you might have a better basketball coach than we do right now. But hard to beat our campus. Everyone always says Pepperdine is amazing, nah the location is great. The campus itself is pretty meh. UVA might be the only real competition we have

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who is thinking this, so forgive me, but I feel like it might make a lot of sense for Indiana to see if Brad Stevens is interested.

    Just my humble opinion.

I think they’ll reach out to both scott drew and Chris beard, but both will say no. I could really see them trying to hire Matta too if he’s healthy and wants to coach again. They’d likely have to find a replacement in another 4 or 5 years, but hopefully the program would be in a better position to attract a younger coach.

I know you prefaced this with "It'd never happen" but I feel like we see these types of suggestions every time a languishing blue blood job comes available (basically UCLA or IU). I don't see why any proven, Tier 1 coach would take one of those jobs. Perhaps you get a pay bump, but you're basically guaranteed to get fired at IU unless you blow it out of the water. Just not worth the risk if you've already reached the pinnacle and already worshipped as a god where you are.

The clouds have been gathering for quite some time at Indiana. They got more ominous as the Hoosiers dropped seven of their last eight games to play their way out of the NCAA Tournament. And they were only going to get darker as Indiana faced the specter of losing its best player, sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, to the NBA, with no discernible influx of talent on the horizon. The question of what the school would do with coach Archie Miller, who was hired four years ago, has loomed not only over the program but also the entire sport. Indiana hasn’t been great in a while, but it is a big, big job. An opening there could really start the dominos tipping.

The main question with Indiana was whether to eat Miller’s $10 million buyout now, or wait another year for it to drop to $3 million. On Monday, Indiana decided it would cost too much to ride out the storm and decided to let Miller go. The coaching carousel just got a lot more interesting.

Whom should the school hire? Of course, athletic director Scott Dolson will want to aim high, but he has to be careful not to repeat the mistakes of recent sloppy searches — UCLA’s leaps to mind — that featured schools going after all kinds of high-end candidates only to be humiliated by a very public stream of rejections. That is the promise and the peril of the road ahead. If Dolson gets this one wrong, the next time Indiana shows a coach the door, Dolson could follow him out.

    Job evaluation
Indiana fans don’t like to hear this, but this program’s perception has been far ahead of its reality for quite some time. Folks pine for the days of Bobby Knight without acknowledging that a) Knight coached his last game there 21 years ago and b) the Hoosiers didn’t get past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament during Knight’s last five years. At the time, that was considered a noticeable decline, but it was Knight’s behavior, not his coaching record, that did him in.

Since then? Well, Indiana did have that surprising run to the 2002 NCAA championship as a No. 5 seed under Mike Davis, but Davis was forced out three years later. Kelvin Sampson flamed out quickly and was replaced by Tom Crean. It took Crean a few years to get things going, but then he took IU to three Sweet 16s in five years. When he failed to reach the tourney the following season, he too was shown the door.

Now Miller has met the same fate after failing to get IU into the NCAA Tournament in his four years. The Hoosiers were squarely on the bubble when the 2020 tourney got canceled. Very few programs in college basketball can match the brand awareness of Indiana. Those candy cane striped pants still have some magic in them. More important, the school sits on a hotbed of schoolboy talent. Kids inside the state still dream of growing up to play for the Hoosiers, and there are plenty of great players in the Midwest and beyond. The problem is, there’s also plenty of competition. The Big Ten has never been stronger, and television exposure opportunities have never been greater at all levels. Can Indiana beat the Michigans, Michigan States and Kansases of the world for top talent? Or is this program destined to remained mired in mediocrity, forever devouring its coaches as they fail to live up to unreasonable expectations? Time will tell.

    Indiana’s call list
    (in alphabetical order)

Steve Alford, head coach, Nevada. Alford is on his fourth Division I head coaching job and he has had his share of critics of the years, but he is still revered in the state of Indiana. He was the schoolboy legend from New Castle who delivered a national championship for Knight in 1987. He wouldn’t be a home run hire, but he might serve as a clean single if the school needs a fallback. The question is whether Alford, 56, would want the hassle at this stage of his career. He has a nice lifestyle and plenty of job security in Reno, and just the right amount of pressure. He would need some convincing to come home, which says a lot about where Indiana’s program is right now.

Chris Beard, head coach, Texas Tech. There are more than 4.5 million reasons why this is highly unrealistic. That’s Beard’s salary in Lubbock, believed to be the fifth-highest in the country. It’s difficult to imagine Indiana could come close to matching that, much less exceeding it, much less also paying his buyout after also paying Miller’s buyout, so it would require a very strong desire on Beard’s part to lure him to Bloomington. There’s no doubt, however, it would go over well with the fan base. Besides his hardscrabble persona and stellar record, Beard brings a strong connection to Knight, whom he worked for as an assistant for 10 years at Texas Tech.

John Beilein, former head coach, Michigan. If you’re an Indiana fan, this seems almost too good to be true. Sure, Beilein is 68, but he could still have a good five to seven years left in him. Yes, Beilein flamed out with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the NBA is a bad fit for him. He has won huge wherever he has coached in college, and he has done so without needing a bunch of five-star recruits and McDonald’s All-Americans on his roster. Beilein is unmatched in his ability to identify players who would excel in his system, and then coaching the hell out of them. Who else could pluck Duncan Robinson out of Division III and send him on his way to the NBA? The biggest upside here is that Beilein is unemployed and doesn’t have the luxury of biding his time for the perfect fit. And this is just about as perfect a fit as he’ll find.

Scott Drew, head coach, Baylor. Valparaiso is a lot closer to Chicago than Bloomington, but it’s still in the state of Indiana. Drew grew up there watching his dad, Homer, coach the Crusaders. He went to Butler and spent 10 years coaching at Valpo (the last as head coach) before leaving for Baylor in 2003. Drew has done amazing things at Baylor. He has plenty of dough and all the job security he could want. The question is, at the age of 50, would he be content having this be his final job? Is Baylor, which is considered a football school, prepared to make the requisite investments in basketball to keep Drew in the fold? And then the big question: Does Drew have such a deep feeling in his heart for the state of Indiana that he would leave his situation? The answer, almost certainly, is no. But it’s a question worth asking.

Dane Fife, assistant coach, Michigan State. Fife brings a lot of strong attributes. First and foremost, he played for Indiana from 1998 to 2002. He has six years of head coaching experience at IPFW, a position he left voluntarily in 2011 to join Tom Izzo’s staff in East Lansing. For the last 10 seasons, Fife has worked closely with and learned from one of the greatest coaches the sport has ever known. Fife would also be a strong link to the Knight days, since he was one of the last players to take the court in Assembly Hall for the General. Most of all, Fife really, really wants this job. He wouldn’t have to be courted, convinced, or asked twice. There’s something to be said for that kind of hard-edged passion and drive. Indiana is a great job, but it’s a hard one. Fife understands that, and he’d come in ready to dive in with everything he he’s got.

Dennis Gates, head coach, Cleveland State. Gates has only been a head coach for two years, but he is one of the hottest names in the profession after taking the Vikings to their second NCAA Tournament. He is bright, charismatic, effective and young (41). Gates grew up in Chicago, played at Cal and spent eight years as an assistant to Leonard Hamilton at Florida State before taking the Cleveland State job. Gates is not well-known to most fans, but Hamilton sure is, and Gates will carry that sheen of success with him wherever he lands.

Thad Matta, former head coach, Ohio State. Matta has been loving life since Ohio State gave him a huge bag of money and fired him in 2017. He has been open about his disgust with the world of college basketball recruiting as it was laid out in sordid detail by the FBI. But Matta is only 53, and he has also said he would come back if a really good job opened. Well, a really good job just opened, and it’s in the part of the country where Matta has spent almost all of his career. Matta has had some health issues the last few years, so that is a question he would have to answer. He turned down UCLA when that school came calling two years ago, so it’s no slam dunk he’d want to come to Bloomington. But he’ll get a phone call.

Porter Moser, head coach, Loyola Chicago. It must have been hard for Indiana fans wondering why the Hoosiers haven’t made the Final Four since 2002 to see Loyola Chicago get there three years ago. Now the Ramblers have won their league again and are back in the tournament with a squad that may be even stronger. Moser is going to lose his best player, senior forward Cameron Krutwig, and although he is plenty happy where he is, it’s hard to imagine he could turn down the lure of this job. If Dolson hires him, that’s a press conference he can win.

Eric Musselman, head coach, Arkansas. Musselman has deep roots in the NBA, having been a head coach with the Warriors and Kings, and he has shown he can kickstart college programs at Nevada and Arkansas. He has unlimited energy and charisma. The problem is that he’s only in his second season at Arkansas, so his buyout is going to be considerable. Also, Musselman would have to leave a secure job where he can win and take a job where winning and security have been hard to come by. If Dolson goes after Musselman hard and doesn’t get him, he could lose some face, so he has to be careful not to let Musselman use him to get a raise.

Nate Oats, head coach, Alabama. Everything I wrote about Musselman can be applied here, including the fact this is Oats’ second season at Tuscaloosa. Alabama just gave Oats a contract extension, so he’s probably too expensive and unwilling to make the change.

Brad Stevens, head coach, Boston Celtics. This has always been a bigger dream for Indiana fans than for Stevens. Yes, he’s Indiana born and bred, having grown up in Zionsville, played at DePauw and then coached for six years at Butler. Still, Stevens makes well over $3 million a year with the Boston Celtics, and despite the Celtics’ poor play this season, he has plenty of job security there. Even if the Celtics fired him, Stevens would have his choice of NBA vacancies. As an NBA coach, Stevens doesn’t have to deal with recruiting, academics or the NCAA’s Talmudic rulebook. He is the ultimate pipe dream for Indiana fans, but it appears he’s not about to light up.

    The smart money is on….
He may be a little long in the tooth, but John Beilein still has a lot of fire in the belly. He also has one of the best basketball brains ever to work a sideline. If he is ready to put his mind, body and soul into coaching again, there’s no reason why he couldn’t come to Indiana and reprise the success he had at all of his previous stops. If Dolson really wants him, this thing could be wrapped up in a couple of days.

I’m only ok with Fife because I think he’ll recruit the state and since they’ve whiffed on so many hot hires, maybe a young guy and a full rebuild is the answer. This team has zero bigs and can’t recruit shooters. Screw it, let’s bottom out and start over.

IU basically keeps hiring Jeff Fisher to go 9-7, 8-8 and 7-9.
