Probably, but he'd probably just try to play through it, hit horribly, and then ask us to give him credit for how tough he was on the way to a 80 wRC+.
I really hope he gets 3000 and 500 this year and hangs it up. Or has gotten into that Ortiz-grade HGH and become not awful. Is there a less-revered future Hall of Famer than Miggy? He won a fucking triple crown, but nobody in Detroit would be sad if he retired. It doesn't help that's he's a mess of a person, and if he wasn't he'd probably still be beloved.
I'd be fine adding Porcello. He's a real pitcher who has pitched and won big games and would help put a better product on the field in '21. Just release Urena.
Haven't read any projected stuff from any writers so maybe this is the same as what they're putting out there, but here would be my guess at the Opening Day 26... C - Ramos, Rogers IF - Cabrera, Candelario, Schoop, W Castro, Paredes, Goodrum, H Castro OF - Grossman, Jones, Mazara, Reyes SP - Turnbull, Boyd, Fulmer, Urena, Mize, Skubal RP - Norris, Alexander, Soto, Jimenez, B Garcia, Cisnero, Farmer Jones, CF Grossman, LF Candelario, 1B Cabrera, DH Mazara, RF Schoop, 2B Ramos, C Paredes, 3B Castro, SS I have no clue what the line-up looks like. I would dump Harold Castro, but I would have done that 2 years ago and he's still here. Barring something unforeseen, seems like that's your infield unless they play Cabrera a lot at 1B. If that happens, my guess is they keep a different 5th OF (Cameron or Stewart, probably). I don't see the Baddoo kid making the team as a rule 5. I'm guessing they keep 13 pitchers, with one of Mize or Skubal starting the season in the pen due to off days until they need the 6th guy.
Looking at the 40 man roster, it really is infuriating to think we're still this bad going into Avila's 6th season. For us to not have more high end talent at the upper minors/big league level going into year 6 of a GM's regime is absurd. You read over the 40 man and the back half is better than it used to be, but there's basically no difference between #7 and #34. They're all the same. The position guys are possible 1-2 win guys who might be average regulars if it works. The starting pitchers outside the top tier guys are all maybe #4 starters. The bullpen guys are all maybe 7th inning set up men.
Cabrera should be batting 7th. Don’t care about any of this pride shit. He’s a washed up 38 year old player, that has a negative WAR the last 4 years. If his name were Michael Smith and had same production as him last 4 years, he’d be out of baseball
I think Fetter will be very good for the pitchers. No idea on the field players, who are all seemingly cut from the same, low-OBP cloth.
Look at the pitching depth in the organization from Low A to AA ball. There is nobody worth a shit on any of those teams starting rotations.
Avila got his wish. Now he can keep the kids in the minors. Can’t wait for 2022 when we have 6 kids in the top 25. Gonna be another record.
Sad thing is, he’s probably our best pitcher. Boyd will get the opening day start just because he has been here forever Boyd Teheran Turnbull Urena Fulmer Mize, Skubal, and Manning are all starting at AAA now. With all the off days to start the season, they don’t even need a 5th starter until middle of April, and who knows if they switch to a. 6 man rotation. Good news is Urena, and Fulmer suck ass, so the kids will likely get a chance at some point.
if you’re confused at home the TQS, or Tobias Quality Start, is five innings and five earned runs BUT you exit the lead
He will probably be our Ace by default though. We are keeping all of our top pitching prospects in the minors so they can maintain their prospect status. Our GM has a clause in his contract where he gets $250k per prospect in the MLB Pipeline Top 100. We currently have 5, and two of them are close to graduating.
He throws upper 80s heat with his 2 seamer and 4 seamer and can hit 91 with like 4 pitches scattered across the first 3 innings on a good day. His second and best pitch is a slider and it’s pretty good on a good day but doesn’t really fool anyone anymore because he throws it as an obvious ball as his command has decreased. His change up is decent but when you can’t throw low to mid 90s anymore, it loses efficacy. He gives up a lot of bombs and when he’s bad, he’s really bad. Last year he was awful though I believe it may have been attributed to an injury. Still has an elite pickoff move for a right hander and very little injury history before last year. Gave us 175+ INN like 7 years in a row and went 200+ twice. Still somehow only 30. Tobias would sleep with him if afforded the opportunity
I'm going to hit peak levels of sports sadness when Al sends Torkelson and Green to low A ball to start the season to make sure they don't skip any levels, Mize is sent down to Toledo to start the year to make sure everything is tuned up while Julio Teheran is getting shelled every 6 days.
I'm really glad spring training is starting, but I'm not really looking forward to watching the Tigers play baseball.
Haven't they all but confirmed torkelson is starting in West Michigan and Greene in Erie? Honestly I'll take both in WM if we are allowed to go watch games
I don't know what they're going to do with Torkelson. Greene I've seen it suggested likely starts in WM because Avila doesn't want to skip levels of his development.
I just realized the only guys the Tigers have signed past this year are Miggy and Grossman, with Grossman on a 2 year deal and Miggy with effectively 3 years left. Obviously lots of guys under team control or arbitration eligible - the only free agents after this season are Norris, Wilson Ramos, Schoop, Mazara and Urena (and Teheran on a minor league deal).
