Anyone read it? 2/3s through and best book I've read in several years. Could change as I finish but amazing character development. Backdrop is a small town high school hockey team. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33413128-beartown
I agree, character development is unreal. Read both books this month and cannot stress enough on how good they are. Excellent choice for book clubs.
I'm about ~80% through. This guy does a great job with dialogue. I'm getting real-life mad at some of these characters.
Been wanting to read this forever and saw it’s a TV show now. Started it before I watch the show. It’s as good as advertised. I cant put it down. Stayed up way too late reading last night and probably will again tonight.
So good. 10/10. Will read Us against You next Spoiler I was seriously stressing that Maya would kill Kevin. I really didnt want that for her Also watched the first episode last night. They changed so much it makes me mad lol. Still will finish it
After watching two eps of the show (rant) Spoiler Peter just moved his family to Beartown to take over the senior team. He’s a dick and refuses to coach them because they suck and demands to take over the junior team. David gets pushed out as HC Kevins parents arent absentee at all. His dad is an over bearing hockey dad. His mom is a step mom on the show. Ana is just a new friend Maya met as the new kid in town. what the fuck?!?! How are they going to tell this story? All the characters are different.
Started Us Against You last night - Through Ch 6 Spoiler I was ready to stop reading when it looked like Benji was stalking the girls to harm them. Then he gave them the island.
Just started this, few chapters in. Hooked. The first chapter was one of the best openings to a book I’ve seen in a while.
Bout 2/3 done with it. Can’t get over how good the writing is, how vivid the characters are, and how engrossing the plot is. Love this book.
Spoiler "Amat, Zacharias, Bobo, and Benjamin. Two of them will be playing professionally. One will be a dad. One will be dead." Zach end up hanging himself like he's thought about maybe? Edit * maybe I need to read Us Against You. Didn't realize it was a sequel.
Reading this next month. Was gonna read it this month but then Project Hail Mary was getting 10/10s everywhere.
Should I start Us Against You directly after I finish or is it ok to move onto Project Hail Mary and circle back later?
Disagree w skipping it. It’s a good book, just not as good as Beartown. I’d read PHM first because it’s awesome and to break up the heaviness of the two Backman novels
Finished last week. Such a good book. Looking forward to reading Us Against You after I get through a couple others first. It’s recommended to skip the TV series right?
I didnt finish the show, and it's only 5 eps. They changed so much and it did a horrible job of ethos of the book
Half way through The Winners. It’s just as good as the other two in the series so far. Backman is good at making you feel things. Ugh
Finished. Really enjoyed it. Backman is a great writer. Small quibble. Spoiler It didn’t ruin the book or anything but it really bothered me he changed benji Kevin relationship. I dont like at all that benji had romantic feelings for Kevin. Everything is more impactful when Benji was so loyal out of platonic friendship. Like he is w everyone else he is fiercely loyal to.
Watched A Called Ove Otto They did a really good job w the movie and was pretty faithful to the book. Evoked the same feels as the book
