This is quite good, and it’s being done tethered to Marc Staal

That's offensive dynamo Marc Staal to you, sir.

Marc Staal was awful at beginning of season, but he seems to be less awful lately. Haven't noticed too many glaring mistakes like he had early on

Maybe? I wouldn’t be too sure. Who are we adding this off-season to be that much better. Still a lot of holes to fill and Seider is the only likely prospect that is for sure ready. Although a couple more could be close.

You think Raymond makes the team next year?

I dont think Raymond starts in NHL next year, but may end there.

Maybe down the line, but not out of camp. I think Veleno and Berggren have a better shot, and I don’t think either of those are that likely.

Based on play this year I think Berggren has best shot. His numbers in same league quite a bit better than other two

This would be the year to take a goalie in the top 4-5 of draft. No top tier forwards, so worth the risk.

I’d still rather take a forward. There are solid goalies in the free agent market every year. On the cheap.

I get the goalie want though and would still be good w it.

This was mentioned on a Wings for Breakfast podcast I believe...

What about trading their first pick, say hypothetically #3 or #4 for Spencer Knight instead of drafting Wallstedt?

I’m not using that high of an asset (draft or trade) on a goalie ever but I do see some benefit to getting more data on Knight vs. the more unknown Wallstedt

Just depends if Knight is going to sign an ELC upon completion of the deal. There have been rumors he might play out his four year at BU and then sign somewhere as a FA. I give this a very small chance of happening, but if he hasn’t signed his ELC by this offseason, all bets are off.

Get two first and take Wallstedt around 10-15.

Wallstedt playing against professionals for two years vs Knight playing against kids. Why is there more data on Knight?

Knight was drafted #13 and hasn’t done anything to elevate his value from there. Using a #3 or #4 is really dumb.

In a deep draft lacking top end talent I'm not sure whose going to be trading up or giving up much to trade up. Always easy to say trade down buy you need someone on other end of the trade

It only takes one and with all the extra picks we have it makes it easier to make an amicable deal for both sides.

The Athletic has Luke Hughes as #1 prospect for 2021. Hopefully the draft gets postponed next season

His birthplace is listed as Canton, MI. Didnt know the family lived in Canton. Can't hate a guy from my home town

Channel 7 news interviewed him during the sports segment. He said he’s from Toronto, and moved here for hockey. They showed pictures of him wearing a leafs jersey as a kid.

Weird they showed him born in canton online. Who knows.

I’ve seen you mention this before maybe?? How are they getting a first round pick in the 10-15 range?

  22. hoss2183

    hoss2183 Well-Known Member

Knight has played and dominated almost 50 games in college as well as 10 or so in the WJC. That’s what I’m talking about. You have seen him play more than Wallstedt. I agree that it’s useful that Wallstedt has played in the SHL this year though.

We already have 3 second rounders and an extra third. Couple that with the assets we’ll acquire at the TDL. I think we can pretty easily get another first in that range with this draft class.

That’s completely expected for Knight. Dipietro did it. Jimmy Howard did it. He’s doing it against 18-22 year olds. Wallstedt is doing it against pros. 18-35 year olds. The third/fourth toughest league in the world. Whereas the NCAA isn’t top 10.

Could you trade all three of those second round picks for #10-12? It doesn’t seem like that has every happened in the draft but I genuinely don’t know what they are worth

  26. hoss2183

    hoss2183 Well-Known Member

    Yeah, I get that

I’m not doing the deal for Knight. I just saw it mentioned so I asked. I’m also not using major assets to draft a goalie. You can find goalies elsewhere for cheap.

26 straight PP without a goal and really not many chances is quite remarkable. That's almost a complete games worth of hockey with an extra man and not scoring

Watching NHL Overtime and tonight is the 2nd time in the last week that they've called a victory over the Wings a "big win" and I just assume it's because they have to fill that space with some sort of analysis. Nothing else makes sense.

It's weird how this stuff happens in hockey and there's very little mention of it anywhere as far as the media goes (at least from what I see). I can't even imagine the uproar if this happened in one of the other three sports. If a baseball team was trying to send down a pitcher after every start to fuck with his service time, for example, the media would go nuts (and they should). I know it's said his is for cap reasons, but this is really shitty to do to any player, let alone someone who has earned a role with the big club.

It isn't any different than an MLB team leaving a guy in the minors until June to delay his arb/FA eligibility. Just sillier in the mechanism.

National announcers hate the Wings. Especially this crew. I'm sick of the Mantha talk. He had a rough stretch to start after a year off and I think he's looked fine lately, Especially considering who he's playing with
