Finished the first episode and coach Mosley seems like a good dude. It's refreshing that they have had some coaches that are also good human beings.

I’m only through 3 episodes so I reserve the right to change my opinion but this group is great.

Joe is the worst but still not as bad as some of the dudes they’ve had on the previous seasons. He needs some mental health treatment but I’m sure a juco has nothing like that.

the show indicated that these guys practiced everyday from August through March. considering these kids are already dealing with some personal issues, the occasional blow up at practice/storm out really didnt seem like that big of a deal to me. i really didnt think Joe wound up being all that bad.

Joe: "I'm tired of this coach playing me at the last minute, sitting on the bench"

Joe is currently in the game with 10 minutes left in a game within 10 points, and has gotten minutes in the first half as well

Im not sure I liked this season as much. The best part is learning about the kids and their home lives imo. Only one they did that wi was Deshaun.

The coaches there are all genuinely good people which was a nice change of pace. Even though the head coach is uncomfortably preachy.

Joe wasnt even that bad compared to the bad football teammates we've seen in the past. He obviously needs therapy and has some emotional issues but he's not bad dude.

they're both great. basketball simply having less people and not wearing helmets makes it easier to follow and invest in the personalities.

the advantage to football is less games makes every week compelling. you can tell with basketball that they have to skip a portion of the season due to how many games they play. hopefully they jump back and forth between the two sports.

I did laugh at the editing of games. Every one it makes it look like they were in danger of losing, when actually they were running teams out of the gym

I understand not liking that the coach is preachy. I especially understand that at a public school. I think that he genuinely wants/wanted the best for those kids and a big part of his personal success in his mind was his religious beliefs. I think he could have been a zealous follower of any religion and it would not have made a difference in the quality of the season. I think him actually caring about the players and not being a constant tyrant made this season much more of a feel good story. I felt like his faith was genuine and it wasn't like seeing Buddy drop 5 GDs and go immediately into our father. The criticism is valid, but I do not think it made a difference in the show.

That said, give me buddy or the offensive "genius" any day simply because they were so idiotic that it was hard to believe they weren't hired actors playing a coach.

So, it varies depending where you are.

Like you saw, the California JUCOs don’t have housing or can even give any scholarship money. Now, a lot of those guys are likely able to qualify for Pell, which takes care of it.

Those California JUCOs don’t really compete in the national competitions because there are damn near 70 Cali JUCOs. So winning a state title is pretty legit.

In terms of the rest of the country, Florida and Texas traditionally have the best JUCO basketball. That goes for talent, facilities, etc. Mississippi and Kansas are pretty decent, too.

After that, they’re generally all a crapshoot.

Went into this with fairly low expectations since I’m not as big into basketball. I’m three episodes in and have been pleasantly surprised. Really like Mosley and he genuinely seems to care about the team. Big fan of Deshaun as well and the stuff with his mom was rough. Joe Hampton is a mess.

Just finished. Thought the season was excellent. Football is far more interesting to me but I really enjoyed something different. And I agree that fewer athletes and seeing more of their faces in the moment was beneficial.

There really weren’t any players that I disliked; certainly no Malik Henrys. Joe was a shithead for the first few episodes but I was definitely rooting for him at the end. I also liked all of the coaches—especially the two main assistants. Mosley did get a little preachy in a few episodes (the Kobe one) but it didn’t take away from the show. He seems like a really good dude.

Felt awful for them when they were all pulled off the bus.

Was over at my mom’s house tonight and she reminded me that my Grandpa was the team doctor for ELAC sports way back in the day. Probably in the 50’s or 60’s. He even had a letterman’s jacket from them. I remember seeing it while helping clean after both he and my grandma passed away a few years ago.

like, on a human level it's cool that the coach is great and the kids did well there and used their opportunity to go elsewhere for the most part but for the purposes of TV it's a bit boring and I hope they head back to football next year. either that or find a school with a crazy basketball coach. I feel like the last two seasons were probably more of a response to Buddy and Jason in a "see? not every coach is a walking ego" way but I don't think it's a coincidence that people loved the first three seasons more than the last two.

Don’t care is Mosely is preachy. He seems like a good man that cares more about these kids than they care about themselves.

What’s the deal with Coach Robinson? He was a HS head coach at Notre Dame HS, lost his job, and then ended up volunteering at a JUCO? That seems off to me

I prefer the past two seasons by a lot as far as the coaches go. Fuck giving any kind of fame to pieces of shit like Brown. Season one is the best because the players from the first season are still the best group, just because they were hilarious, has nothing to do with whether the coaches are awful or not.

Never understand why people will try to hate on someone for being “preachy”. If that is what you have to knock on a guy then he is doing a lot right. That is fine if you are an atheist or whatever but don’t bash a guy because he believes in something and is trying to better kids with it, it helped him.

I don’t have any issue with him or any other coach using his faith like that. I’m just saying that as a viewer I’d rather spend time with the players than watching him pray for five minutes. The home/school lives of the “characters” are far more appealing to me personally.

All of that being said, I didn’t find the religious stuff to be over the top at all. There were merely minutes of it in an 8-hour series. And the dude is obviously doing great things for the kids so he can handle it however he wants.
