One of my coworkers has a pit and a German Shepherd. The pit jumped their fence twice to go after a neighbor, luckily the neighbor ran back into the house both times. He’s not sure why he did it, bc he’d never done something like that before. So the coworker only took him out alone and on a leash until he had higher fences installed.

Sounds like we need a poll to vote about pitbulls regarding what methods can be used to stop them from ravaging our kids and horses

pits are too unpredictable, even if their owners aren't shitty. I don't see a need to own one when I can have the dog master breed, German Shepherd Dog.

My wife’s extended family (two cousins) both recently got pits. They both openly admit that their dogs are nice but lose it sometimes and they don’t know why. They seem like sweet dogs but when it’s on a leash growling and barking but wagging it’s tail I’m not taking that as friendly despite what they say. One just had a baby and it scares like 90% of her family what might happen one day.

I think Pits CAN be wonderful dogs, I know several and have enjoyed them greatly. With that said I do think they are predisposed to have aggressive tendencies and coupled with poor upbringing can exacerbate that issue.
Additionally, some dogs, like people, are just fucked up regardless of breed. However, because they are Pits when the pop off it gets media traction opposed to some other breed when they freak out and bite someone it isn't as publicized.

In my own anecdotal experiences Pits have been extremely sweet and loving dogs, but I can see the hesitation by some that have had poor experiences.

Been attacked by dogs twice in my life. One was a pit and one was an Australian Shepherd/collie sort of mutt. Only the pit was when I was an adult. Not a fan.

Pit Bill's are like AR-15's. Yes, they get more headlines when some dog randomly attacks a person (as opposed to say, a Collie attacking someone) but at the same time, what is the fucking point? The majority (NOT ALL) of Pit owners I know basically use the dog as an extension of their ego. "Look at how bad ass I am I have a Pit". Pretty much just like the AR-15 owners I know.
And, just like an AR-15, there are WAY better options out there. Want something for home defense? Get a shotgun instead of an AR. (And get a German Shepherd instead of a Pit).
Want a family doggo? It's hard to beat a Lab or a Golden Retriever.
Look, I understand that all dogs and owners are not perfect. I'm saying this as someone who owns a big, mean ass German Shepherd who has the personality of a Terminator that has a glitch and is experiencing PMS for the first time. But he is 100% predictable. He is CONSISTENT in how he views strangers. That literally never changes. There are no surprises. I know EXACTLY how he is going to react when a stranger rolls up, and that is that. The Pitts I know are too unpredictable to be a reliable source of protection (for self or family).
My brother has a Pit. Great dog. Loves everybody (except the UPS guy). I tried to convince him to get another breed of dog as he lives out in the sticks and was looking for a dog that would protect his family and his farm animals. The dog sucks at both and randomly attacked his father in law that had been picking up my neice and taking her to school every morning for two years. Just out of the blue. Thankfully my neices screaming more or less distracted the dog and allowed him to climb into a rabbit pen of all things where he stayed for hours until my brother got there.
Idk, I guess it's all up to what people want out of a dog. I just can't imagine wanting what a Pit has to offer. Just my two cents.

That horse showed a lot of restraint. Of course horses are not violent animals, but will defend themselves. They can spook easy too, so everyone on that carriage was lucky.

I agree with your statement here, but I have to point out that the best home defense weapon is an AR/SR type platform.

Wasn’t a pit fan and only had labs growing up (multiple generations) until I married into owning a staffordshire terrier. They’re bred to be nanny’s and she’s one of the lovingest dogs I’ve ever owned.

I had never heard of keeping butter on the counter before my wife
Growing up we always had both stick butter and soft spread tub in the fridge

I can't even remember the last time we had a tub of butter in the fridge since my wife keeps a stick in the little container on the counter

Staff Bulls and Am Staffs are commonly called pits but are not pits. Both are AKC recognized breeds. The American Pit Bull Terrier is not AKC recognized but is by the UKC. Staffys are awesome dogs.

I have a golden retriever who literally can't help but go fetch things out of the water and bring them back to me. She will swim after a living duck for as long as the duck wants her to before it flies off and breaks her heart. I don't even duck hunt but it's so engrained in her DNA that she can't help it. For centuries, "pitbulls" were bred to bite onto bulls and not let go until their masters literally pried them off. Like my golden retriever's tendencies to go after ducks or anything else in the water, most pitbulls don't know any better and just do what comes natural. That said, if you have one from a good healthy line that hasn't been bred to be aggressive for a few generations then their environment can pretty much always overcome their genetics. But that also requires a loving, caring owner who doesn't use the dog as an extension of their ego as others have mentioned. And unfortunately for everyone there are still waaaaaaay too many of those douchebags out there these days. Not to mention some real shitheads that are still breeding them to fight and enabling the aggression. Those are the specific lines that should probably be ended for everyone's good. :twocents:

Pits get a bad rap but sally was attacked once at the dog park by one, had to get between them and punch the dog to get it to stop. The owner was yelling at me, my son was yelling at the owner.... total shit show

100% unprovoked, all sally wanted to do was play ball

needless to say if there is a pit at the park or one comes in we leave

Did a report on komodo dragons when I was in elementary school. Think I scared some of my classmates by teaching them that such a creature exists. And I'm glad because it still scares me to know those SOBs are waddling around certain places in SE Asia and I live way the hell over here in Alabama.
