Write-up from Fangraphs going into last season... Baddoo has some promising physical ingredients — speed, raw power — seasoned by high walk rates. He missed most of 2019 because he needed Tommy John in mid-May. He lacks deft barrel accuracy, but Baddoo has run well above-average walk rates to this point and he may be able to get to most of his power by hunting the right pitches, even if his swing’s a little grooved. He’s tracking like a power/OBP fourth outfielder or platoon guy.
This tigers reliver guy got selected by the Mariners, 2017 12th rounder Will Vest https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=vest--000wil
Why ever spend money if there's a chance it might not work out? Sell the team and give me a real GM who isn't scared of his shadow.
Those quotes are awful to see. I’m pretty sure we are bottom 5 in payroll. spend some money Chris, or sell the fucking team. We get tons of money in TV revenue. There are plenty of guys we can be signing that won’t break the bank. And fire Avila too. What a pussy
The Hanshin Tigers have been more active than I'd like them to be, because I too have seen tweets about moves the Tigers make and get excited for a second.
No free agent power hitter should ever sign with the Tigers on a 1 year prove it deal unless they have no other options. It's too hard to hit home runs in Comerica.
Depends on the hitter. Over the years, the park factor numbers suggest Comerica is a good park to hit in.
Fuck this piece of shit. This entire article pissed me off, but this paragraph, in particular, is something else.
Just put this together in my son's playroom. He's only 3 months old, looking forward to keeping up with it with him. Every tiger 1st rd pick who has a Bowman rookie or 1st is up there. Auto version if they had one (beside Tork, his prices too high now, need market to cool)
Early look at next year's draft class. I really like this top 10 at this point but it's going to change a ton whenever these guys actually get to play. The link straight to the top 100 is here... https://www.mlb.com/prospects/2021/draft/
Yeah I saw that. Surprising Since Avila uses MLB Pipeline for his drafting, looks like we will have our choice of Lawlar or McLain.
I wonder if they have parties when these lists get announced to give them an idea who to get excited about
He apparently was awful this summer and really dropped for a lot of people (which kind of seems ridiculous to me based on COVID, but whatever). Baseball America had him ranked as the #14 HS kid going into the summer. They ranked him #61 (among HS kids, not overall) in September. Here is their write-up of him... Leto entered the 2020 showcase circuit as one of the more famous names in the 2021 class thanks to his exploits as a hitter and pitcher during his underclass career. But after not playing an inning during his high school season this spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, scouts left the field with more questions than answers about the Lousiana State commit’s draft stock. Leto has a long track record of performing but was more of a power-over-hit bat throughout the summer. He has plenty of strength and gap-to-gap power with a bit more juice to the pull-side. Defensively, Leto will have to play in a corner, with some scouts hopeful he can make third work and others convinced he’ll have to play first if he’s in the infield. His actions were much stiffer than expected this summer, which could be a product of missed game time during the spring—either way scouts are now more skeptical of his athleticism and twitchiness than they were entering the summer. Leto has turned in average run times in the 60-yard dash but is below average out of the box. There’s plenty of pressure on Leto’s bat and power now, and some scouts might prefer him on the mound, where he’s shown a low-to-mid-90s fastball and solid breaking ball.
Another HS kid that MLBpipeline is really down on after the summer compared to others is Brady House. BA has him as the clear top HS player in the draft. MLB has him #12 overall, and there seems to be some discrepancy between them and BA on how he performed this summer in showcases.
Matt McLain seems pretty old. He will be 22 in August. My top 3 right now assuming rocker is off the board would be Fabian, Lawlar or McLain. I like Leiter but thing one of those bats is more of a sure thing.
I'm most intrigued by Jaden Hill among the pitchers. Hope there's a season to see how he would do as a starter in the SEC. Hitters I'm most intrigued by are Lawler, Marcelo Mayer, Adrian Del Castillo and Jud Fabian. In general, I think the top 8-10 are all intriguing.
Make sure he doesn’t take those to school when he’s older and trade them. Do kids still do that these days?
Yea he's 3 months old now, may have to do something with the more valuable ones when he gets older. Luckily with tigers draft record, that's only like 3 cards haha
What’s the worst card you have on those shelves? Hard to read all the names. I saw a Chance Ruffin one lol. That’s a blast from the past.
Anything from the 90s, lol. Cade Gaspar, Matt Brunson, Mike Drumright, or hit early 2000s with Baugh, Sleeth, Wheatland and Scott Moore. Also between 2010 and 2016 with Ruffin, Crawford, Burrows, Stewart and Hill
On the flip side, it's funny how prospect cards sell for more than the stars because everyone is chasing the next hot rookie card. Torkelson auto version of that card is $400+ right now for the base one. So im holding off on him until those prices cool off. Thats the negative side of us having #1 pick, his card sells like crazy. Luckily I bought some of those autos before the market blew up, think that Riley Greene card goes about $225 now. That Mize about $210, Manning about $70. Verlander only vet worth anything. Probably $300 or so, luckily bought that one when I was in HS for like $30. Even a guy like Castellanos, you can get his auto rookie for like $10. Most those cards aren't worth much, just thought it was cool to have every first rd pick for a complete set.
Missed that Mlb.com updated their prospects rankings Torkelson is #4, Mize is #5, Manning #20, Greene #25, Skubal #42
I believe Manning was Avila's first pick, although the GM doesn't really pick guys in the draft and the same people who picked Faedo were pretty much picking or us for a decade before that. So he's responsible for all of them in some way.
Drafting Gators in the early rounds worked well for Detroit from 2013 to 2017 2013 Jonathan Crawford Tigers 1st rd pick 2017 Alex Faedo Tigers 1st rd pick 2017 Jarrad Davis Lions 1st rd pick 2017 Teez Tabor Lions 2nd rd pick
On a serious note. Seems like a low risk, high reward type move. The guy sucked the last two years, but was decent in 2017 and 2018. If he can rebound in 2021, Avila may be able to flip him for a weak hitting middle infielder, or a hard throwing righty with no command at the deadline.
