There is a flaw that will make itself apparent at some point.

If the Eagles are trading Wentz, that would seem to significantly decrease the chances of a QB getting to us at 7 to either draft or use as trade bait. It would seem to increase the odds that one of Chase or Sewell is on the board at 7, with Smith possibly being the fall back.

If the first six picks are 4 QBs and 2 WRs, I wonder whether we would take Sewell. It's not a huge need, but he would almost certainly be BPA and his strengths seem to fit with everything Campbell wants to be.

I put it in the Goff thread, but that Carolina offer works a lot better if that 5th is a 3rd, but I also think the Lions brain trust really likes Goff. Teddy does nothing for a team other than help get a better draft pick next year.

Agreed. I like the audacity of asking for him. Obviously never gonna happen, but you never know when a massive GM brain fart may happen/starts negotiations as high as possible.

Writers took that quote to hint that they might be planning to play V at guard over tackle this year.

If that's the plan, I think OT is very much in play at 7, whether it's Sewell or Slater. I would be fine with that, depending on what the board looks like.

McShay had a mock today where the top four picks were QBs, and the next two were Chase and Sewell. He gave us Smith at 7.

Who are you taking in that scenario? I can't wrap my head around Smith that high yet. We need WRs and I know how good he was at Bama. For some reason I lean against him and Waddle at 7, but I don't feel great about anyone else in that spot. Parsons is probably the best fit but I'm scared of the off field stuff. I think that's one of the reasons I kind of like Slater. He just seems like a safe bet to be good, with a chance to be great depending on the situation you put him in.

I am taking Waddle in that scenario, but I also am fine with Smith. This team has exactly one explosive athlete on offense, and that’s Swift. At some point you need to have speed somewhere else on the field. It just so happens both those guys are fast, and also awesome.

Waddle is really talented. I guess I'm just not sure what he is in comparison to other players of his size/skill set. I think the difference between Ja"Marr Chase and his day 2 equivalents is very large, for example. Waddle at 7 kind of feels like taking a TE that high on some levels because he has to be someone who isn't just an underneath "speed in space" guy. You kind of have to think he's some version of Antonio Brown to do it, IMO.

And maybe he is that good. That profile just makes me nervous that high, because if you pick him and he turns out to not be that level of guy beyond 10 yards, you were better off just waiting to day two and taking Eskridge or Amari Rodgers.

My guess at this point is that Lance is the guy. I think he fits everything the staff wants, and he fits perfectly in their timeline. I don’t believe we would sacrifice assets to move up for him though.

Brugler’s new mock has us trading down with Washington, picking up a 3 this year and an additional 1 next year. I would be down for that kind of move.

Trading down to 19, getting a next year's one, and still getting Owusu-Karamoah, seems too good to be true because it probably is. I wouldn't be shocked if we took him at 7 depending on how they'd view his skill set. You posted yesterday about the lack of explosive athletes. He would solve some of that.

Lord I hope Brad Holmes is willing to trade down and accumulate picks. Quinn making first round picks a couple minutes into their allotted time made me soooooo fucking angry.

I really don’t know why we can’t discuss Millen and Quinn in the same realm of abomination GMs. Quinn’s second round picks were more likely to not be nfl players after 2 seasons than to be in the league. Convincing ownership to fire Caldwell to hire his buddy and not have a HC search! At least Millen seems like a humble guy. I vote Quinn worst NFL GM in history of the league.

Quinn at least had a plan. It was a shitty plan mind you, but you knew what he was looking for. I think Millen just kind of picked guys with very little input from his staff and figured the coaches would make it work.

I think Millen and Quinn had opposite issues in a lot of ways. Millen famously ignored the concept of scheme and just randomly went out of got players. It was "we need a guard, let's sign that guy". That led to picks like Harrington and Mike Williams, and a bunch of dumb FA moves. Seemed like Quinn was the opposite and consistently valued fit over talent, which had similar results.

As bad as this roster is currently, I don't think it's close to being as bad as the one Millen left that went 0-16 in 08. That team had Calvin and no one else. That Mayhew/Schwartz took that team to the playoffs in three years with a legitimately talented team shows how not-difficult it really is in the NFL to turn things around within a few years if you have any clue what you're doing and decent QB play. Hell, by year 2 that team probably wins 8 games if Stafford didn't get hurt.

I think there is a conversation to be had, but Millen took a 9-7 team, bottomed it out, rebuilt it to 7-9 and then had the first 0-16 team in NFL history. Dude drafted Drew Stanton in the second round. His drafts were outright abominations outside of the first one (Backus, Raiola and Shaun Rogers), Calvin in 2007 and Cliff Avril in 2008. As hard as it is to believe, Quinn drafted more serviceable NFL players in 5 drafts than Millen did in 8.

The final roster in 2008 couldn't have won a game with God at QB.

Quinn had the luxury of having a franchise QB during his entire tenure. Millen can be blamed for never being able to find one but it takes a special level of incompetency to fail as badly as Quinn did given what he was handed over

Career completion pct. of 52.4, 20 tds - 24 ints.

Dan Orvlosky was a better QB than Drew Stanton on that roster, which also included Jon Kitna for a time, Drew Henson and a rapidly decaying Daunte Culpepper by the end.

Don't get us wrong; Quinn is a very bad GM.

But Millen was a historic disaster who had 8 years to built an 0-16 team with a roster entirely devoid of any talent outside of Roy Williams, Calvin, Avril, Raioloa and Backus This team has building blocks on the OL, TE and RB, and WR if they pay Golladay, and maybe in the secondary and on the DL.

Quinn was bad, but I think it's possible he could have possibly not been a train wreck as a GM if he hadn't hired Patricia. I'm not sure there's a coach Millen could have succeeded with, given how dysfunctional that whole thing seemed to be.

And I'm not exonerating or separating Quinn hiring Patricia from his performance. It's on him and it turned his tenure into a train wreck. Just saying I don't think he was as completely incompetent at all phases of GMing like Millen was.

Too many variables to compare the two on W/L records. If I had to choose between the two tomorrow, I’d choose Millen. Quinn drafts like a limp-dicked loser.

Quinn wasn’t bad drafting offensive players. Swift, Golladay, Hockenson, Decker, Ragnow, Jackson, Crosby, etc were all good picks.

He and Patricia have totally obliterated our defense with their draft picks though.

Not if they can do better via trade with a 2021 pick, which I think is possible. I've seen nothing on it anywhere, but I think there's a chance we could get something from Jacksonville for him. Ton of cap space, would probably like to add a WR with Lawrence coming in, they have seven picks in the first four rounds, and Bevell is the OC there.
