Still trying to figure out why they didn’t just make him the main villain of a Justice League film. You had a trilogy set up for JL in Doomsday, Brainiac and Darkseid
It blows my mind that there are so many people on the internet so loyal to Snyder about his DCEU movies considering what you guys are talking about. And that WB is allowing him to spend all this money for a 4-hour cut of a movie that already sucked once with a plot/arc they already bailed on the first time. Realistically, what are the odds the Snyder Cut doesn't suck? Maybe 20%?
I think it'll at least be tonally consistent with Man of Steel and BvS. In that sense it'll be a better follow-up than Justice League 2017 was. But as a movie? Yeah, it's probably going to disappoint.
The saddest part of all this is they have a movie coming that could hard reset the entire universe but they still don't have a clue on how to tell a good story
The Cult of Snyder is a really bizarre phenomenon, and they only care about the DC movies that he directs. Which is they want him to be the Feige (who they also hate) of the entire DCEU. Hell they harassed a former DC executive online for praising the Joker movie.
I’m no Snyder fanboy by a long shot but my only comparison is the Snyder cut for The Watchmen, which improves the movie pretty dramatically. We’re so far removed from JL at this point, I’ll probably never watch a newer version of it though.
They hyped up the Snyder Cut for BvS, too. It was an added 30 minutes that did nothing but make it longer and more boring.
The first phase of DCEU was nothing more than a reactionary cash grab from a studio that understood 0% of what made the MCU work. And they were rewarded with the short term box office money but also irreparable long term damage and they'll need to deal with it.
There's nothing you can do with BvS to fix the inherent flaw of the film, which is Superman vs Batman in the climax only happens because Lex threatens Superman's mom. Of all the ways to have them square off, the movie went for the most contrived, idiotic, and small-minded choice possible. Fucking blackmail. And I get it, Superman didn't find Batman to fight him, and Batman was too drunk on rage to listen to him...AT FIRST. But the moment the kryptonite wore off and Batman's punches started turning into a mouse hitting a steel door, Superman should have ended the fight right there, since the only reason they were going at it was because of a stupid contrivance. The problems with JL are different and I'm genuinely curious to see what is done with it. If nothing else, getting rid of the CGI on Henry Cavill that made him look like a PS3 cutscene will be a tremendous boost.
How the fuck does one of the biggest studios in the world have such bad CGI In today’s age? It’s like this is from 1998.
Sure, but the person who thought that BvS story was a good idea is the person making the JL reboot. And his answer to "there's way too much shit going on here" in BvS was to add 30 minutes of more shit. And it sounds like his idea for this cut of the movie is essentially the same stuff that was bad enough that Whedon was brought in to re-write the original version in the first place. Granted, WB might be dumb enough to make a worse movie, but everything to date about Snyder in this run suggests it would almost be an accident if this doesn't suck, too.
Warner Bros - a shared universe can’t be done Marvel Studios - Warner Bros - quick, throw shit at wall. It will stick
Snyder wants to make a live action Dark Knight Returns, to which I ask, “Wasn’t that Batman’s storyline in BvS?”
If Snyder wants to make a panel for panel retelling of Frank Miller’s DKR, sure I guess, see 300 and Watchmen. It’s when he starts writing his own stories when everything falls apart.
The Dark Knight Returns doesn't work anymore, imo. It was a very period-specific title that needed the era in which it was created to be the thing it was. Separate from that, DKR is just a pretty good little elseworlds tale. It's only when you put it in the context of a mid-80's Batman deconstruction that it resonates. Snyder could translate it as close to panel for panel as possible (which actually wouldn't be possible with the 4x4 format Miller employed) but I suspect he would not be able to translate the meaning and purpose of the story. I don't know if anyone can after thirty-five years.
I think he did a pretty solid job with that Cold War era “meaning and purpose” in Watchman but, I’ll add this caveat. Maybe it only felt that way to me since I read the graphic novel. Someone new to the material maybe didn’t get the foreboding threat that I got. I think a great director could definitely do it, as you said and elseworld tale but Snyder is not great director unless he’s just moving the original material to a new medium. (Did he help write the screenplay for Watchman?)
Shame they wasted the weird mind control on Max Lord, because Peter Dinklage as Dr. Psycho would have been perfect casting.
It’s very similar to that initial reaction of “THERE HAS TO BE A JJ CUT” with The Rise of Skywalker. Some stuff is so terrible and some fans are so religious that the only way they can survive is to feed themselves lies about some better version lurking out there behind the gate of evil suits who focus grouped the final product to death.
There's no saving that piece of star wars shit no matter how much they un-edit. Unless there's a cut that completely changes the direction of several characters it's fucked no matter what.
To add to the badass woman part of it even more, she was like 6 months pregnant when that was filmed and they had to CGI her belly out of it.
I mean mind control was Max Lord's power. It's why WW breaks his neck in the comics because he had control of Superman.
To show how terrible WB is, they tried to cut that scene out of the movie because they thought it did not add to the storyline, Patty Jenkins had to fight like hell to get that in the movie.
You're right. My point was to bring up a new villain for the next. I just didn't like the way they set his powers and as much as I like Lord, a Dr. Psycho/Cheetah mashup would have been better. Maybe they can pair him with Giganta.
Wait, so in the comics, Lord just has mind control power. And he doesn't need a dumb little wish crystal?
In the comics, he has mind control. He spent time as a good guy before becoming a villain and was eventually killed by WW when he took control of Superman.
I’ll be honest, I thought the wish power thing was one of the better parts of the movie. Seemed vastly different than most villain powers we have seen
because they hire Visual effects companies as if they're independent contractors, and you get what you pay for on a deadline and budget.
Started a full rewatch of TAS with my daughter and I cannot believe how much better the storylines are in those 21 minute episodes than what DC/WB is putting out in feature length films now. Pretty sure the Man-Bat episode is going to give her nightmares. Fucking episode 2 of the series! Show was way ahead of its time
I’m finishing up my Titans rewatch and plan to hit TAS next. I’m excited. It’s been years since I’ve watched some of them.
Almost every big movie gets this treatment. Occasionally someone notices and it gets laughed at. Usually it goes nowhere, but sometimes you got something random like Johnny Depp getting a nomination for Jack Sparrow.
Downloaded this today. Will watch soon. Did anyone see that deathstroke movie that came out recently?
