I put in 36.2 miles this week, first time over 35 miles in a week since JANUARY 2019. Wow. Feeling a bit stronger and some speed is coming back.

I'm going to try a marathon training plan precisely by the book, which I've never done before. This was week 1. In the past I always tweaked the hell out of the plan. Goal race will actually be a half marathon. Goal is to get half marathon time down before I attempt another 26.2.

36.2? Wow pretty nutty first week. My marathon plan is a month or more in and I did 13.1 this morning and the whole week only added up to 25.

The run was hell, I waited to start too long in the day so it was in the high 60s I believe, first relatively "warm" run since the fall.

Been working my ass of to get back into running shape. Have done a couple races in the past and want to have a goal to do 4-5 more races this year. Ran my first trail half yesterday, my shit is sore af. The wife and I really enjoy running together, this race was no different. Pretty proud of us today.

Last two miles in the flats were fucking BRUTAL. Wind was gone, temps were in the 80s, sun exposure. She dragged my ass through the gate.

High 60's is beautiful! lol, just depends on what you're used to. For example tomorrow morning will be about 62 F and mid-day will be a nice 72 F, so I'm just going to do my run at lunch.

For sure, I just usually am out the door by 7am and it's in the 50's. I better get used to it because Spring lasts for maybe two weeks in the Valley of the Sun. It'll be 84 at 4am soon enough.

Well, this really was week 6. The first 5 weeks didn't include any speed work or tempo runs and I kinda just did that on my own without a plan because it's so boring. So once the speedwork/tempo workouts start, I put the plan together and it works out to 12 weeks as follows:

Also, considering my aches and pain, I’ve been considering getting a percussion gun/hypervolt thing for a while. Found this on Amazon today, had an extra $20 off (daily deal?) and scored for $85. Might be a cheap option if any if you were looking to purchase one. Reviews seem solid and significantly cheaper than hypervolt

What are you planning on running? I love trail but some of the aravaipa runs are fucking brutal. I could use some easier events

Oh I’m doing all solo runs until vaccinated. Nothing planned so far, but the distance will be full marathon, currently projected for mid May. I have never done trail running, would be interesting after achieving this milestone.

Good stuff. I use one of those once in a while.

That ascent and descent on your trail race... my lord. I can't imagine. Living in south FL... this week I ran 36 miles and the "elevation" on strava says 200 feet, lol. I would seriously have to train hard before attempting any trail running like that.

Aravaipa runs a pretty tight ship and outside a couple Trump stickers, the event was very well done. Everyone was wearing masks around the starting/finishing line/booths. I felt real good about it. Started in 15 person waves every 10 minutes. We both felt it was very well organized and safe. Fwiw.

Will do. I work for an outdoor co-op (take a guess) on the side, have probably seen as many hypervolt a returned as I’ve sold over the years. Buddy of mine swears by his. Should be here tomorrow, I’ll update in a week or so.

EDIT: Just realized half my runs have been track speed work. I am an idiot. So running in the city is the same terrible elevation :respek:

Been super pleased with my HR as of late. Goal going into my marathon last year was a 9:07 per mile pace. Ended up doing 9:04 with a 8:46 for mile 26 and 7:37 for the final .2. HR was trash that day from the start, and that was one I did at my local trail. Was just so amped at wanting to run sub-4:00. Need to do a better job with that at this year’s actual race (aiming for Minneapolis in October), but if I can keep my HR low like this, I might be pushing for an 8:30 per mile. Definitely think I can do 8:45.

Was in quarantine for ten days to start February. Did a bunch of cardio workouts to keep things good, but the lack of punishment on my joints definitely has had me hurting a bit more since coming back. Hoping I feel good to go by April.

I'm curious how do you know what your race goal is, 6+ months out? Like how are you coming up with 8:30-8:45/mile pace? Is that based on your current workouts or a recent 5k race?

    I ask because:
    1) I'm interested in how people determine their race goals. I'm struggling with that right now with an upcoming 15k race. and
    2) Your first marathon was somewhat similar to mine (I was slower though, I ran a 9:28 pace) but then a year later I was able to run my 2nd marathon at an 8:08 pace. That was only because I trained hard and had almost a year of running in between the two.

Part of it is just the expectation of improvement but not shooting for the moon. I guess I would say it's more of my floor goal and by the time we get there, we'll see where I was. That said, at this time a year ago, I don't know if I could have expected to run it sub-4:00, so by October I might be in a completely different place.

It's mainly based off how I'm running now, how easy improving my face feels, and where my HR is at.

Bit of a word salad answer. But I like to start preparing myself mentally for where I could be on race day early, and adjust throughout the year/training process.

    Drive by question -
I’m wanting to get serious about running. For me this means starting from scratch, with my goal of maybe being able to go a full 5k in 4-5 months. 330 lb. My actual question is if anyone has experience with the Altra Paradigm, and how it compares to something like a Hoka Clifton. I have some Hoka Speedgoat 4 that I really like aside from the narrow toe. Big fan of Altra toe box, but want that maximum cushion of Hoka. Can anyone tell me if the Paradigm is even in the same cushioning ballapark as what hoka offers? Most likely going to get a Clifton EE width and a Paradigm D to try.

/ or is there something else I haven’t thought of that is similar to what I described?

Generic answer I give to anyone who is about to start running and that’s if you have access to one, go to a running shoe store and get fitted. They will tell you what kind of foot/arch you have and what kind of runner you are. They will be able to match you with your best shoe.

Gate River Run 15k in Jacksonville, FL really was a great race. I've run 40+ races and this was definitely one of the best. Well organized, good music throughout the race, decent amount of spectators in the neighborhoods, fun challenging bridge near end of race in the 9th mile. Very windy, but cool and cloudy. The wind was brutal going up that bridge. It felt like it would never end. Keep in mind this is coming from a guy who primarily runs on flat roads here in south FL. Also the first mile was really tough to set a pace so I just relaxed and went with the crowd and zigzagged a bit, but first mile was the slowest. Despite that, I did set my 15k PR! (but I've only run 2 15k's, lol) - had enough in the tank to finish strong:

Yesterday completed a 40+ mile week, first time since January 2019. 15 mile long run yesterday @ 8:57/mile pace, with mile 14 @ 8:05 and mile 15 @ 7:41. First time running 15+ since December 2018.

Wow I really did waste the last two years as far as running fitness. That's alright I'm back in it. I am fucking pumped. Feel like I need to temper expectations but damn that good of a long run this early in my training plan feels good. Could be that Pfizer juice running through my veins as well, 1st shot yesterday after the long run.

I’ve got like 680 miles in since last April. I struggle to go past 3.1 miles. Between the last two Wednesday took some time off for what turned out to be a failed root canal. I got back going Thursday and on Thursday did the normal, then Friday did 4.2 and yesterday did 5. Pretty happy to keep Thursday and Friday sub 9 pace but was super sad to not keep it yesterday. :8mm:

Ran ten miles on Friday for a virtual race. Was scheduled to run the actual race Saturday, but with Pfeizer #2 on Friday afternoon, I figured it would be smart to knock out the run beforehand. It was, as I felt like garbage for a good five or six hours on Saturday.

Anyway! Ran ten and set a new PR - 1:11:14. Felt great during and after it. Running a half in about four weeks and going to try to run sub-1:35, which would be a PR as well. Signing up for the Minneapolis Marathon this week too. Good times!

    Hamstring pulls fucking suck.
Until last Monday, i haven’t missed a day since April 2020, running at least every other day. 1052 miles. I’ve battled through various aches and pains in my ankle and calf, but nothing kept my on the bench until i pulled my hamstring on my run last Monday. Not sure if they’re related, but i drank heavy at the beach Friday and Saturday and did a couple hour long runs while down there. It was in the upper 70s. My hammy was noticeably tight driving home on Sunday. Get back to Birmingham and its 39° on Monday morning. About 2mi in, my hammy was getting progressively tighter to the point i stopped to stretch it. After stretching for a minute or two, i started back. Definitely should’ve stopped but .25mi later, i felt a pop in the back of my right leg and that was all she wrote. Had to call my wife to come pick me up. 8 days later, i can walk pretty normal, but it still catches every now and then. Started some light stretching today and hope to be running by Monday. That would be two full weeks.
