Thanks for the reply. Really open to anything, other than a beach. We would like to do some sightseeing during the day and then have access to good food in the evening. In New Orleans, we hit up some historical sites, touristy things like Bourbon St., ran a couple of Thanksgiving 5ks, then stuffed our faces with food and drink the rest of the day. Something along those lines. I was thinking maybe Boston because neither of us have been there.

We went to Big Sur River Inn back in October and it was really good. Fiancée’s friend we were with who lives in Monterey said it’s their normal stop. There’s a big patio and outside seating area but then there’s also a shallow river out back they let the kids play in and you can sit on Adirondacks in. We tried to go to Pfeiffer Beach but it was always too crowded, they only let a certain number of cars down at a tile and there’s no way of lining up/waiting. Her friend went back one day when they were camping and got there first thing when it opened and was able to get down to the beach and said it’s worth it

I have a small 1br studio apartment (king bed) two blocks from beach on Anna Maria Island FL that I will be renting out if anyone wants a cheap beach vacation this year. Nothing special house wise, but very cool/fun Island.

Was going to just kick it at the hotel and try to do some hikes, not like do anything around people.

Looks like Ventana is likely going to be closed and I'll have to punt on the trip but TBD

I have to cancel a trip to Peru because of restrictions in Peru and coming back for Covid. Looks like we're going to be changing to Hawaii and planning on staying on Maui. Never been. Any recommendations on where to stay on the island? We usually Airbnb everywhere. Area of the island we should stay or resorts recommended?

Wailea and Kaanapali/Lahaina/Kapalua are the options. I preferred Wailea but they're all good

We stay at Kahana, between Kaanapali and Kapalua. Quieter and probably cheaper than either, but the water isn't as clear. Also, wife has required surgery from a sea urchin sting off Kahana, and I got stung by a box jellyfish last time we were there. Hopefully the wildlife will leave us alone when we return in April

Last time we drove down through Kihei/Wailea and weren't that impressed by it, in part because the road hugs the water more so there are fewer options for on-the-water rentals.

Lahaina is a cute touristy town, and Napili Bay is the mostest fun if you just want to get in the water and have waves beat the hell out of you

Have we talked about the recent requirement the US announced stating every traveler entering the US must have a COVID negative test within 3 days of departure? That includes US citizens as well.

It's already a big enough hassle getting a test to enter a foreign country. Don't think I want to jump through hoops trying to get tested in a foreign country. Fortunately I can still cross by land into Mexico.

Same thing for us. Plus god forbid one of us tests positive and we have to quarantine in a foreign country for 2 weeks.

Has anyone tried to redeem a flight credit from a covid canceled flight? We’ve got an American and Delta credit from last May that we’d booked with Chase points. We tried to call tonight to use the voucher on a new trip this fall. Talking to the Chase lady she kept finding flights that were magically increasing in price by the value of our voucher. It was complete bullshit. I’m staring at the price on the Chase portal and when she gets to the final price on the phone it’s suddenly gone up to the perfect amount that nullifies our applied credit amount. So basically Delta is stealing our money because Canada wouldn’t let us come to Banff last May.

Anyone found a way around this?

happened to me too. you can only do it in the exact fare bucket you bought your original ticket in. Mine were hundreds and hundreds more so I only got a one-way for my round-trip voucher

did this last month for a cancelled trip bought with Amex points. There was a complicating factor in that the original trip was my wife and I traveling together, but we were using the credit for only her so that took some time for the guy to figure out, but other than wait time the process was pretty easy

I had an issue with miles last night. Flight to Peru was 140,000 miles. Hawaii was 142,000. Agent kept telling me it was 142,000 to switch. The system wasn't allowing them to just switch miles to new flights. I had to cancel my Peru flight. Wait on the miles to go back into my account then redeem them again.

I've been a few times, it's on of my favorite places. Haven't been back since the hurricane. We usually go on Memorial Day

Either Ferry to the island is the same total time, so just book the one that's closest to your flight landing. Red Hook is just more time in a taxi van with 10 people vs Charlotte Amaile is really close to the air port and a longer ferry. Views are great. Seems like we always take Red Hook there (more frequent) and C.A. Ferry back.

Rent a Jeep early. I've rented from a handful of places. They all seem the same.
Rent some snorkel gear or at a minimum a mask.
I've stayed on both "ends" of the Island. I prefer Cruz Bay b/c there is a bit more night life. Corral bay is really chill and laid back with a few restaurants.
    Really like Longboard Restaurant.
Kekoa Sailing if you want to take a day trip snorkeling & drinking an to Jost van Dyke. It was kinda expensive, but it's free painkillers all day, snorkel a spot or two then Jost for the second half of the day.

Daily once there....mostly my wife and I would go to a beach in the morning with a cooler of beer, eat lunch somewhere get more beer, go to another beach. Not sure how much you've read into it, but essentially you have tiny beach all over the island that you drive to. Some have to hike to.

    Some of my favorites.
Maho Bay is very chill and great for turtles. You'll see a bunch out popping their head up and can go swim with them.
Salt Pond Beach...It's a bit of a hike to it, but it's a really great bay and some good snorkeling.
Hansen Bay. I'm not sure that accessibility anymore. Used to be an entry at Vie's Beach. Lady that owns land and sold conch fritters and charged $2 to park.
Waterlemon Cay -- If you can swim well, hike out and snorkel to it. It's a few hundred yards off the coast.
Salomon Bay - Hike down, should be fairly empty.
Trunk Bay...this is where all the tourists go from the St Thomas Cruise Ships & the main beach that's in photos. Probably the only "busy" beach. But it's fucking beautiful and the Underwater Coal Reef Trail to the island off the coast is really cool. I think we went in the morning before it got busy then left before lunch.

Another thing ppl do is rent Dingys for like $200 a day and just beach hop across all the places on the north shore

There are a ton of other beaches I haven't made it too. Some require some longer hikes, like on the mid southern section of the island that doesn't have roads. It's a great little island, that mostly undeveloped and doesn't feel crowded

Is the jeep really necessary? We've got a full size sedan booked right now because with a kid that'll be easiest for us but I can switch if an suv is necessary to be comfortable.

Some places are 4x4, but it's probably not 100% necessary. Seems like 90% of the vehicles on St John are jeeps.

I’m in Maui right now. It’s completely dead in relation to pre-COVID times. If you can swing it and come before people get vaccinated later this year, I’d definitely think long and hard. I was initially skeptical about travel and the pre-arrival testing quelled my fears.

Please add any additional notes about the trip - Hawaii is the only state I haven't been to and Maui seems to be the frontrunner of islands to go to first.

    Maui:

    • The only island we’ve been to more is Kauai, but they have different COVID protocols and it’s very quiet compared to Maui. It would be our choice if your #1 priority is adventure, otherwise, Maui is our favorite
    • We split our time between Kaanapali and Wailea and Wailea is our favorite because it’s the more quiet side of the island. Kihei has quickly become a nice alternative to Lahaina in our minds and there is plenty of great food that’s an easy drive from Wailea
    • We kicked ourselves for not doing the road to Hana again. It’s dead and there is virtually no traffic. If it’s your first time to Maui, it is a worthwhile experience. I feel the same about Haleakala.
    • You can easily make it through a week without going out to a formal dinner. There is a Costco by the airport and two large Safeways on both major tourist areas
    • It’s easy to completely disconnect and get lost in the day at the beach or by the pool, which we love
    • For reference, the resort we stayed at in Wailea was at 15% capacity on a weekend. At times, we had the entire pool area to ourselves and we loved every second
    • We also met Magic Johnson yesterday walking in the morning
    • Also, plenty of female ass cheeks to stare at
    • Second edit, this was our first time here during whale season. They’re everywhere on the horizon and it’s fun trying to watch for them breaching. It’s also slightly cooler than the summer and the evenings are spectacular
