Truman reads the Harry Potter Series & TC TOO

Finished the series for the first time last night. Eager to go back through the thread.

 

Damn. Wish you would have done a thread.

 

If I’d had some way of knowing how much nostalgia was involved in someone reading the first time(reading through the thread and already wish I could recapture it), I would have...but I avoided this thread because, 12 years after the last one was published, i somehow managed to spend a giant amount of time in the internet, and still be completely ignorant about the major spoilers of the series.

 

We need a full recap.

 

I only read while traveling so the whole series took me about 4 months(with the first couple being the slowest of them...once I was in, I was hooked). As a result, I already don’t entirely remember the sequence of events of some of the early books or in what book what happened.

I’ll hit up the main HP thread with everything I remember but it won’t be nearly as entertaining as this has been.

Well great. I was about to start reading this thread but I see we start on book 2 here. Just finished book 1.

Why does Harry et al take the big risk of seeing off Hagrid's dragon? I'd have made him be the one at the top of the tower. He works for the school, he can just say "school business" whereas they get in big trouble for being up there. I get the book is for kids but it's a little head scratching when the 11 year olds figure everything out over the adults.

(Yes I liked the book and see why it's such a classic and am eager to read the rest)

I was pretty surprised it was Quirrel behind the final door trying to steal the Sorcerer's Stone. I knew the inescapable spoiler "Snape kills Dumbledore" and they painted Snape as so evil the whole time that I never suspected anyone else.

I was wondering why tf Dumbledore hadn't figured it out if the kids did, but of course he had.

I'm annoyed that now I have to read another part about Harry hanging out with those horrid Dursleys again. I like that the book started and ended around a school type calendar; wonder if that pattern will hold for each book.

 

This isn't a real spoiler, but yes. The books essentially run from the beginning of the school year to the last day of the year. Book 1 is written for 11-13 year olds, JK put some very sublte hints in there that it was Quirrell but nothing that really hits you over the head until your 2nd read through. It was not meant to be figured out imo.

 

I think some of the coarseness may be because it’s British. Also from ~25 years ago at this point

 

yea, but outside of a lack of diversity, her books are going to age well. Not much in there that is really objectionable that we look back on and need to explain away to the next generation.

However, I'm kinda thinking the Slytherin heir has to be a first-year? Otherwise, why did the message that the chamber opened just appear this year?

How do they keep track of that shit anyway? Teachers are always verbally taking points but do they remember to write this up when they go their office?

Yeah, I don't recall when you specifically learn it but basically the house points are kept in containers next to one another. When a teacher gives or takes away points, the rubies (or other gem stones for the different houses) are added or subtracted based on what the professor says. Basically,

 

That's also my understanding but I wasn't sure if it was actual canon or some invention of fanon.

 

I haven't read or watched any fanfic so I'd have to assume I either read it in the books or saw it in the movies (though the movies obviously take some liberties, as all movies made from books do).

 

It is canon, it does get mentioned in the books.

I feel like Harry doesn't make adequate use of the invisibility cloak. He still has that right?

You need a book out of the restricted section of the library -- why go to the trouble of getting a teacher to sign for it, leaving a written record? Slip in unseen and grab it.

You want to spy on Slytherin to find out if Draco is the heir -- why cook a dangerous potion that takes a month to make and requires you to undertake risky missions to steal the ingredients? Turn invisible and spy.

I just got a ton laid on me in the chapter where Harry goes to Hogsmeade and hears the professors spilling "loads" about his past including how Sirius Black was his parents best man and the one that dimed them out to _______________. Still digesting

 

That chapter hits hard. From fun throwing mud at malfoy to Oh shit, Black betrayed Harry's parents, killed their friend, and is now after Harry. :ohfuck:

 

I’m not 100% certain that Black isn’t trying to reach Harry for some good reason? Maybe he doesn’t really want to murder him and this is one of those misdirections.

Wondering why he isn’t negatively affected by Azkaban like others. You gotta be fucked up to just be chilling smiling inside there
