Worst possible...huge masses on her spleen, one ruptured - internal bleeding was causing the lethargy.

90% chance they’re malignant, but the bleeding makes it impossible to do a biopsy at this point. Gave her some medicine to help coagulate and stabilize the bleeding so a biopsy may be possible in a few days but she may be dead by then. Odds are she doesn’t make it another 6 weeks. On the off chance it’s benign we can do a spleen removal which would probably give her another year or two but old dog, would be tough for her to withstand the surgery.

Just devastating, she was totally fine 48 hours ago.

Sorry for the sad news guys

went through this exact scenario for my Jack Russell. He was bleeding out so fast not even a transfusion could save him, in the vet's opinion.

    Sorry, man.

    Man that sucks

Similar thing happened to my uncles last Labrador
Dog slept in the bed with him or on the recliner in the bedroom, and one night ne wakes up in the middle of the night to his dog just standing next to the bed
He got up thinking he had to pee, so he went to open the door and the dog barely stumbled to make it outside and just stood there
He said he spent the rest of the night trying to get him to sit or lay down, but he could tell he was in too much pain

Vet first thing that morning found it was cancer ate up all in the dogs abdomen

Just like that one day Radar was fine acting like nothing was wrong and the next morning he had to be put to sleep he was in so much pain

Weighed risk/reward, just dropped her off at Emergency Room for a splenectomy. Wasn’t improving at home, gonna open her up and remove it all. If Malignant, nothing we could have done. If benign she’s got a chance for another 12-24 months.

Now just need her to make it through the surgery, fingers crossed. It’s probably 1 out of 10 or 1/20 but not horrible odds

Thanks guys - she had a great life and great quality of life right until the end, no struggling for months on end. Great companion, gentle with people but fiercely protective from other dogs lol.

also don’t feel too bad Whammy . It is very rare for a dog to overcome a splenic tumor because most if not all the time it is discovered way too late. At least you gave her a fighting chance.

Thanks guys - this board and community really continues to surprise me everyday.

Dump yeah man she had to have been feeling it for awhile but just completely concealed it. She was kind of slowing down but I mean she had just turned 11, nothing suspicious about that.

At this point we’re going to celebrate her and bury her near the beach in a spot that’s always in the sun. Let’s get back to fawning over the pups, just cherish your time with them

Just catching up, very sorry for you losing your pup Whammy , she was beautiful.

This is our newest foster Shuri, 6 year old chocolate lab, poor thing had to have been a puppy mill momma for years, assuming they abandoned her when she couldn't produce anymore.
HW+, anemic, severely underweight, clearly has bite wounds and her skin looks like she'd been infested with fleas most of her life. It's been a month+ now, she is gaining weight like a beast, one of the happiest, goofiest, most loving pups I've ever fostered.
The day we picked her up:

Need Ts an Ps gang. My little guy Stu had another episode this morning related to his heart murmur. Legit thought he died in my arms. Forget what the tech said it was exactly but something where he wasn't getting enough blood to his brain and their body basically goes into a temporary shutdown. He came to in the car on the way to ER. Sounds like he's relatively stable now.

They did briefly today but he was fairly stable. 3 weeks ago he had his first horrible breathing episode he was in the oxygen room for 10 hours or so. Had some serious fluid in his lungs. Had some today but they gave him a shot of a diuretic I think to clear it.
Episode today was a syncope. Absolutely terrifying, I thought he was dead.

As long as his/her episodes dont occur too quickly they should be fine. Draining the fluid can be the worst task.

Figured, but I’ve seen a fair share of Brittanys that have it as well

most of the time I see it hit KCCS once they turn 7-8. Sometimes its earlier. Sometimes way later. I think I’ve only known one that hasnt had any heart issues at all.
