He only struck out 19 times more than Acuña did in 2019. (Of course it was in 140 fewer plate appearances.)
You could sign Marwin Gonzalez. Gives you a ton of flexibility and you can hope one of him/Riley/Goat hits. He sucked last year too though.
Hypothetical: Would you prefer AA signed Archer and an extra $4.5M to go to a bullpen arm over Smyly? Archer got $6.5 from the Rays, and before his Pittsburgh stint, was super highly regarded.
Smyly would be my vote as well. He's got too much upside, and the FO clearly thinks a lot of him (Granted, this is the same front office that thought a lot Tommy Milone). When the most interesting part of the Archer option is the extra $4.5 for a pen arm, it's probably not a great option.
Actually, this whole thing is if you believe in Smyly's 2020. Archer actually had a better ERA in 2019 (with 5 more IP).
i would solve our third base problem by inventing a time machine and transporting 23 year old chipper jones to present day
Give me the guy with upside. We know what Archer is at this point. With all the modern metrics we know Smyly's breaking ball is legit.
Agreed. If Smyly's 2020 is legit, it's a big deal. Archer's ceiling is a reliable 4/5 starter, which doesn't really move the needle.
there isnt a disagreement that can't be solved with a couple coors lights and morgan wallen on the jukebox
This Jones guy we signed yesterday might be ok. Sounds like he had dog shit luck last year. To Jones’ credit, he did post a much more encouraging 3.56 SIERA in Cincinnati, average 96 mph on his fastball and log impressive strikeout and walk percentages of 26.7 and 7.0, respectively. It didn’t help Jones’ cause that hitters victimized him for a .400 batting average on balls in play, but if he gets back to the majors and that figure returns closer to his career mark (.302), he could be a useful pickup for the Braves.
I know we wouldn’t have had room because of the tap dancing around the DH but I would’ve liked to acquire Benintendi. He’s a good player who went for nothing, which seems to be the theme this offseason, yet we still can’t part with our precious prospects.
The great man, Pete Moylan, just won the Australian Baseball League championship as the Melbourne Aces pitching coach.
we will win more than those dumb projections have us but this roster as it stands is not winning the east
God damn it I'm fucking jealous of the Padres. I hope they win the world series b/c we have no fucking shot
