For the love of god people, remove the spa from freeze protection. I have to go out in this crap because actuators are failing/valves freezing.
Wait. Are you in Oklahoma as well? Shoot get one more and we can start us a Gator Club. Also following this thread as looking to add a pool at the place were looking to build in medicine park.
So my power has been off and on the past couple hours. It’s back on and the pool ain’t moving. That’s gotta be a bad sign right?
Rolling blackouts are upon us. If you did not turn your pool heater on, you are going to be at a huge risk of your equipment freezing up, if it has not already. It will start with the valves. If you are trying to keep your equipment up and running and have not winterized it yet, you are playing a dangerous game. Ideally, you would kill the power at breaker or disconnect to equipment when power is lost. Then when restored, first see if you can turn all valve handles. If so, go ahead and restore power to equipment. If not, try to drain equipment immediately.
Time to bundle up. You will need some channel locks (large and small. Text me pics of equipment and I will put arrows on all the places you are going to want to try and remove plugs and so on.
my pool has a system that runs the water/waterfall to avoid freezing, should this be fine in a rolling blackout?
If you are losing power and have not been heating the pool, no. If you have been running your heater, it might be okay, depending on how long power is out.
My neighbors pool has been iced over since last night. Due to snow accumulation you can no longer see where the pool boundaries are. On a scale of 1-10 how fucked are they?
If it is just the pool iced and equipment is still running that is pretty normal. May experience some tile damage and minor plaster damage if it gets thick enough. If the equipment was still full of water and no longer running, he is going to be pretty fucked with that.
Also, checked my “pool” 2 hours into power outage. My pipes were still warm to the touch thanks to heating it. No risk to equipment damage. Damn it feels good to be a gangster.
So my buddy texted me this pic of his water feature. a.tramp would you suggest peeing on it, or maybe a hairdryer?
I was early on the last message but it is for real now SPP entered level 3 and will begin rolling blackouts
Just about every wholesale supplier in Texas already has empty shelves from this storm. There is little ability currently to have the shelves filled any time soon due to an already depleted supply line due to record 2020 sales. Some are not going to have their pools online until after summer starts. And that is even going to be after companies offer used parts off of equipment that has been inspected for damage and salvaged parts used. This is wild and it has not even started.
For those that have busted pumps or other equipment that can't be fixed for months, are people just going to drain their pools? Just wondering if I need to buy a skateboard
Not sure draining is a great option considering we are entering spring and pools float here easily. I will know more about game plan next week at this time as cleaning maintenance & structural issues are outside of what I focus on. But I am pretty sure a game-plan for best practice is getting formulated.
a.tramp is there a pool equipment guy message board somewhere you are a member of to bounce ideas and get help from?
No, just talk to people in the business here in DFW. I work with a lot of different companies that have people in them that have seen about everything there is in the pool world.
Like a good boy I listened to tramp and left my heater running, pool is in tip top shape. Can I turn heater off now or should I wait until tomorrow? Temps will get into the teens overnight but after that should be fine
You should be able to shut off now. Just make sure your pump runs tonight. Would feel pretty silly to face-plant 1’ before the finish line.
Installed a 8x14 hottub/spool a few months ago and it's turning hair green. Like, a blonde haired kid will have green in their hair the next day. I had the water tested and it has a high copper content. I think it's from the new pool equipment, any recommendations on the right product to use to remove copper from water and how much I should use? Pool porn:
Is your chemistry okay otherwise? I would be concerned you are stripping the copper out of the heat exchanger on the heater. As far as a chemical to help, Zack Zedalis might know. My focus is on equipment.
Or as a.tramp said, if your pH spent any time below 6.8 you could've easily leached copper out of your heat exchanger.
Also, given how small that pool is, is exchanging 50% of the water 2 or 3 times feasible? May be easier than a sequestrant that you'll need to keep adding as they do wear off over time.
So a.tramp how are pvc supplies looking? So far I can see a couple spots where the pipes cracked open. I am hopeful that is the extent of it.
Same issue here. Looks like one has drained my spa and I also may have lost a plastic jet cover in the spa. Really hoping my other stuff is ok
I will know tomorrow morning where the pvc & fittings stand. Equipment & valves, fucked for foreseeable future through wholesalers, not sure on retail suppliers.
For real, just spent 2 hours going through my pile of stuff that I was going to take to the dump. Stripping usable parts to set aside. People are going to be having 3 options for repairs. 1. Do repair/replacement as normal IF items are available. 2. Purchase used equipment or parts with no warranty. 3. Put deposit down on equipment, will supply used parts if available to get equipment operational and wait until new equipment comes in. Yes, there will be normal repair costs for putting used parts on. I am not supplying my time for free. If they do not like those options, I am going to suggest they talk to their state representative and demand Texas has the ability to keep the lights on.
Same one you told me to get replaced last year. In spa mode hot tub slowly drains. Have to turn valve on right slightly past 180 degrees to offset, which isn't efficient for heating hot tub and possibly bad (fuck if I know). You told me to replace valve on left. The shitty stone the original builder used (who is now shockingly out of business for cutting corners) is just deteriorating into pool, haven't wanted to fix anything until that was addressed. Have been trying to hire someone since last January and finally have someone starting tomorrow
