Probably, but depending on what Atlanta does I think it may ultimately have gotten easier. If Atlanta goes QB at 4, the chances Sewell or Pitts is there at 7 are much higher. And I think Sewell and Pitts might both bring back more in a trade from a team in love with what they believe might be an elite talent than Mac Jones would.
This also increases the odds, even if it’s slightly, that Fields or Lance could fall to us at 7. I doubt we would draft either at this point but it’s not crazy to consider.
If a team without a franchise QB has what they believe to be a franchise QB “fall in their lap” and pass on him, everyone in the front office should be put to sleep.
I'm in on that, although I would prefer a 2 this year to another 1 next year. I probably shouldn't, but I'm currently invested in this draft and would like to see us be able to take a few more starter-level players.
New USA Today has the Lions taking Slater over Sewell at 7. There was no explanation for why they would do that, but I guess Slater might be more NFL ready this year. Seems like a no-brainer to either pick Sewell or use his availability to trade back.
Anyone following the tmb mock draft thread feel free to throw suggestions for us. Coming up on the 2nd rd now
Good spot for an OT, DT, LB or WR, imo. No idea who is available. Can probably wait until the 3rd for a WR.
In the first round, guys I want at 7 are Sewell or Fields, although I could talk myself into Lance, Slater and, potentially, Parsons. I don't want a WR or Pitts at 7. My new theory is that more and more quality NFL receivers are coming out of college and that makes drafting a pass catcher in the first round unnecessary. I also don't want Devonta Smith or Waddle at all and Pitts and Chase will hopefully be gone. In the second round I think there will be very good players at OT, LB or Edge, and then I would start looking at WR in the 3rd.
Dyami Brown looks still available, but that will probably change in 15 picks. Amari Rodgers will be in that range. Josh Palmer as well. Atwell would be fine, just that he's so small. Dylan Moses would add to the LB reclamation project. Any DT or Edges that drop would be good picks. Do not pick a TE or a QB in this draft.
He weighed in at 149 pounds yesterday, going to spend a lot of time a top the Kiper's Best Available list during draft weekend.
Devonta Smith weighed in at 166 pounds. Probably takes him out of the discussion for the seventh pick.
I don't know how anyone could look at our current group of WRs and be upset if they took a talented one anywhere they picked. Our current WR group is in the running for the worst position group in the entire league right now, and arbitrarily deciding to wait until after the most talented ones are gone doesn't seem like a strategy that's going to change that any time soon.
QB or trade down. I'm leaning trade down because one of the biggest upsides to taking a rookie QB is having a cheap player at the most important position. That's mitigated by having Goff's shit ass on the roster though.
In general I'd rather spend a top 10 pick on an OT or QB and get a 3rd Round WR than vice versa, and this year the top guys aren't guys who change my mind. Meanwhile, there are a surplus of WRs who will upgrade the Lions shitty wide receiving corp if they're drafted at 72, 101 and/or 112. Maybe Chase changes my mind a little if he’s available at 7, but Smith and Waddle don't.
Maybe it's all pre-draft smoke but I'm starting to get sold by a lot of insider types talking about how Waddle is special and has the biggest upside at wr. Radio guy pointed out that when when Bama had 4 1st round receivers on the field in 2019, Waddle still stood out.
waddle would be an okay pick in the teens, but not at 7. look at where the top OL in the NFL and compare to where the top WR is drafted. You can find WRs outside of the first round, but odds are less likely of finding a franchise tackle outside of first. I’m still team QB. Fields or Lance. 2nd choice is trade down and acquire more assets.
I kind of disagree with this. The talent drops off after the top 10 or so, but I think the group that follows is pretty deep where I don't think there's a huge gap between picks 20 and 80. If you can add multiple picks in that range, I think there are some position groups with depth that match well with our needs.
