campbell just seems like such a good fit for one of the bigger big 10 schools and if someone else ends up with him, and Michigan gets a shitty coach when they fire harbaugh in 1 or 2 seasons, they will regret it.
I like Matt Campbell. I think he's a really good coach and could be a really good coach at Michigan. I don't think he's anywhere close to a lock to do better than Harbaugh did in his first 5 years, or better than Harbaugh moving forward. Only difference is that Matt Campbell would get a lot more love/credit for going 10-3 than Harbaugh did because everyone loves him.
