I decided to opt out of Christmas celebrations and I am missing Christmas Eve tonight at my Mom's with my brothers and some of her husband's kids. My anxiety is zero compared to Thanksgiving. I had my own table for dinner and pretty much stayed outside or away from everybody. It sucked. So for Christmas before I decided to opt out I told my Mom that I wanted to sit alone at my own table again, no present passing out, leave after dinner, etc. She then asks later in the conversation if she could use one of the bigger folding tables so somebody could sit with me in case somebody else wanted to sit alone and away from everybody.
Classic I wish I could be with thrr egg n, but I’d like to imagine that bottle is out on the counter with a flat 3L of Coke next to it.
So my parents tested positive for the rona a week ago, but according to my brother they were out shopping during their quarantine time today. Not like running to the grocery store and grabbing some shit, actual shopping. They’re pissed at him for postponing family Christmas a week. His wife had surgery and can’t risk it but he’s the dick I guess. Last time I saw the parents was about 8-9 days before they were positive but they thought I should be quarantined while they traipsed about. It should be noted that my mother is a nurse who teaches nurses. This batch is gonna be dumb as fuck. She’s gonna get XM radio so she turns the fucking AM talk radio off. Good news is that despite the parents carelessly exposing them, brother’s family tested clean so I’m spending Christmas at their place clipping my nieces’ show steers and drinking busch lattes and listening to a good red dirt playlist instead of the ramblings of my infantile parents. Edit: I thought I should add that since my mom is continually ranting and raving about how China is behind everything, flat tires, politics, paper cuts, cat bites, etc, we’re serving only Chinese food on rescheduled Christmas. And there will be photos of chairman Mao in most gifts.
They know better than to expect anything less than smartass responses but I’m not sure it’ll land. I’ve been responding to the group texts with Chyna gifs and they’ve fallen flat except for my brother sending one saying “nice, they’re confused as hell now.” The lattes and calves are my escape.

My SIL has been struggling with a lot of mental health issues since she got extremely sick with Covid. Like can’t control her emotions and just says off the wall stuff. Yells then cries. We all understand why but it can’t get weird at our house. Like walking on egg shells. I always joke with all my in laws. Told her hair looked a little frazzled yesterday and she lost her shit.
We normally have a huge extended family Christmas on Christmas Eve with appr. 30 people which we cancelled this year. We were with my parents and my brothers. my aunt, her husband, and her son decided to come by to bring gifts, which completely defeated the purpose of splitting up this year. she would pull her mask down to speak to everyone. I suspect he real reason they came was for my uncle to show us his brand new model y tesla,which I must confess was pretty badass. it is worth noting that said uncle is a doctor.
My in-laws and two SIL's were supposed to be over for breakfast/gifts this morning. My wife called them at 8:30 and they were all still in bed and said they would get their shit together and be over soon (live 10 minutes away). Whatever. An hour goes by and my MIL calls my wife and says that my one SIL lost her dog. It broke free from its harness on the walk before they left. We don't allow this dog around our 2 yr old as it's a real shit head of a dog and was very aggressive toward her the only time they have met. So, my wife is now headed out to help find this dog. She says she's going to run over it with the SUV if given a shot. Spoiler Did I mention this dog only has 3 legs? She fucking lost a 3 legged dog. Absolutely incredible.
My super conservative mother in law (who I recently told to leave our house last week when she started spouting off Covid conspiracy theories as a 67 year old woman to her grandchildren) knowing her son is a dumbass lib got me an American Flag and a flag pole for Christmas. I guarantee she purchased it off of some Fox News commercial Thinking about telling her to keep the flag and I’ll have her daughter use the pole
My brother in law’s company has Macallan as a client and asked what he should mix with the bottle of Macallan 12 they gave him for Christmas.
Father in law asked us to set up a zoom call for him to talk to his sisters, nephews and nieces, etc. on Christmas Eve since they’re all social distancing... It worked, I was a good son in law, I did my duty, my wife was happy. Fast forward to today and he wants smaller mini zoom calls for just him and one of his siblings or nieces or nephews for about 15 minutes each over the next few days. And he didn’t want to download the app or make an account - just have me host them each time.
This hits close to home. My MIL LOVES Christmas and the FIL is the most emotionally inaccessible person I’ve ever met so they go all out on gifts (though it’s usually quantity over quality). Right now there are 8 adults and one toddler there for immediate family and two babies on the way so it’s only going to get worse. She insists that every gift is opened individually as she films it all and then wraps up with recording everyone piling all the stuff up around them and doing a video summery of what each person received. Last year for 9 people it took over two hours, the last 1:15 of which our then 7 month old was NOT interested in. Fun was had by just the MIL from what I could tell.
Our dog had a post surgery follow up scheduled tomorrow with her surgeon, who is near both our parents so we decided to head over today to stay at in laws and stop at my parents tomorrow with my sisters and their husband's and thats it. No extended family or anything. Well one of my brother in laws is a selfish lazy asshat, who uses "headaches" as an excuse to get out of everything. We did a brief zoom with extended family yesterday and of course he didn't even bother to get on zoom with my sister and the kids because he "had a headache" and now no one wants to get together tomorrow anymore because they are worried he could have covid because headache is an early symptom. I really want to send a message to the whole family stating this asshole has had a headache 3 of the last 4 family get together we've had, he's clearly faking it. But it doesn't make sense to risk anything so I think that's going to be canceled now. Thats bullshit my BIL faking a headache to get out of just saying hello on zoom is going to cancel Christmas plans. I'm like 99% sure its fake, I even jokingly texted my wife and other sister before we got on "odds Matt doesn't show up on zoom?" He's used headaches to get out of family get together 2 or 3 times, and used it to get out of doing chores when every one else was doing them. Edit to add - we were just going to meet up at a park and exchange gifts and open in the car and walk around the park for those who wanted to. We weren't going to do it indoors

My old lady's aunt stopped in to drop off cookies. I hid in the bedroom. Everyone masked up for her. Anyways, she obviously couldn't control her mouth and started ranting about how ridiculous everyone is being about covid. Bitch works in a hospital. Granted it's office work. But she makes the dumbest comparisons. So I just loudly said "oh my godddd" and she's goes "what, does he think like me?" "NOPE!" Her daughter who lives with her father likely has covid but hasn't tested yet. Just to get some incite into her playbook. We had it out years ago because she wanted to rant about Confederate Monuments being part of history. I wasnt having it.
It isn't just that though, his whole life he makes excuses and quits shit. He went to law school after college and quit after a semester, joined the army and quit bootcamp, tried to become an accountant and quit after one test (although now I think he's trying again and uses studying for it as an excuse every chance he gets). He also apparently owes the IRS some money but I've never heard that full story. Uses excuses to avoid family get together (headaches is his go to), and same thing with work. We were at our cottage one year and a bad storm knocked a tree over onto my uncles boat. My uncle recovering from shoulder surgery, my dad who has arthritis in his hands, myself and hell my 13 year old nephew were removing the damage from the tree falling over and he went and took a nap instead of helping because he had a headache. And he even had the audacity to get up from one cottage and to walk to a cottage further away because we were being too loud with the chainsaw for him to sleep. When they moved houses my dad took a day off work to help my sister move some shit to their new house because my BIL is worthless and my sister kind of doesn't do much either so they were way behind. My dad was over there three hours packing and moving stuff thinking no one was home before my BIL came out of the bedroom, apparently taking the day off work that day too without telling my dad for id guess a headache and was sleeping the whole time my dad was working on their house.
I am not reading all of that shit but I know how this story ends, it was not his fault. He was treated unfairly at every place he failed.
