Think Parsons could be there. Starting to think top 6 picks going to include 3 QBs, Sewell, Smith and either Chase or Parsons. Would be unusual for no D in top 6 but I think it could happen
The report earlier from Breer saying something along the lines of "Rod Wood wants to make a splash hire from the college ranks," or something along those lines, is kind of terrifying considering they continually suggest that he's not in charge of making those kinds of decisions.
So we are starting to see teams operate with a bit more urgency. Feels like we just need one domino to fall before the jobs fill quickly.
Campbell is interesting to me. The closest comparison is probably Vrabel, who seems to be a hard ass but also a players coach. Vrabel is also a bad game manager. No idea what Campbell would be like as a coach but I wouldn’t hate the hire.
Vrabel had the one year as a DC, even if I don't think Houston's D was particularly good with him. I like the things I've read about Campbell in terms of everyone on the team seeming to like him. I think I'd rather take a swing there than with Bevell or Lewis, but I also have to admit I probably wouldn't say that if I wasn't a Lions' fan. With a lot of these guys, it's hard to know how I feel about them without knowing their plans for a staff.
Why do you say he’s a bad game manager? All I can recall seeing are the dozens of articles calling him an “emerging genius” because of his self-inflicted penalty/clock management strategy.
He’s been good at stuff like that, but he’s also just as likely to punt on 4th and 1 inside the opponents territory.
Campbell had 12 games as a head coach, which probably trumps a year as a DC in terms of relevant experience. He went 5-7 after they started 1-3, so I'm not sure that he overachieved after becoming HC or anything, though.
Definitely reasonable. I wonder how different he is now than he was back in 2015 when he got the interim tag and made news for bringing back the Oklahoma drill and things like that. He's been with Payton in NO the last five years, so I would hope he's matured beyond some of that "football guy" shtick. I've read that he's a big part of their running game scheme, which has generally been really good over the years even as Brees has gotten older and less capable of throwing it beyond 20 years.
I'd still prefer Saleh to the others. I'd have Campbell and Bowles in the second group, and then Bevell/Lewis in the next tier. I don't know what I'm supposed to think of Fitzgerald (if he's actually a candidate), Smith or Bieniemy.
I am just hoping for Dodds. Based on his track record, Dodds coming here would mean he is getting say on the hire. That’s enough for me.
Bradley was just hired by the Raiders as their DC, fwiw. I'm not terribly concerned with who Saleh would hire as DC, given his connections to various people around the league on that side of the ball.
I think Campbell was a finalist in Indy when they hired Reich after the McDaniels disaster, and that Dodds was involved in that hiring. If that's correct, Dodds would seem to know a decent amount about Campbell as a candidate and might view him favorably.
Campbell was also part of the Dolphins staff during the Incognito/Martin mess. Organization needs a huge culture shift following Patricia, hopefully Campbell has learned and changed since then. Also hope this doesn't mean Ireland is becoming a stronger candidate for the GM spot
I'm not sure what to do with Campbell about the Incognito/Martin mess, but I think you absolutely have to ask the questions about it in the interview. I've read all I need to about Ireland to know he's not the guy I want as GM, and I don't know how they can talk the way they have about culture for the last month and then hire Ireland with his background.
If Dodds isn't the guy, seems like there's a decent chance Atlanta/Denver will make our choice for us by picking two of the three between Paton, Fontenot and Holmes. We would end up with whichever is left between those three, and then maybe Ireland.
Lewis seems like the only guy who would fit that model, depending on how much credit you want to give for Campbell/Bevell being interim guys. I forgot about Bowles, who also fits.
I've decided they should pick Micah Parsons at number 7. If he's gone, I want the OT or one of the top 2 receivers.
Birkett’s article makes it sound like Dodds interviewed in person. Still haven’t seen that confirmed.
I never know what to make of Scouting Directors. They are obviously integral to the Draft, but Snead is the one making those picks. You assume Holmes will have similar philosophies, but you never know. The Rams are always trading picks, so it’s not even fair to grade Holmes on their draft picks. It’s just very tricky to get a feel for his resume.
Yeah, this is what I don't really get. I think it's important to look at the players they selected and ask whether they were worthy of being picked where they were. Holmes' job is to run the scouting department and stack the board going into draft night, and that kind of analysis is all we can really judge him on from the outside. I think it's kind of dumb to think that Holmes (or anyone in his position) is sitting in the room telling Snead whether he should pick a RB or OT in round 3 or any other round. That's Snead's job, and is the job Holmes is interviewing to have here.
