Hahaha PC’s still in Utah at the end of the day.

To answer both of y’all’s questions about PC. It is more “open” per say, but it’s not exactly the same as before.

Make your reservations now for skiing PC. If you’re doing Deer Valley they aren’t doing reservations, but they are limiting their numbers WAY more than before. I’ve heard so much as half as many people as normal. So buy your passes now, do not wait. This goes for either resort. Much to the dismay of most. IMO I think the Vail reservations system works fine, it’s only been annoying and blacked out around the holidays and that’s because so many people made those reservations first thing this season, and with so little extra terrain open they couldn’t open more up. Moral of the story on the PC side is go ahead and lock your days in now so you don’t have to worry. If all else fails, I’ve found that doing day of reservations works after about 11am as well, and I’ve been able to get on mountain every single day I’ve wanted to so far.

The snow here has been pretty weak so far. I was out all weekend mostly on the canyons side and it’s not rough, but it’s far from normal too, some thin cover, and lots of hard packed snow with occasionally Icy spots on steeper areas. A lot is yet to be opened which leads to a little bit of extra traffic sometimes even in places that aren’t as busy. On the flip side we had a little overachiever snow over the weekend, and the long term forecast is looking like the pattern is finally switching to get more storms to dip a little further south.

Face coverings are required on mountain, the lodges are open, but if you sit inside you must make a reservation. The lift lines are broken down by how many in your party, and 2 “strangers” can ride together on a quad, 3 on a 6 seater. So far on mountain I felt very safe as far as covid precautions being made. Not so much for inexperienced folks riding where they really shouldn’t. We just really need more snow to space the people out a little more

Town welcomes visitors with open arms. With no Sundance this year it basically opens up another two weeks of the year that otherwise just would not have been available to your average visitor. Typically it’s a great time to ski as the Sundance crowd isn’t typically skiing much but we need all the visitors we can, so sacrifices must be made. I’ll take a little extra mountain traffic in exchange for all the businesses staying in business.

The real question comes down to budget, and where you’re staying?

Bars: you’ll want to get a drink or 10 at No Name. If you make it to later in the night, The Spur is normally a great spot. High West off of town lift is probably a must visit too. Wasatch Brew Pub is a nice balance if you’re looking for a good beer but don’t want a full on bar. Depending on where you’re skiing and staying I’ve got a few off Main Street suggestions too. Face coverings are required outside on Main Street, and are required throughout Summit county. Most restaurants are running at about 50/75 capacity.

I’ll hold off on restaurants until I head budget. Don’t wanna say go here when it’s way above whatcha wanna spend.

Eventually I’ll post my full on visit list so that all my recommendations can be in one spot.

Thanks. Going mid January. It is a guy trip, so don't have to worry about paying for family meals. So no real budget concerns.

From West, but have skied Maine. I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though they are ran by same company, Sugarloaf is more resort-ish imo. Sundary River seemed to move quicker and had more ski time, but Sugarloaf had some noticeably longer runs. Not a huge difference tbh gbr

What's up bros, long-time casual skiier here (used to go alot as a kid) who has been going once every two years. Starting to get back into it, heading to Steamboat and then Deer Valley later this year and think it's finally time to buy a helmet and goggles so I'm not getting eaten up by rentals every year. Any recs on a reasonably priced set or should I just go to the Oakley website and go ham?

I'd consider buying skiis but aren't a good pair multiple grand? Or should I just buy some used demo's on the mountain?

    TIA

Don’t buy skis if you’re going to use them a few times a year. Investing in boots would be a better idea.

Buy a nice pair of fitted boots from an outfitter which will be 4-600 depending on what you like. It makes the most difference in terms of comfort and performance on the mountain of any single thing you use. Whatever you have left over, helmet and goggles. You can probably go used on the helmet and mid tier goggles for 250 combined.

Do not think this is optional. Outfitter should do this part of the purchase.

That’ll barely cover the boots, especially if you’re talking about molded boots. If you go off the shelf then expect about 300-600 for boots. Going to a place like Surefoot will likely get almost to 800-1000 bucks

You’ll want to get a helmet with MIPS otherwise it’s really only good for one impact. It may be a little more but I don’t think you should skimp on that.

Goggles can range from $50-250. I have smith I/OX with two different lenses I believe I paid about $150 for them. If you get something without being interchangeable lense do not go super dark or mirrored, as you’ll have a really hard time seeing on cloudy days or in the shade.

The Smith I/OX are great and the lenses are easy to change. Mine came with low light and regular. I got a Smith vantage helmet when they were on sale but honestly it’s like $8 per rental.

Boots are definitely the best purchase you can get as we’ve said... I bought mine last year at an independent place in Vail (I guess the resort owns most of the retailers) and after all charges for molding etc they were $915.

I bought skis this year because I’ve been paying for demos every time so won’t take me too long to make it back, they were $600, bindings were another $260, and mounting was $100.

    It definitely adds up.

$400-$600 for boots. Another $50-$200 for a footbed (it makes a huge difference).

$150ish gets a decent goggle. Smith squad XL or or Oakley Fall Line.

$130 for a Smith mission helmet will get you going.

Park City/cottonwoods? lCC has been pretty good, not great. Park city’s resorts are struggling with snow, but most of the main runs are opened.

We’re looking at a pattern change later this week too that looks promising, could be in for a couple storms in a row starting Thursday night.

need another few weeks of good snow in Colorado.

Skiied Vail Friday and Saturday. They need a couple feet of snow if we’re being honest. Got 4-6 inches Friday night through Saturday day and it was a playground so made up for a bad Friday.

Mountain felt packed on Saturday. Certainly no social distancing on lifts and lift lines.

    Does this code still work?

And trying to find ski apparel in Charleston is a no go, and online selection seems spotty as well, which is odd imo. Anyways, I am going to Colorado in 3 weeks, and need base layer, pants, gloves, goggles. I suppose I could find a spot to purchase these things rather easily in Denver once I land, right?

Could definitely be local rumor mill (my parents are in Granby). I guess ski areas aren't required to report outbreaks to the state, and they were likely trying to keep it under wraps heading into this weekend.

I’m going to winter park this week. It’s my first time skiing on an actual mountain and I am very excited. Have been to our fake mountain here around town twice. First time I went it was tough. It was a little warm and the fake snow was slush and you’d fly. It actually snowed here for once and we went Friday night and it was awesome. Had much better control. Only wrecked once and it was on a blue that was pretty tough and not well lit

I went to steamboat last year, but because my friend is a giant dumbass we didn’t get to ski because they wanted over $500 for a lift ticket and he didn’t want to pay. Did get to snowmobile though which was cool.
