Was listening to a Margot Price interview. Sounds like she’s had quite a battle with alcohol during covid but has straightened it out for now.
That actually didn’t come up. She did say the reason she dropped out of college and moved to Nashville was because of a vision she had during a mushroom trip.
My girlfriend (who knows nothing of John Prine) is bawling. Bruno and Andy killed the Little Richard tribute as well
Mickey Guyton was also wonderful last night. https://www.grammy.com/grammys/videos/mickey-guyton-black-me - 2021-grammy-awards-show-performance
That's only about 2.5 hours from me, may have to make the drive for it. I miss live music so damn much.
This is a very enjoyable playlist I found on Reddit. It has lots of favorites, but also some deep tracks:
Just booked a room , dinner, and tickets to Mike and the moonpies at Coupland dance hall, giving it to my wife as a birthday gift I'm fucking excited to get to see live music again
This morning on 3/29/20 I had my last and final breakfast with the late and great John Prine. I was lucky enough to have breakfast with this fine genteleman somewhere between 2-3/dozen times when I moved to Nashville, and never really let it set it in. Facbook memories, however, remind me of my last. RIP John, and thanks for the conversations. Edit: I believe the FB memory was from the day before, 3/28/20, for reference.
i just listened to these. if i close my eyes i could swear way down in my whiskey is a vern gosdin tune. alan’s still got it.
Just heard earlier on the radio, when someone asked Ray Benson what song was merles favorite to play live, he responded without a doubt it was Natural High
Season 2 of Cocaine and Rhinestones starts April 20th. If you haven't listened to season 1 yet, do it. https://cocaineandrhinestones.com/episodes/season-one
He annoys the crap out of me, but I'll put up with it for another season if it's as good as season 1.
Do people celebrate this guy? Don't care much for his old fogey attitude in songs like Okie from Muskogee
"He gained popularity with his songs about the working class that occasionally contained conformist and jingoistic themes contrary to the prevailing anti-Vietnam War sentiment of much popular music of the time." You know I'm only semi-informed on this genre, fill me in on what I'm missing
for me i believe it's haggard playing a character and writing from that perspective as he did in many songs he wrote and/or chose to sing. he's contradicted himself a few times explaining his reasoning for writing it, saying it was sarcasm, saying he was writing for people who didn't like the lack of support for soldiers in vietnam, saying he was writing it for his father who left Oklahoma looking for work and moved the family to bakersfield. Haggard told the author RJ Smith in 2000: “I don’t feel now the way I did when I wrote ‘Okie from Muskogee.’ I still sing it because it describes a period of time. I write from common knowledge, current knowledge, collective intelligence. At the time I wrote that song, I was just about as intelligent as the American public was. And they was about as dumb as a rock. About Vietnam, about marijuana, and other things. When you get older, you find that things you were absolutely, positively sure about, you didn’t know nothin’ about.”
Seems a lot cooler than Johnny Cash. I read his autobiography recently (the one he did most recently before he died) and he was going the other way. Having Jerry Falwell over as a houseguest, denouncing all kinds of things as sin etc. Such a cool rebel with his middle finger up
