I’m laughing at the citizens of Texas because this will become political for a lot of them and we know how that goes.

Same for my home state of Nebraska, where public transportation (taking light-rail for instance) is absolutely terrifying and full of boogeymen.

I’m all for a transcontinental high-speed lines. Absolutely one of the things I hope to see in my lifetime.

Back in the early 00s when gas was bouncing off $5/gallon I looked at taking Amtrak from Orlando to Atlanta to go home on vacation. It would have taken two days, cost more than a flight, and routed me thru North Carolina

Oh no this will help other people but won’t help me (will actually help you with ancillary benefits), can’t support this.

bringing up the transcontinental railroad is funny bc it was built in a time where right-of-way costs were, uh, quite different

which, for that matter, is related to why China has been able to build so much HSR. It's much easier when all the land in the country is owned by the central government.

I like when we do inception, like city and state named after different groups, neither of which were historically of that area prior to European settlement.

One of the biggest downfalls of how civics is taught in this country is that we activate young kids’ interest in politics by using this line of thinking:

“research each candidates policies and find out which ones are most important to you” is what they tell first time voters. Never do they add “your community” or “your country” to it.

My brother and his (now) wife on a pilgrimage in college did the Camino de Santiago. I had never heard of it before then. Sounded real cool, definitely geared towards the very religious.

I know some folks that have done it. I'm sure it's spectacular, but it's also quite a religious event, and more of a stroll along country roads. Would rather do something gnarlier.

My brother is friends with a bunch of South Africans and a couple years ago they were planning to backback a ton of Africa. A few months before they went, another group was kidnapped and held ransom. Their trip was cancelled.

Occasionally we have earthquakes, but I’d be more worried about the sink holes it would cause or the fact that the water table in places is like a few feet down
