This is me right now. My buddy down the street has a portable gas generator and does this. This event shows me that relying on Texas to keep basic utility services going is foolish. Not looking forward to when they fail to keep natural gas flowing.

My Lady friend asked me where the outdoor broom was. Without paying much attention I told her. 15 minutes later my ring door bell detected motion. I go to check it out and she is trying to sweep 10" of snow out of the drive way. Granted we don't have a snow shovel because OKC doesn't usually get enough snow to matter but this definitely made my morning.

Unless you are in El Paso I'm reading? Time to maybe rethink tying back into the national grid?

Where i live outside Philly we have a lot of trees so major rains, snows, etc. we can lose power due to downed lines. Our house has a 48kw Kohler whole home generator that runs on natural gas and that kicks on when this happens. Previous owner installed it. Complete peace of mind always.

Which button on my computer do I push to do just this? Or do I have to make a phone call. Not quite sure that I, as an individual, can bypass the electrical grid I live in and get mine from out-of-state. But if you could give me instructions I will do just that.

They get power from everywhere just like everyone else

It can tie in but does not have to. ERCOT is being quiet other than to say that it is the fault of energy producers failing to meet recommendations met 10 years ago to weatherize facilities and to blame building codes and infrastructure that do not meet the demands required for an cold weather event such as this.

As to if they did opt to tie into other grids and why not if they didn’t when an emergency became apparent, hopefully that all plays out in the upcoming investigation and measures are taken to put weight behind their recommendations as well as mission and goal.

So like a complete overhaul or disbandment if they can not effectively ensure what their name implies, “Electric Reliability Council of Texas.”

I'm not sure what is sufficient and what isn't
All I know is ercot does get power from all over the country and does send it out to all over as well

it doesn't appear that's true. that's not what this article says. being tied in is for emergencies.
I'm sure they procure energy from all over the country, but that's not the same as distribution

    That's me currently
We have had terrible power thus very little heat since Sunday, but had water

Woke up this morning to a trickle coming from the faucet and have had solid power for 40 minutes now

No Water is much more of an issue

Warming up here. Still 20° below freezing but the first time in a bit we didn't start the day in the negatives. Supposedly above freezing on Friday. With most of my clients and colleagues out of power not a lot of work to do so working on my bathroom remodel on this free vacation day.

Looks like I just got a text telling me that our city's water usage is above the forecasted capacity. They are requesting emergency conservation. If we can make it through today, we should be ok as I think its supposed to warm up tomorrow almost above freezing.

So the power outages here apparently fried something on my ecobee
Display comes up but the touch screen doesn't respond and it doesn't seem to be connecting to the wifi
The unit kicked on and is heating
Talked to ecobee customer support, they ran me through some tests, sounds like I gotta replace it
They gave me a discount code since it's been 5 years and I'm past warranty

Thankful to have heat, first time since Sunday,, but I can't tell what's going on temp/setting wise and it's starting to seem warm in here like maybe it's just calling for heat to be running and not paying attention to the temps

Maybe it's just that we haven't had heat for so long it feels extra warm

Started an insurance claim cause of this and my fridge, I'm not sure with all the outages, but it's been 6+ hours and I'm not sure it's working right yet

Haven't made it to trying the washer, dryer, dishwasher yet cause we have super low water pressure and I haven't made it through all the tvs

So my schedule ecobee had been rebooting almost constantly since this cold spell began. I was able to determine that it was a result of the furnace overheating and cutting power to the thermostat while it cooled. I pulled my filters and reduced the cuton temperature for a day and we seem to be working well now. Talked to a buddy who does HVAC and he says I probably Need to have my coil cleaned and go with lower filtration filters. No sure if this is what's happening with you but maybe. Either way always take the replacement.

    You have an irrigation system?
It looks like some sort of back check device and if it's next to (I'm assuming you mean parallel, not in line with) your water line (meter I'm assuming) I think it may be the backflow prevention for your irrigation

I had that problem with my nest when a lizard walked across a couple terminals and shorted out the whole system. It would kick on the AC or Heat and just let it run non stop.

Do you have a meat thermometer? Bring it in the room and open it up to see if it can give you a temp. I used my thermopen the past two days to keep an eye on the temps when the power was out.

As someone who traded lumber up until a few months ago, this blows my mind and is absolutely a record. Just a few months ago, Lumber was consistently around $400-$500 a contract. The funny part of it is that while there is a correlation between actual lumber prices and the Futures market, Futures are primarily driven by speculators and not by hedgers within the industry. I would guess that roughly only 15% of contract holders are companies that are in the lumber business.

If I had to guess, I would bet railcar shortages because of the weather in Texas is fueling the recent run up. On the flip side, consumption is dropping like a rock there too.

    Yep

and don’t forget about the orders that HD and Lowe’s will be making this week. Everyone on my NextDoor was suggesting heading there for 2x4s to burn instead of firewood when they couldn’t find it when the power was out.

Then add in any repairs from busted pipes and we are going to catch up quick.

Consumption is gonna go crazy next week.

Looking at the Duromax XP12000EH version and they are back ordered for months. Luckily they have a couple similar models they have in stock according to the manufacturer.

Now I need to find an electrician and to decide how many days worth of fuel I will need to store. I feel like a prepper and am not sure if I should be proud of ashamed.

We had crazy ice storms in Oregon over the past 5 years that knocked out power. In some rural areas for nearly a month. Basically anyone who experienced that now justified $10k to pay for one of these. Instantly kicks on if power goes out.
