Tiger has proven he’s not human many times before. He’ll do it again

Gonna throw out a positive "butterfly effect" scenario. This accident drives home the point (that likely would've taken years to accept/admit) that his career is over. Tiger takes the MJ approach. Rather retire than play at a lesser level for long enough to impact legacy. So retired Tiger then shifts his full competitive spirit and focus into his son. This added time (years otherwise spent chasing that high of being great again) focusing on Charlie puts him over the top to actually be the next great golf prodigy. All these years waiting for "the next Tiger" but Mcilroy, Spieth, etc. falling short. Tiger's accident solidifies the series of events that lead to golf finally getting "the next Tiger" which crazy enough his Tiger's own son. Tragedy to triumph. A Tom Rinaldi wet dream.

That's all probably bright spot/wishful thinking though. Personally don't think Tiger is the type to stop till he can't physically make it out on the course. Plus, the allure of an all-time comeback story is too much for Tiger to pass up. Likely still has plenty of time yet set aside for his own legacy.

Maybe this ends 5-7 years from now with Tiger winning one more at a Major and becoming the oldest player to win a major. He still falls short of Jack and doesn’t go down as the greatest ever but at least he’s the best this generation has ever seen.

  14. The year is 2029....Its opening day at Death Valley, and the stadium is filled to its 126,843 capacity. All in orange. All waving orange flags. They cheer for their Tigers, celebrating the back to back national championships, and 4 out of the last 8 national championships. They are a dynasty. The media speculates "is this the greatest team ever?" Clemson, synonomous with "college football", is the envy of every other program in America.

The Four Horseman, Cherone Peak, Martravias Bryant, Mike Bellamy and of course Sammy Watkins, are in attendance. Dabo has always credited them with being the Spark that turned around Clemson’s fortune. Though Clemson never actually won a national title while they were there, the 3 ACC championships they won put Clemson squarely back in the mix for the national title hunt from their perch on top of the ACC.

Watkins, being Clemson's first Heisman Trophy winner and first #1 pick was greeted with roar, many still wearing his retired #1 jersey. Bellamy, a two-time NFL MVP and first ballot Hall of Famer raised his hand to the crowd, and nearly blinded all from the shine of his 4 super bowl rings. Peake and Bryant recently retired from the NFL as annual pro-bowlers and defining Clemson's newreputation as "Wide Reciever U".

Just beside the four horseman, are three former Tiger walk-ons: Will Swinney, Drew Swinney, and Clay Swinney. Will is now an assistant coach at Alabama. Drew, asuccessful attorney in Atlanta. And Clay, who defied the odds and is now a starting wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans. They stand there, in awe. Tears flowing from their face as they think back to all the practices, hours in the weight room, and tough victories over ACC foes. They are all champions. It has all come to this. This one moment. They know this is what they worked for. They know what it feels like to achieve your dream.

Then...an announcement is made, and a banner is dropped...

The West Zone will be renamed...the Dabo Swinney Zone. Suddenly, 126,843 chant "Dabo! Dabo!" at the top of their lungs, and thank God that they were patient with Dabo. He asked for patience. He delivered.

That is a stupid comparison. Didn't say MJ retired to focus on his kids. And simply from stories/reports, it seems Tiger and MJ's levels of parental involvement are a lot different. And there was never even brief hope of MJ's kids being stars because the never showed signs. Charlie is scoring eagles on Par 5s on his own and playing well above the level of other 11-year olds. So, unlike MJ's kids, he's shown at least a glimpse of being a special talent.

All that said, it was just a hypothetical anyway. And I said it's unlikely to happen.

Said the same in my last part of that post. But you're dead on to mention the overbearing Earl approach. Even more reason it's just a "bright side" hypothetical.

Lol guess I should wait for everyone to move past the anger stage of grief first. Still too soon to try to find potential positives out of a shitty situation.

Do we know yet if Tiger is in the clear re: keeping his legs? Never mind playing golf or walking. I thought the injuries he sustained were significant enough where we wouldn't know for a bit? Did I mishear that?

They stabilized the injuries from a vascular standpoint. He’ll require more surgeries but as long as there aren’t infections or further complications in future surgeries that shouldn’t be a worry.

Tigers son being a good golf player would bring the audience back to the PGA the same way people flocked to golf when tiger was in his prime. PGA is hoping Charlie is a great golf player.

Tiger is already the greatest ever. Gauging it by majors only is incredibly dumb when Tiger has won 9 more tournaments. That’s like saying Mickey Lolich is better than Cy Young because he had more WS wins.

I struggle with the Charlie factor, it would be cool but my lord that kid wouldn’t be able to breath and I really believe Tiger probably wants to avoid so many of the pitfalls & general attention that being Tiger’s kid would bring on.

While Charlie appears to be a very good golfer for his age, is blessed with superior genes, and will have access to the best coaches ... it’s still much-more statistically likely he won’t ever be a star.

Kid could end up on the tour but there are thousands of Charlie’s out there already. For every example you give me of a former athlete having a kid that becomes a stud I can probably give you thousands who didn’t (and likely, probably a couple of their own kids who didn’t).

I hope (we won’t, let’s face it) we allow Charlie to develop at his own pace and let the chips fall where they do.

To play Devil’s Advocate, this is also unfair to Jack as he never played the type of schedules Tiger played in his career. He made it a point to take regular stretches of time off to be with his family. Not to mention the comparative competition the two faced during stretches of winning lots of tournaments.

The argument is really not clear cut either way. The two have very strong arguments for being the GOAT.

Poor comparison, and I even agree that Tiger>Jack. But baseball being a team sport and golf being an individual sport makes that comparison not work.

Counterpoint to the majors - outside of wins, Jack’s resume blows Tiger out of the water looking at top 2, 3, and 5 finishes. Those numbers are actually astonishing.

Jack isn’t exactly the type to play second fiddle to anyone. He has a pretty high view of himself, for better or worse. So I don’t agree with your second point either.

I think the most Jack would do is claim Tiger is the most talented golfer of all time. Which I think its without a doubt true. Unfortunately, he was his own worst enemy in terms of creating a resume head and shoulders above anyone else.

You missed the point of the comparison. Winning more major tournaments is only meaningful with all else being equal. It’s far from the only criterion for greatness, as was implied by the quote I posted.

For the record, if you put a gun to my head I’d lean toward Tiger being the GOAT. I’m just in disagree over it being as cut and dry as many Tiger fans seem to think. It’s a very nuanced argument, mostly due to Tigers long stretches of not playing.

Jack publicly endorsed Trump and complained of his (trump's) unfair media treatment. I would assume mainly because of his business relationship with the Trump courses. Jack sucks. and I highly doubt Jack has ever said that Tiger is better than him.
