Isn't the kiss of death in these instances when the AD/GM/owner says the coach is safe? This is just Harbaugh saying "I don't want to be fired."
I think you're confusing "kiss of death" with "dream scenario" for Jim's boss. That would mean he didn't have to fire him or pay his buyout in a pandemic.
I get this idea, but Michigan is trending towards that dreaded 7-5, 6-6 program than continuing on a 10-2, 9-3 one. And let's be honest, Michigan's success is tied to its ability to compete with OSU, not finish in the top 5 of the B1G. I know you want Harbaugh gone, but Brady Hoke started off well too and look how that ended. I think the main issue is offensively, UM has been mediocre for years. They have zero identity. I dont know enough about the staff internally so I don't know the answer. They should recruit well enough to play a power football brand and take pressure off their QB, but they just don't. Its actually weird.
It's trending towards that now. It wasn't necessarily trending that way before this season. If the question is "why would UM keep Harbaugh?", the reason is the AD didn't think he'd be in this situation and has to come to grips with the reality of where this thing has gone in the last 13 months. Hoke had one good year in 2011 in an awful B1G. Harbaugh walked into OSU/MSU at or close to their peak with UM at rock bottom as a program/brand and went 10-3 in three of his first four years. Harbaugh's tenure is seemingly going to end the same way Hoke's did and it will ultimately be a disappointment based on expectations, but the similarities kind of stop there.
3rd assistant um is going have to pay millions of dollars to buyout under Harbaugh. I still don't think brown was the issue, his staff full of shitty recruiters was.
that is one hell of a scapegoating on Brown. carries the program on his back with elite defenses for four years in a row, has one bad year, and gets canned for it.
I believe PSU safeties coach Tim Banks would be fine fit for Michigan. Coached up Jaquan Brisker to be a PFF first team All American.
The bloom fell off the rose at the end of 2018 when Michigan gave up 62 to Ohio State and 41 to Florida to close the year. He has been treading water ever since.
I wonder whether Day picks him up as an analyst, like the Saban model for rehabilitation of prominent coaches who you don’t actually want to put on staff. Day coached with him at BC for two years (along with Al Washington). I could see Hafley taking a flyer at BC as well.
I mean, if getting destroyed by OSU and being embarrassed in bowls is what got him canned shouldn't Harbaugh be gone?
this is driving your 1991 Kia Sephia down one of those cliche movie highways with all the barricades leading up to the unfinished road over a chasm and then stopping on the way but only because you wanted to top off your tank.
A whole lot of relief in Ann Arbor to know that Harbaugh is locked up through 2026. Was starting to get pessimistic that he would be there much longer
I'm very confused by the tactics of both Michigan and Harbaugh at this point. COVID has kept the normal coaching carousel much quieter than normal, and pretty much the entire recruiting class amazingly signed a few weeks back. I don't think the delay hurt that much yet. But the timing of all this is just really weird. Until it's announced by UM, I'm still skeptical that Jim isn't waiting to see about NFL interest before they make anything official. Him waiting for next week is the only thing that makes sense for why they would wait this long if UM was legitimately willing to do an extension.
I want him to stay for obvious reasons. I also like watching the world burn when it comes to these coaching searches.
