No, of course not. But that doesn't automatically mean we're in for the worst-case scenario each and every time experts are "worried" in perpetuity.

The problem is no one listens to the experts. Hundreds of thousands of people died that wouldn’t have if people would have listened and acted upon what the experts thought.

I don’t know, why don’t we listen to a TMB user for once instead of respecting decades and decades worth of experience in epidemiology and chemistry and biology and pharmaceuticals and a vast multitude of other scientific branches and researchers and stuff like that?

I work in public communications, and my critique throughout has been how Big Science has communicated throughout this entire ordeal. If you've been sounding a five-alarm fire for 15 months straight, eventually it just becomes noise.

Furthermore, my point was about how to ingest these latest warnings on a personal level, especially given where we are at this stage of the pandemic. Anyone worried about a fourth wave can now go get vaccinated if they aren't already. The third 'wave' came in the winter, when conditions pushed people indoors and the vaccine wasn't widely available. The conditions are entirely different now, and to say otherwise is dishonest.

Last time I looked at the data, cases were rising especially in the Northeast and Michigan. I live in Texas. In our last round of hysterics, Abbott's ending of the mask mandate was supposed to lead to an immediate spike. That hasn't happened.

You do realize all of these companies employ Public Communications individuals. Are you saying you know better than all of them?

And i don't think you know shit about public communications. You are wrong on all of the above and we are totally on equal footing to be having said debate on the topic.

I think the pandemic was always going to be bad considering we had Trump in office and the CDC was (inexplicably and unforgivably) caught flat-footed once it became apparent covid was going to be a problem.

The US has had 168.9 deaths per 100k throughout the pandemic. The EU is at 140 and the UK is at 191. By no means good, but not far and away the worst in the world as the chicken littles would have you believe.

Lol so I'm wrong that it's spring time and covid is far less likely to spread outdoors than indoors? I'm wrong that vaccinations are widely available now and they weren't in the winter? I'm wrong that cases are down in Texas now vs. a month ago?

I need to find these experts that are saying that the possible 4th wave is gonna be exactly like the 3rd wave. Fuzzy Zoeller can you please show us where you are getting that or please stop tilting at windmills?

Just for fucking starters, even if you're vaccinated, more cases in a fourth wave here in the US (or from new outbreaks around the globe) gives the virus increased opportunity to mutate with each new infection. What happens if/when the next variant simply ignores your vaccine? On a personal level, how does that math play out?

I'm upset, clearly. Saying the experts are wrong instead of self reflecting and thinking that its you who likely doesn't understand or appreciate some of the nuances is just peak arrogant bullshit that got us to today. If you don't like Trump, don't do what he does. Be self aware that you have limitations and that even experts (who are not infallible) know way more than you do on this topic. And don't assume the media speaks for experts. They often bungle it all up because they *gasp* aren't experts either.

Not for me. I've moved to an underground bunker, and on the rare occasions I'm forced to go above ground I quadruple mask and plan to do so for at least the next six years. Therefore, anyone who takes the pandemic 1/100th less seriously than me is a bad person.

Like Lyrtch said he came in here with some hypothesis a while ago and apparently took it personally when no one else agreed with him. Ever since then he has posted every single piece of evidence he finds that supports his stance and refuses to accept anything that disputes it. It’s amazing.

You realize that it takes time for a virus to spread exponentially, right? Mask mandate was lifted about a month ago...you have to wait till people can infect others and then those people infect others and those people infect others.

Weather and having over 1/3 of the population vaccinated might help dampen it, along with the many businesses that continue to require masks. We saw this play out last year and still had case spikes in the summer, though. Maybe we should’ve shown some restraint and waited another month till we can have more of the Texas population vaccinated

I realize it's impossible to hold more than one concurrent opinion these days, but allow me to try: Greg Abbott is a moron and a coward and lifting the mask mandate was a dumb move, but the hysterical reaction to lifting the mandate was totally overblown.

Texas had 7,300 cases on March 2 and 4,300 yesterday. At what date will every new case be attributed to the mask mandate removal? Because we were five weeks removed from that tweet as of yesterday.

Too many factors to tell you exactly when cases will start to spike again as a result of lifting the mandate and opening businesses up fully. If you don’t believe this will result in some sort of spike, you might want to go join the galaxy brains on Facebook that cite case numbers in LA as a reason lockdowns don’t work.

How many cases do you feel is a reasonable number to justify a negative reaction to what you say is a “dumb move” by Greg Abbott? Should we (and the media) not speak up if we believe it is a dumb move?

    Here's one:

"Let me say that, at this time, we really are in a Category 5 hurricane status with regard to the rest of the world," Michael Osterholm, University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy director, said Sunday on NBC's “Meet the Press.”

"At this point, we will see in the next two weeks the highest number of cases reported globally since the beginning of the pandemic. In terms of the United States, we're just at the beginning of this surge, we haven't even really begun to see it yet," Osterholm said.

    https://thehill.com/changing-americ...07-fourth-wave-of-covid-19-in-midwest-has-hit

And here's something I definitively was wrong about: earlier I said there are 4x as many vaccinations as new infections per day in the US right now. I was wrong, it's 40x.

"As soon as cases rise, that's when I'll be proven right!" You're literally stating you have a conclusion formed and are just waiting for the evidence to arrive.

And as I said before, it's possible to speak up and say it's a dumb move without falling into hysterics. I managed to do it.

And it's also possible to reflect and say, "Hmm, cases have continued falling since the mask mandate was lifted. Maybe it's possible that a government mandate is one of many factors that contribute to statewide spread."

It’s quite simple, if you’re worried, you can get a vaccine. Since you can’t get a vaccine, you must not be worried. As the Latinx would say:

I mean, I don't see any way it would decrease spread. Like I said all along, I wouldn't have done it had he asked my advice. But cases have continued dropping since he removed the mandate, but you won't see anyone in hysterics going back and revisiting those takes.

Is it more likely with a solid number of people unwilling to get vaccinated that a strain non responsive to the vaccine takes over at an accelerated pace? I.e. it’s almost like an ideal scenario because it’s the only strain that can hit 50% of the population (or however many is vaxed at the time?)
