Yes it is. His offense is broken and he is too stubborn to adapt.

Was it broken because he didn't have the right personnel or because it's just a bad offense?
Neither is good, since the first means he can't recruit, just curious, I haven't been paying attention to Auburn since our bowl game.

It's a bad offense. He's recruited well enough to be able to have a better offense than he's had.

he definitely sucks at recruiting imo but if you surround him with good recruiters plus bags like auburn had they can keep the recruiting efforts afloat

“We’re going to get a QB coach that has a history of developing QBs” so no one you you’ve ever hired before because the only QB you developed was by developing the $80k for Scam Newton’s dad

The advantage to his offense was creating mismatches by going no huddle and not allowing the D to sub. Can’t really do that the way he was doing it before. When you take that away his playbook is complete garbage.

Also we under recruited Oline for at least 5 years. His clock management was horrendous in key situations. He refuses to use a TE at all so don’t bother recruiting any. Also if you like slant routes he is the wrong guy for you as well.

He will hire guys that can recruit. He won’t develop QB’s at all. Lastly he will pick a favorite RB and run him into the ground until injuries and CTE force him to go to someone else.

Gus is gonna schedule Bama and beat Saban bc that's all he can do.

Or he'll schedule #Arkansas Razorbacks and beat them all 3 times. Once at home. Twice in Little Rock

Was broken for a few reasons. He failed to recruit quality OL, particularly any OTs. And Gus approved any offer given out to any recruit. So he has his hands deeply involved in the offensive recruiting. Was broken because he struggled to develop QBs within the system. Every QB that spent multiple years starting for him never improved significantly and many regressed. It's also broken because Gus is extremely rigid on what he does. He's almost computer-like. He takes tangible info like down and distance, hash placement, time of the game, play sequence, and calls a play based on what the formula spits out. And that's the play. There is almost no freedom from the QB or OL to make adjustments to changes from the defense. All changes come from the sidelines. And EVERYTHING about his offense is predicated on being able to run the football. If he can run the ball on his opponent, it opens up his entire offense. But if teams can slow down the run and force his offense to pass to keep the chains moving with short and intermediate passes, the offense is dead in the water.

I fully expect Gus's offense to look like gangbusters the first season or two and to make parts of this post seem ridiculous. But in time (assuming he's there for an extended stay), defenses will adjust to his schemes, his OL recruiting and QB development will stagnate, and things will become stale and unimaginative and forced. Then, it becomes a really frustrating brand of football to watch. He's going to recruit skill positions well. He's going to have some exciting plays and games. And with the local talent plus the talent already on the roster, I think he'll do really well next year. Just be prepared for inexplicable frustration at times with him.

I can't imagine a better hire they could've made. I think it's a great hire for them. And I truly hope Gus can change and adapt his offense to be revolutionary again. I really like Gus as a person, and the players will love him as well. He's great in that regard. He just failed to adapt to the world around him at Auburn, and he got stale and couldn't overcome that.

This is as good of a hire as UCF could have made based on the timing. Unlike the SEC, I feel like being at UCF should give Gus an advantage of talent within the conference assuming he can still hire good recruiters. Just like the rest of the thread has said, do not expect a single player to improve under him. They are as good on day 1 of freshman year as they are as seniors. For the extremely talented guys (Cam, Kerryon) this is not an issue. Gus hired a great DC in Kevin Steele that did develop a lot on that side of the ball. If he fails to hire coaches that develop, he will find a way to lose 4-5 games every year. 3 of those losses will be when he is favored. Gus is a wonderful OC when his QB can run and when his running game works. When he can't establish the run, not a damn bit of his playbook works. You will be able to tell how the game will go within the first two drives. If the scripted plays work, he might hang 60 on the other team. If they don't work, he either can't or refuses to adjust and it is painful to watch. Good dude. Nice enough guy. Won't be banging prostis. Won't embarrass you off the field, but will eventually embarrass you on the field.
