Sorry for the dumb question, but why is it an either/or with Agu and Wesolak?

Can't we take Agu as an athlete and see where he ends up and/or just take them both and process someone else? Or will it spook Ford to take too many DEs?

both look like pure rush ends to me and we already double dipped in that group last cycle. Dont think Ford would be to worried, but roster balance is a thing. Getting Aupiu, Schweitzer, Onye Ford, Gobaira and 1 of Agu/Wesolak is plenty of bodies in 2 cycles for 2 spots. We need all the spots we can find for cornerbacks honestly

edit: Only Gobaira and Ford seem like strongside guys to me, which we actually need plenty of as we will prolly run more true 3 man fronts now afaik

    Loy on Agu:

They could be completely wrong and time will prove it one way or another but Notre Dame truly thinks Agu is going to be a first rounder in the next 3 or 4 years. Not kidding. They are really high on him after packaging together and watching his growth projection through high school and recent camp film.

Ehhhh. Assuming this isn’t talking about the DT that wants to visit, it appears to be the coaching staff continuing to do some serious homework and identifying kids they want to mold and being at the vanguard. They’ve for sure been doing an incredible job at it (and Freeman has obviously has had a sizable recruiting impact).

To be clear, I’m not trying to downplay any of this; there’s a great track record going on.

I feel like we’re beginning to build a bit of a wagon. I’m not sure it’s ever going to be as good as Bama’s wagon, but it’s a serious step up from what we’re used to. Just figure out the damn QB position.

    on Holden Staes

Notre Dame has already landed one tight end this cycle in three-star recruit Jack Nickel, but the Fighting Irish are far from done at the position. Not only is the staff recruiting West Des Moines (Iowa) Valley high school three-star tight end Eli Raridon, who will take his official visit to Notre Dame over the weekend of June 18-20, but the staff has been relentless in their pursuit of Atlanta (Ga.) Westminster School four-star tight end Holden Staes as well. The Fighting Irish have long been considered the favorite since he de-committed from Penn State and the 247Sports Crystal Ball reflects exactly that. In fact, myself, Irish Illustrated’s Kevin Sinclair, 247Sports National Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong and Penn State insider Sean Fitz all have the 6-5, 230-pounder landing with the Fighting Irish.

So, when will he make a second and final decision?

    1COMMENTS
In talking to Staes, he will be at Notre Dame for his official visit over the weekend of June 11-13. As of today, we’re told that is the only trip 100% locked in at the time. Does that mean good news is coming for the Fighting Irish? We’ll see, but I do expect him in Notre Dame’s class and a commitment may not be all that far from happening. The Fighting Irish coaching staff has done really well here through their multiple calls with the Georgia standout and in checking with a few closely-connected sources, Notre Dame is the team to beat behind closed doors. All that said, others still in play for potential visits include Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Georgia and LSU.

Per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Staes is the No. 202 overall player in America, No. 7 tight end nationally and No. 22 prospect in Georgia from the class of 2022.

reading between the lines, I think Staes is already a silent commit and will announce relatively soon. Loy has alluded that he already did an unofficial visit to campus recently (kept under the radar) and Loy has also mentioned that he's a little surprised that Staes hasn't announced publicly yet.

Prister's film review of Agu - Cliff's Notes, he's good now and he can become REALLY good in a few years

Born in Ireland and living in England, Darren Agu hasn’t been playing the American game of football for long, and when he was prior to the arriving in the States to play at the Rabun Gap (Ga.) Nacoochee School, he participated in a 6-on-6 version of the sport.

Suffice it to say that as it pertains to his time in the game, Agu is a somewhat raw football player.

Also suffice it to say that Agu is closing the gap as rapidly as his backside pursuit of a fleeing quarterback.

The 6-foot-6, 235-pound three-star tight end prospect – as he’s currently listed by 247Sports – is all defensive end as it pertains to the collegiate level. With three Crystal Balls cast in Notre Dame’s favor by 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong and Tom Loy, as well as Irish Illustrated’s Kevin Sinclair, it’s a good bet that this highly-skilled athlete ends up in the Irish fold sooner rather than later.

Ranked as a three-star and the No. 581 composite prospect in the country, it would be wise to view Agu in the same light as Chantilly, Va. three-star defensive end Aiden Gobaira.

Their three-star status is, shall we say, a temporary condition.

Whether it’s from a two-, three- or four-point stance, Agu is a terror. According to Sinclair, who has seen whole-game footage of Agu, his desire to play at a breakneck pace on every snap is his general makeup.

Agu gallops around a football field. He’ll come off the edge, where he’s at his best, but he’ll also rush up the middle, roam from an inside or outside linebacker spot and pursue the football with a thirst for catching his prey. Part of Agu’s great appeal is the versatility with which he can be used.

For an athlete of this size to close ground on quarterbacks at the pace that he does is quite a sight. His footspeed is that of a smaller, shorter sprinter. And yet Agu plays with a controlled aggression. He doesn’t take the bait on every move of an offensive player. His change of direction is very good considering how hard he pursues the football. Check out Agu in individual workouts and you’ll get a greater appreciation for the unique combination of length and athleticism he offers.

For such an inexperienced football player, Agu knows how to use his hands to his advantage. That not only allows him to be quick and lethal off the edge, but also makes him a quality run defender. He wraps well, which is a learned trait because it’s easier just to slam into a ball carrier when you’re new(er) to the game.

At his length, he plays a little high at times and can get away with it. An emphasis on knee bending is in order, although he clearly runs drills to continue his improvement in cutting the edge. He also will be focusing on strength training as we sometimes see him wrapping and then pulling runners to the ground as opposed to tackling through them.

In a full-scale college football strength and conditioning program, Agu will add considerable lower-body strength. He’s a pure Vyper end right now, but has the frame to quickly and effectively shoot up to the be a 255-pound range and perhaps more if they want to make him a Big end. His skillset, however, says Vyper.

His days off the radar are coming to a close, particularly when you see his offer list. Notre Dame, Alabama and Penn State are listed the warmest among his suitors. He also has offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt of the SEC, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Virginia Tech of the ACC, Arizona State and Colorado of the Pac-12, Iowa State, Kansas State and West Virginia of the Big 12, and Michigan State and Rutgers out of the Big Ten.

This is a legitimate four-star prospect. There’s the natural growth necessary for one who has been playing 11-on-11 football for such a short period of time. But there’s no reason why this piece of clay can’t be molded into a top-notch Power 5 conference defensive end with an excellent chance that it will come in a Notre Dame uniform.
