Just finished this show and I was wrong about the bolded part. The second season of this show is damn good. Like, really, really good. The first season is such a slow burn but ultimately it sets up the 2nd season fantastically. If you like criminal/political dramas I definitely recommend. Just know going in that it's slow going at first. If you stick with it, it's definitely worth it.

It's a real shame that it only lasted 2 seasons but upon reading the shows Wiki page, it was cancelled with some controversy. Apparently it originally aired on the CBC which is their public broadcasting station and was highly acclaimed but rumors are that the government or certain high ranking officials got it cancelled. There was a certain storyline that painted a bad picture for them.

Watched Nightstalker doc last night. Enjoyed but left wanting more on killer's backstory. Checked Wiki and found out everything I needed to know :donotwant:

Ramirez was born in El Paso, Texas, on February 29, 1960, the youngest of Julian and Mercedes Ramirez's five children.[4] His father Julián, a Mexican national and former Ciudad Juárez policeman who later became a laborer on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway,[5] was prone to fits of anger that often resulted in physical abuse.[6]

As a 12-year-old, Richard—or "Richie", as he was known to his family—was strongly influenced by his older cousin, Miguel ("Mike") Ramirez,[7] a decorated Green Beret combat veteran who often boasted of his gruesome exploits and abuses during the Vietnam War. He shared Polaroid photos of his victims, including Vietnamese women he had raped.[8] In some of the photos, Mike posed with the severed head of a woman he had abused.[9] Richard, who had begun smoking marijuana at the age of 10, bonded with Mike over joints and gory war stories.[10] Mike taught his young cousin some of his military skills, such as killing with stealth.[11] Around this time, Ramirez began to seek escape from his father's violent temper by sleeping in a local cemetery.[11]

Richard was present on May 4, 1973, when his cousin Mike fatally shot his wife, Jessie, in the face with a .38 caliber revolver during a domestic argument.[12] After the shooting, Richard became sullen and withdrawn from his family and peers. Later that year, Richard moved in with his older sister, Ruth, and her husband, Roberto, an obsessive "peeping Tom" who took Richie along on his nocturnal exploits.[13] Ramirez also began using LSD and cultivated an interest in Satanism.[14] Mike was found not guilty of Jessie's murder by reason of insanity and was released in 1977, after four years of incarceration at the Texas State Mental Hospital. His influence over Ramirez continued.[15][16]

The adolescent Ramirez began to meld his burgeoning sexual fantasies with violence, including forced bondage and rape.[17] While still in school, he took a job at a local Holiday Inn, where he used his passkey to rob sleeping patrons.[18] His employment ended abruptly after Ramirez attempted to rape a woman in her hotel room, before her husband returned to find them.[19] Although the husband beat Ramirez senseless at the scene, criminal charges were dropped when the couple, who lived out of state, declined to return to testify against him.[20]

Ramirez dropped out of Jefferson High School in the ninth grade.[21][22] At the age of 22, he moved to California, where he settled permanently.[23]

I mean, could there be a more surefire backstory for creating a serial killer? The father, then the cousin, then the BIL....fucking yikes.

Also crazy to see the connections between the events of the doc and the Vietnam War. Almost feels like the horrors of the war manifesting themselves at home

I think the first episode was 5% actual story and the rest was uninteresting interviews with the front desk lady, janitor, cop, a dumb British couple, and a book store employee that met her for a minute. The rest is her stupid tumblr diary posts.
