He was pretty shaky early in the year defensively, but he’s started to improve (actually that can be said for the entire team). He was brought in to be a 2nd or 3rd pairing puck mover and is average defensively on his best days and that’s fine. They’re letting him handle the puck and letting someone like Ceci play the physical game, which a few months ago would’ve sounded terrifying, but it’s actually working. The Pens playing a stupid fast game right now. They’re are all over the place defensively/forechecking and it’s leading to great chances on the counterattack. I just hope that Malkin doesn’t come back in one of his funks and kill the overall defensive effort.
My favorite was the weekly fanned dump in attempt at the red line that immediately goes the other way for a premium chance.

It’s like he decided calling arguably the best defensive C in the league who is also basically a PPG player- “not a 1C” wasn’t stupid enough, so then he went and called the 5th leading scorer in NHL history a 2C as well. These people run professional hockey teams.
